Re: Mullainathan: Why Investing Is So Complicated

For mutual funds, better standards and better labels could simplify choice. For example, suppose the label “Standard S&P 500 Index Fund” was widely used to mean that the fund satisfied certain criteria about transparent pricing, low management fees and limits on trading costs. Consumers buying this fund would know what they were getting. According to Lewis Braham's book, The House that Bogle Built --I really liked this book, although apparently John C. Bogle hates it--Vanguard was actually a pioneer in the use of fund names that were simple and honest descriptions of the contents of the fund. He suggests it was a successful competitive move. Traditionally, mutual funds had colorful and meaningless "brand" names--often just th...

Re: Ob-Gyn requires prepayment of deductible for pregnancy services - is this typical?

We have had 2 babies in the last 3 years at two different OBGYN's. We also have a HDHP ($5,500) and also received the estimated costs from both OBGYN's. We don't have any type of co-payment or co-insurance, just a standard HDHP where we pay the first $5,500.

We were not asked to pay anything up front at either OBGYN. If I had been asked, I would have told them to send it to my insurance company.

Phoenix/Scottsdale Chapter Meetup

Good Afternoon: I recently moved to Scottsdale from Des Moines, IA. I coordinated the meetings for the Des Moines Chapter and really enjoyed the social time with fellow Bogleheads.

I wanted to put a post up to see if there was any interest in a meeting in the Scottsdale area in the next month or so. I will be happy to coordinate a date/time and restaurant for the meeting. The meeting will most likely be a Saturday lunch at a restaurant in Scottsdale.

Please reply to this post if you are interested in attending.

Thank you,
Kevin

Thanks Mel!

Bogleheads in DM: Please send me an email with topics you are interested in for the first meeting and where you are located in Des Moines (Ankeny, WDM, downtown, etc). Based on the responses, I'll find a centrally located meeting location, put together an agenda, and pick a date/time.

I'm looking forward to getting a chapter going in Des Moines!

We previously had State Farm and about two years ago I called around for new quotes. We went with Progressive for auto, home, and umbrella. I used intelliquote.com for term quotes and ended up going with Banner Life.

Re: WSJ Interview Request

My wife and I recently found the Bogleheads site after reading The Bogleheads' Guide to Investing book. A couple weeks ago we opened a Roth IRA with Vanguard up to the 2012 limit and plan to contribute the limit again in January 2013. My company 401K is with Fidelity where I contribute up to my company match. For our Roth, we wanted to be customers of Vanguard. I'll send her a note.
