Re: Questioning the conventional logic on dividend reinvestm

You do not have to send the dividends to a bank account or money market fund if you don't want to reinvest distributions. Vanguard allows you to direct the distributions to another fund. If stocks are above target, you can direct the stock dividends to your bond fund. This way you're not out of the...

Re: Best approaches to accumulating in a down market

Hopefully people have made clear that you don't "handle" a down market, even assuming you would be able to know one when you see one. I am baffled why you think overweighting small caps would have anything to do with this. If you have a planned asset allocation and you have drifted away from that p...

Re: Best approaches to accumulating in a down market

So here's a topic that has been bugging me lately. best approaches to adding/accumulating in a down market. for example, should you go overweight in e.g. small caps, especially when the market gives you such a nice pullback, or should you add across the board using specific weights that favor favor...

Re: Best approaches to accumulating in a down market

We're in a down market??.... "Nice pullback"... "Won't know for a few months"... Shows you joined in 2012. I'd think you should know that whole post is not Bogleheadish... from ~ Aug. 29 until last Wed., I'd say not so much a down market, as the market was making much ado about nothing, and yes, it...

Re: Houston Chapter

I went to the Houston chapter meeting 5 years back and was disappointed by meeting other Bogleheads. I don't know how others on this forum go about meeting other cheapstakes in person but I was quite disappointed: folks who enjoy $5 movies, cutting their own hair, and enjoy eating at Lube's. I pref...

Re: Master Thread for Austin Texas area Bogleheads

Does anyone know if there is an active Bogleheads community in the Houston area? If not, anyone interested is starting one? I am interested in the same. I did some digging in the local chapter forum and it seems Houston has never had any regular meet ups. A few over the past 2 years but nothing ong...

I've gotten a kick reading all the replies and I think the best advice has been given, but I'd like to add
this one additional thought.

Re: Have any of you dollar cost averaged in over 5 years

It half-heartedly did the last two years with mixed results. So this year I have scheduled my investments in such a way that I hope to stick with it.
Although, I am keeping cash on the side in case the market loses its collective sense and discounts a bunch of the stocks on my wishlist.

Re: Home maintenance costs: Does 1% hold true?

going along this line of thought, does anyone actually set money aside strictly for home maintenance costs (ex. a seperate account strictly for home repairs)? I include it in my budget as a "what-if," but it's usually lumped together with a bunch of other "what-ifs." I just assume that since I've bu...

Re: Investing (not speculating) in Bitcoin

I've enjoyed many of the comments about bit coins (BCs) specifically, but would it not make more sense and be less speculative to invest in services that target BCs? If anything, those services would have a more far reaching application (and hopefully appeal) than bit coins.

When I lived in the DC area there was a sizable Bogleheads group that met on certain Sunday afternoons in the back corner of a centrally located restaurant. We should follow this model. For example, we could meet at BlackFinn in the quiet room to the right at 2 pm on Sunday, January 5 or January 12...

honestly, I don't want to cure my audiophile upgrade-itis.
