Re: Avoiding the two house monster...

One can forgo the disclosure in lieu of $500 at closing. That was not the case here.

Re: Avoiding the two house monster...

Some clarification on the issue... New slab in the basement, we don't know when it was placed, but rumor mill through the realtors suggests it was an expensive process. My inspector determined new slab also has worrisome cracks, and the garage has evidence of substantial shifting on the floor (so mu...

Re: Avoiding the two house monster...

Why not sue him in small claims court? You can avoid attorney fees and it sounds like you have a good chance of winning. If so, a judgment would be placed on his property requiring settlement before he sold the house. I hadn't considered this. Perhaps do nothing and wait to see if he acts. Then aft...

Re: Avoiding the two house monster...

We attempted to split 50/50 and he declined. We are mentally ready to lose the whole deposit just to have this behind us. We are also tired of trying to track this guy down for days to respond to us. I am considering just letting this lie. The money will just sit in escrow. He can't sell his house u...

Re: Avoiding the two house monster...

I don't understand the "I have an attorney but I am asking bogleheads for legal advice." What does your attorney say? Are you looking for a new attorney? Our attorney had never formally "finalized' the contract, but he had never received a formal extension for attorney review either....

Avoiding the two house monster...

We are relocating and looking for a new house...and have run into a bit of a tangle. We had an accepted offer on a place, and at the inspection noticed significant issues with the foundation/slab (evidence of substantial cracking and the presence of a new slab that had been poured in the basement). ...

Re: Backdoor Roth IRA- Any changes for 2014?

Let me clarify a little... The rollover into the 403b is coming from an existing IRA from previous jobs and consists of all pretax dollars. The contributions to the tIRA will be new after-tax dollars, non-deductible, for conversion to backdoor Roth. That shouldn't incur additional taxes, correct? Do...

Re: Backdoor Roth IRA- Any changes for 2014?

I have plans to take an old rollover IRA and roll it into my current employer 403b. I want to get rid of this existing IRA so that I can easily contribute to a nondeductible traditional IRA and convert to backdoor Roth. Should I be concerned about doing all three of these steps in the same tax year?...

Re: Portfolio Advice-To pay down or not to pay down

Laura, Thank you so much for the "new direction" with the portfolio. I am going to start looking into what is required logistically to make this happen, starting with possible rollover of IRA to 403b. Zebrafish, My wife is a farmer...currently she is tending her flock...of children. Not re...

Re: Portfolio Advice-To pay down or not to pay down

BL, Thanks for the suggestion on rolling over the IRA into the 403b so that I can backdoor a Roth. I will be looking into that...and paying off my loan in short order. Grt2bOutdoors, I love being outdoors too...even on a tractor. Not farming on the side, more like excavating and tree work. I couldn'...

Portfolio Advice-To pay down or not to pay down

My wife and I met in medical school. Early in our marriage and shortly after completing medical school, we made the decision for my wife to stay at home with our three kids…so she has full debt and no income. This has been the best decision we ever made despite the effect you will see below that is ...

Re: I-Bonds: How long does it take to buy them?

I recently opened a TD account and the account was placed on hold pending a TD authorization form. I had to take the form to a local bank and have it signed with a medallion stamp. Has anyone had to deal with this process, and if so how long did it take before you could make purchases?
