Yes, in the mid-80s. I remember getting my state ID in the late 70s and the DMV employee looked at my birth certificate and asked, "You go by your middle name?" I answered yes, she said okay, and the switch was on. But I don't remember the details of the passport. Clearly, I had to present my government ID. But I wonder if it would be so simple today - I think things are more rigid/scrutinized since 9/11 regarding identification, etc., and I would think SS is a biggie. I may be overthinking the whole issue.Silentnight wrote: ↑Fri Mar 22, 2024 8:09 pm How did you get the US government to give you a passport?

Yes, this is a good idea. I will look into it. Thank you.tallguy3891 wrote: ↑Thu Mar 21, 2024 4:10 pm Just speaking as to what I would do if this was my situation: I would contact Social Security (SSA) now, not when it is close to my app date, in case there were significant issues requiring additional information. I would not want to get close to application time and have delays in getting my benefits, and maybe even worse, a delay in getting enrolled in Medicare. For me, a contact with SSA asap could solve the issue now so I didn't have to be concerned about it for the future. Having the "numident" corrected now could make the application a smooth process. If not, maybe not so smooth.

Re: Applying for Medicare/Social Security
Thank you all who have responded, you've put my mind at ease - for now (I'm a bit of a worrywart). I have a couple more years to dwell on this and do want to be prepared. Funny thing about how I'm named on the SS card. I remember applying at age 16, my card is signed by what I go by but even on the SS statements I don't see any indication of my (legal) first name being used at all. I'm sure the form must have been filled out in full, I just don't remember. I guess I'll find out when I contact them.
Thanks again.

Applying for Medicare/Social Security
Hello everyone. I have a somewhat unusual situation but probably not really uncommon. This concerns providing a birth certificate. I've always gone by my middle name with the exception of the first few years in grammar school (only). Everything in my adult life has been filled out as my middle name first. A couple years ago I tried to get a copy of my birth certificate but was rejected by Vital Statistics. There's another slight issue. Say for example my birth certificate says: Mari Elizabeth Smith (with an "i" in the first name) I've always identified myself as: Elizabeth Mary Smith Is this going to cause a problem when I register for Medicare/SS? I know they accept other forms such as vaccination, school and medical records. Not...

Spend a bit more than I usually might on one of my typical "splurges" (for me that's jewelry, art, and travel--for others I know it might be cars, watches, fine wine, hobbies, etc) Dye my hair a fun color (I've always wanted to do this but never have due to fears about what others would think, mostly in the work environment) Get a tattoo  (never have for the same reason as above--would be somewhere where it wouldn't be visible in work clothes) All of the above? Never had desire for a permanent tattoo although I've done a henna tattoo or two. Loved the hair dyeing - blue was my preferred. When there was talk about returning to the office I decided I wouldn't be able to because I'd just dyed my hair. Priorities. :D I'm back ...

Expect this has been mentioned already ... wish I’d more aggressively converted Traditional IRA to Roth before reaching RMD age. Thank goodness for this forum and making me aware of so much. I've entered the 6-0hh! territory and now with healthy retirement funds need to look at ACA possibilities, Social Security, and IMRAA issues and be smart. It's "a good problem to have" I know, but still concerned about making a mistake. Almost all my savings went into retirement funds so have only recently started in-service distributions for liquid savings for the possibility of ACA eligibility, retiring to another state, etc. I don't regret putting so much in retirement funds because I feared spending anything I could get my hands on - and ...

I thought oh, no! Then realized who it was. Now the question for next season is why. When the doctor is making a bid at the NYC gallery the list has a familiar name on it. I love a murder mystery! The last epi was rushed, don't know if they knew they had been renewed at that point and were trying to tie up some things. I love how Tudyk holds his "little hands" at his side like the alien's extra set of arms, most notably in episode one looking over the dead body. Kung kung! Re: New passport how long to obtain?
Renewed long expired passport very recently at the post office and was told 6-8 weeks. Received it in exactly two. Thanks to all for the replies. Sunflower, did you renew or did you have to obtain a new passport? My understanding is that if the passport was issued more then 15 years ago it can not be renewed. I am under the impression that a new passport takes longer then a renewal. My old passport was a couple years past renewal eligibility so I had to start from the beginning. Passport $110, post office processing fee $35, post office photograph fee $15 (you can get photos cheaper elsewhere; it was a convenience). There is a line on the form where they ask your travel date, I was asked about it because I left it blank. This may be of imp...

Re: Social Security Card as Identification for Real ID
I'm going through this now. I requested a birth certificate and was denied because the first name is different. I use my middle name, so EVERY document I have has my middle name listed first (including very old high school ID's). Luckily, it seems that an expired passport is accepted. I'll find out soon. It seems I'm going to have to legally change my name to the name I've used my entire life and get a new birth certificate. I'm terrified this may lead to problems with Social Security down the road. The name I use is listed and signed on the card, but I don't know if my birth certificate first name is on record (which I use as a middle name) and will cause problems later. Ugh! Edit: I mean an expired passport is accepted as proof of citizen...

Re: Thank you notes,,, out of favor these days?
As a long-distance maiden aunt with no children, I sincerely appreciate and enjoy thank you notes from the nieces/nephews and now great-nieces/nephews, written specifically to me, in their handwriting and sometimes baby scrawl (with mom holding the pencil/crayon). The notes have given me such joy over the years and I've loved hearing from them in their words (especially going from small children to teens), some including what they did that day or what they plan to do with the gift. I've been disappointed when gifts weren't acknowledged, not so much because a thank you note was deemed deserved, but because I felt the gift wasn't appreciated and I missed their banter. It isn't just a "thank you" -- it means something to some people.

They keep tabs on you and remind you it's time for certain appointments and if you're new they will "hound" you until you make appointments/take tests and get you updated. One issue I've had recently: trying to get the shingles shot (I know there's a nationwide shortage). I emailed my doctor and she ordered it, no problem; however, I had to check for availability. No. Yes? It's more where/how the money was invested, like a few others have mentioned. I'm winding down my work years and have nothing in taxable, a nice amount in Roth IRA/401k and very nice amount in a traditional 401k. Now I struggle with the best way to do things - moving to a LCOL state and buying a home and furnishings (life-long renter), and wary of the ACA subsidy cliff. I contemplate using Roth funds to buy a home outright (it was after all intended to be an emergency fund) and retire without debt/mortgage. Now I'm considering taking 401k distributions while still employed if possible, in order to avoid the subsidy cliff and have something on the outside. There's just a fear of making a mistake, not doing things in the best way pos...

An ambulance ride costs $1500-2000. An Uber costs $20. If you need the ambulance, for heaven's sake call it. But if not, call an Uber. This also applies to interhospital transfers. "Doc, I don't want to go by ambulance because it's so expensive. I know there is the liability thing, but I'd be willing to sign all that Against Medical Advice paperwork if you think the chances of something happening to me en route are less than 10%." How many hospitals allow this? I asked to take a taxi once instead of a ambulance, and they said no. It wasn't due to medical necessity. According to the nurse they just don't allow it. They even insist on transferring someone to another building of the hospital complex by ambulance, no doubt at a prett...

Grew up with unknowledgeable parents who only invested in government savings bonds. Luckily, Father had a stable federal government job and pension. In my early 20's a co-worker told me to open an IRA. I asked why and was told "because you're so young." I planned to, but tomorrow never came. In my late 20's there was a mandatory 401k meeting for young folks and new employees. I knew contributing was the right thing to do, but wanted to enjoy all my money now, so went along kicking and screaming. Now, I'd like to reach through time and strangle that girl for only allocating such a small percentage. Luckily, the company contributed 10% of income, and continues to do so. I haven't personally done this, but my understanding is the company(ies) pay a certain amount per hour, let's say $20 an hour. The catch is, it isn't your time, it's the dictation tape/file time. So, you may be given 60 minutes of dictation and depending on the situation or quality (a conference/interview with everyone speaking over each other; medical report with someone who has a heavy foreign accent) it could take you three hours to complete, which turns your rate to peanuts. If the transcriber is knowledgeable in legal and/or medical, s/he could do well. I would do well.

There's a famously frugal guy in the Midwest who lives in the same house he bought in the fifties. He's still frugal, despite becoming a billionaire and trading the title of "Richest man in the US" with Bill Gates a few times. His name is Warren Buffet. And yes, he has spent money, but he doesn't live in anywhere near the type of luxury that other people of his means do. People who are not billionaires outspend him annually. Sometimes people are frugal, even when they have the means. The frugal guy noted above has a private jet, so I think we need to stipulate that "frugal" has different meanings at different income levels. Question re 401(k) contribution discrepancy
Last year my bonus was deposited into my 401(k) on the last day of December. It did not register until the next business day, i.e., the next year. My check stub says the amount was contributed for 2015, my 401(k) account claims the contribution was made in 2016. Which is the correct/legal deposit date? I'm kind of bummed that I won't be able to deposit my bonus this year (because I will be maxed out); alternatively, this would also mean I didn't max out in 2015.
Any idea which is the "real" date of the annual contribution?

I rebalance once a year when I put more money into my Roth IRA. It's pretty close to my desired percentages and I really don't sweat it if it's slightly off. Rebalancing more than quarterly is probably a headache. I have eight funds in my little Roth and I like playing with my Excel pie charts. My more serious 401(k) is much simpler and I don't fiddle with it - it's on automatic rebalance quarterly.

Re: Is Cricket Wireless down for lots of people?
Ha! I bought a Cricket phone and had it exactly one week before this system failure. To be honest though, I didn't notice and seems to be fine. They sent an apology message but I won't consider asking for a credit.madsinger wrote:I felt a little silly because I just convinced someone this week to switch to Cricket! d'oh!
Been using it over a year and have had zero problems....until last night!

Re: series/ movies filmed in your home town?
Surprised no one from San Francisco has stepped up! It's expensive but scenic so a lot of shows have establishing shots but the principal filming is in Vancouver (surprise). Not that long ago in my neighborhood, Woody Allen filmed a scene at a popular pizza parlor. More recently, Hugh Laurie filmed a scene for an upcoming Hulu show. The thing that drives me nuts is when they use a cable car bell to remind you it's San Francisco, even though there's no cable car around that area!
Btenny, sounds like you missed the "Star Wars" years in Yuma. Every nerd's fantasy.

Professional athlete. His mama taught him well, but he still needs to show off. It's a fine line straddling the fence.
