Anybody else having trouble with Vanguard 2FA not sending texts to a Google Voice number? It worked fine for years, but recently texts have stopped going through to that number.

Re: San Jose, CA Area Bogleheads Chapter
This is a gentle reminder of the February meeting of the South Bay Bogleheads. Our meeting this month will be on Monday, February 11th, from 7-9pm at Merrill Gardens in Campbell. All are welcome. No RSVPs needed. You need not be a Vanguard client to attend. Our topic this month is International Investing. Arun Koparker will lead the discussion. Questions will include Are you investing globally? Are you investing enough? If you are not investing international, why not? What should be your time horizon? What valuation multiple would you put on foreign vs US stocks? How much international allocation is optimum? How often should you rebalance your portfolio? Everyone will have an opportunity to ask questions, express opinions, and share their e...

South Bay Bogleheads, November 2018 Meeting Announcement
Hello South Bay Bogleheads! We will meet again on Monday, November 12th , from 7-9pm at Merrill Gardens in Campbell. Everyone is welcome. First, we’ll hear brief comments from Members who attended the 2018 Bogleheads Conference a few weeks ago in Philadelphia. Then we will enjoy a presentation and discussion of Ray Dalio’s book, “Principles for Navigating Big Debt Crises” led by our own Chiming ‘Steve’ Yang. The book is available as a free download at https://www.principles.com/big-debt-crises . Dalio is one of the world’s most successful investors and entrepreneurs. He describes how debt crises work and the principles for dealing with them. This allowed his firm, Bridgewater Associates, to correctly anticipate key events and produce positi...

can it really be this simple? 30% Vanguard Total Stock Market Index VTSAX 15% Vanguard Total International Stock Index VTIAX 50% Vanguard Total Bond Index VBTLX ( or maybe I Bonds, CD's and TIPS as part of this) 5% Vanguard REIT Index VGSLX Yes, it is. Major questions are: 1-Is there a compelling reason to keep my assets in so many locations as they are now? 2-Is there a compelling reason not to move them all to one location.. Vanguard, Fidelity, etc? 3-Are there simple ways to minimize tax ramifications with future withdrawals particularly when I hit 70? Re: Newly Retired/Need Portfolio Help Please
Consider emergency funds in shades of grey. Would you really need to write a check for $105,000 immediately? The key is to have sufficient liquid assets to handle those emergencies. If an emergency arises you could write a check for $a today, put $b on your credit card tomorrow, transfer $c from money market to checking in 3 days, sell $d of funds in a week, etc. Here is my info---

Re: Newly Retired/Need Portfolio Help Please
Questions: 1. I would like input/opinions on fund of funds vs the 3 or 4 fund portfolio--or the 6 funds recommended in CoffeeHouse investor. Any need for tax free funds? I am striving for simplicity and efficiency. All of the "lazy" portfolios you mentioned are efficient. There may be a bit more efficiency in more funds, but you are also striving for simplicity. Obviously holding 3 funds is simpler than 6, and 1 (life strategy or target date) fund is even simpler. These are all tradeoffs of simplicity vs. control of the details, so the question is how much simplicity and how much control you want. Tax-free funds would be inefficient given the income you cited. And where to place the funds--I find it confusing to view the portfoli...

Re: cost basis methods for selling individual stocks
1) Since we are selling everything, am I correct that it does not matter which cost basis method we choose? If so, should I just choose FIFO, which seems to be the default? 2) Isn't it true that Vanguard has no idea what our cost basis is, since we bought these shares at TD Ameritrade? I'm trying to anticipate what difficulties I'll encounter with our 2013 taxes. Will TDA provide us with our cost basis or is this something we'll need to calculate on our own? Because you are selling all the stock, any cost basis method will give the same answer--100% of the cost. I went through this same thing recently. Vanguard only knows about cost if you and/or TD Ameritrade tell them. TDA can give you the cost basis, but I would cross-check those number...

Suppose that your target asset allocation is 50-50 and your total assets are $1,000,000. You've maxed out your tax-advantaged accounts and they contain $250,000. Even if those accounts contain all bonds, you'd need to put another $250,000 of bonds into your taxable accounts to maintain your 50-50 asset allocation.optimpessim wrote:This statement surprises me. What you were told may not be the complete picture. A 401A has a vesting schedule and you should get it to understand your options. A 401A's actual value depends on how much you are vested--from 0 to 100%. Your options and rights to that 401A also changed when you left that employer.alanwbaker wrote: * About that 401A with your former employer... Where do you fit into the vesting schedule? A lazy portfolio is good, but it doesn't have to be 33% of each. You are concerned about market risk, so consider tweaking your asset allocation to percentages you are comfortable with (rather than trying to time the market).
You didn't mention whether these three accounts are taxable, IRA, 401K, or something else. Do you need to continue using all three of these accounts? There are advantages to consolidating and simplifying.
VBMFX, VTSMX, and VGTSX are good, but the Admiral versions of these funds are even lower cost.

Hi Robert,
Muni bonds compare favorably to corporate bonds when 1) interest rates are high and 2) your effective tax rate is high. So be sure to do the math for your situation before getting too enthusiastic about munis. Total bond market index funds are dandy for taxable accounts too.

Boilerup1, you're in an enviable position and you're making the right moves. Max out your tax-advantaged accounts then put other disposable income into a taxable account that maintains your desired asset allocation.

I did not list Taxable Accounts since I don't have any. I only have checking/saving accounts with upper mid 5 digits. My 401a is cash in tax shelter annuity. I was told there is no stock or bond in 401a. 401a is 81% of my total investments All I have is 2 years of contribution in 401k. 401k is 19% of my total investments. I listed asset allocation as 45%/25%/30%. I plan to open Roth IRA for HER and HIS on Jan 2/2014 with $11,000 in each account. Maybe also open $10,000 Taxable Account in 2014. Thanks again of reviewing my porfolio. Vanessa Perfect--I get it now. Some thoughts... * About company stock... Buy it even if you hold it for the minimum period--it's 15% free money. * About that 401A with your former employer... Where do you fit in...

Re: windfall in high tax california, what to do
Asset allocation is all about your personal risk tolerance. Has that changed? Consider Larry Swedroe's table at http://www.bogleheads.org/wiki/Asset_al ... te_note-10.killian wrote: 2) Do I change asset allocation? Go more conservative? After the big tax hikes over the past years, I estimate that at least 40% of this check will be forked over to government. I think our portfolio is tilted to small and value with less international than most.
Desired Asset allocation: 70% stock, 30% bonds ? Not sure.
Desired International allocation: 40%, not sure
International allocation is pretty subjective too. In A Random Walk Down Wall Street, Burton Malkiel says 28% is optimal but Jack Bogle holds 0.

First consider the sum of your investment--taxable accounts, Roth IRA's, traditional IRA's, 401a, 401k, the whole works. Your 70/30 strategic asset allocation should be applied to the total of these, not to particular accounts. http://www.bogleheads.org/wiki/Asset_allocation[/quote]
Hi Vanessa,
Suggestions on your tax-advantaged investments are only meaningful in the context of your other investments.
You didn't request suggestions on your taxable accounts so I infer that you are more satisfied with these. We need to know at least 1) What is the asset allocation within these accounts and 2) what percentage of your total investments they represent.

Your 70/30 strategic asset allocation should be applied to the total of these, not to particular accounts. http://www.bogleheads.org/wiki/Asset_allocation You have a lot of different funds--too many. Look seriously at the "lazy" portfolios at http://www.bogleheads.org/wiki/Lazy_portfolios . You'll still have quite a few different accounts, so next look at allocating your bonds, stock, international, etc. to the best accounts and dramatically reducing the number of funds in each--ideally to one or two funds per account. Your 4-year-old computer may not even need to be replaced. Most computers of that age have accumulated software that slows them down. Wiping the disk and reloading the operating system is much more cost effective than buying new hardware. But if you decide to buy new hardware... o Get a good external monitor, keyboard, and mouse to plug into your laptop. This gives you the ergonomics of a desktop environment with the portability of a laptop. Your aging eyes (and the rest of your body) will thank you. A docking station is not needed. o If you use the above "desktop" setup a lot (I do), how much will you use the computer as a standalone laptop? Consider a smaller size. A 17" laptop is a lot to lug around. o Lenovo Thinkpads are...

Bogleheads will not be surprised by this, but a paper http://papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cfm? ... id=2327042 from Oxford University’s Saïd Business School demonstrates that mutual funds recommended by consultants perform worse than other funds. If you seriously plan to use a computer with XP after April 8, 2014, plan to isolate it from the net. Otherwise, vulnerabilities that remain unpatched on XP will be exploited by cybercriminals and your computer will become infected with malware. As jchef noted, no antivirus program or scanner will prevent this.

Are you a heavy or light user of the cellular network? If you are a minimalist, consider Airvoice Wireless with that Nexus 4--they have a $10-a-month rate. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Un ... _operators for a list of such MVNO's that use the physical networks of the big 4 carriers at much lower rates. The Nexus 4 uses GSM, so you'll need a provider that uses AT&T's or T-Mobile's network.

The best deals come from a fleet manager. They are motivated by volume, not profit-per-car. Hi paulsiu, My cat travels coast to coast twice a year with stopovers--over 20 flights so far. My suggestions: [*] You can register the cat with the airline anytime before the flight, but sooner is better because there is a maximum number of in-cabin pets per flight. Airline charges vary widely. [*] I get vet certificates annually but no airline has ever asked for one. Including 5 trips to California. [*] The cat will refuse food and water during the trip. Stop the food and water 24 hours before departure. [*] Do NOT put the cat into cargo. The under-seat space is different on every flight so a soft-sided carrier is essential. [*] Do NOT allow the TSA to put the cat through the Xray machine. It is not intended for animals. [*] Do NOT sedate...
