Re: “New Bitcoin Investors Explain Why They’re Buying at Record Prices“
you are right. but the stock market does not go up in the modern day and age because of an increase in productivity and increase in goods and services otherwise PE ratios would not be at crazy extremes. the stock market now goes up because it is the only way to keep up with inflation (not cpi). people now use the stock market as a way to not fall behind

the same can be asked of all bogleheads dollar cost averaging into index funds at record PE ratios and fairly stagnant earnings. I love this post on bitcoinhackers.org:

Re: Bitcoin: What is it, in Plain English
bitcoin is just money.... nothing more nothing less
many believe it is a better store of value than other money over a long timeframe
many believe it is a good medium of exchange because it is digitally native and does not involve a third party when transferring
it has properties that make confiscation difficult but not impossible
it is also deflationary as terminal supply will be reached in the far future
if those properties make it attractive then owning it as a money can offer a lot of jurisdictional freedom (crossing international boarders with portable cash that is invisible)

That is in fact the whole point of why Bitcoin will never be an investment. It can be a speculation or a digital currency but not both at the same time.

Re: Winklevoss: The Case for $500,000 Bitcoin
First and foremost, bitcoin is not a scam. There is not some Madoff type character that is scamming people. Bitcoin is a real thing that has value. It’s value is based on what others are willing to pay for it. This is no different than some rare armor on the World of Warcraft, beanie babies, or gold. Fact of the matter is, there are people on this planet who value bitcoin. Period. What bitcoin really is, is a speculative tool. People who buy it, do so with no other purpose than the hope that one day it will be worth a lot more than the purchase price. That’s why I own a fraction of a coin. I do so because I am enjoying the ride and maybe, if I get lucky, I can sell it for far more than what I bought it for. You never know. What about it's ...

Why would anyone consider bitcoin to be a "store of value" when nothing in Satoshi Nakamoto's paper says that that was a design goal? The "store of value" and "digital gold" are retconned storylines that were invented only after it became clear that bitcoin had failed completely at it's stated purpose, which was for a) "small casual transactions," b) over the Internet, at c) a much much lower cost than credit cards. The whole argument was that the possibility of reversing transactions was costly because of the need for mediation, and that huge cost savings were possible by designing a system in which transactions were irreversible. here is a quote by satoshi :: "As a thought experiment, imagine ...

Re: Bonds: The situation and near-term perspective
with no yield the most viable solution is gold (a zero coupon long/infinite duration asset). Bonds may appreciate as rates go negative but you depend on that appreciation to match inflation to not lose money. gold as a rare asset will appreciate in a no yield bond environment as will stocks due to lack of other areas for yield.fingoals wrote: ↑Thu Aug 27, 2020 4:12 pm I won't pretend that I decently understand current situation around bonds (especially in light of today's Fed message). Re: Winklevoss: The Case for $500,000 Bitcoin
One difference between bitcoin and a commodity like gold is that there is a very enthusiastic and evangelical community of people working on it and attempting to increase its value (as in intrinsic value of the good by improving the network etc., I don't mean pumping the price although there's a fair share of those people as well...). Just from looking around, it's hopefully clear that one should never underestimate the entrepreneurial spirit and resourcefulness of the open source software community. When you buy bitcoin, you are not just buying a collection of electrons in the cloud that you hope can be offloaded onto some other sucker in the future. I mean, that might be half of it. But you are also investing in the labor of a group of t...

Not really, because security for other systems can be updated. The algorithms for Bitcoin are fixed at inception.
I thought you might say exactly this but my understanding is that this is incorrect. Bitcoin is not immutable. Changes to Bitcoin simply require consensus. I'm sure someone will chime in if I'm incorrect.
This is incorrect. the consensus change would require everyone on the network running a node to all agree at once to change the number of hard caped 21million. If some want it changed then they fork off the network and create their own new bitcoin that no one uses. those who want to keep their 21million cap continue running existing bitcoin software and just ignore those who want a larger cap. I will also note that the scarcity claim is absurd. There is no scarcity of numbers and no scarcity of cryptocurrencies that can be created. Sorry, but this comment shows a clear misunderstanding of what is meant by Bitcoin's scarcity, especially "and no scarcity of cryptocurrencies that can be created." As I've said in other Bitcoin threads, perhaps the issues that arise on this forum when discussing Bitcoin have little to do with Bitcoin and more to do with the tendency of members to post even though they don't have "informed" opinions. No, I understand the claims. The problem is that as demand for bitcoin increases, there will be an increasing supply of altcoins to temper its price. Any altcoin that has as good or be...

the argument of no scarcity because of an infinite supply of other cryptocurrencies is incorrect. The network effects, current value, and existing transaction history (chain length) prevent any new coin from achieving the first mover advantage. new chains can be created but they don't dilute existing value they just hope achieve new value. just as other precious metals don't detract from golds already existing stock and monetary properties.
