Re: Walmart Plus Feels Like A Scam
I have been using Walmart+ since the pandemic. I like it. I use it mainly to buy groceries for delivery. There is no charge when I buy more than $35, which is not hard to do with inflation. They are prompt and accurate and almost always have what I order. For the cases when they’re out of stock, it pays to designate a substitute item. For items not available in the store, they will ship free with fairly fast service—-usually two to the three days. For delivery from store, I buy fresh fruit like strawberries and blueberries, vegetables like bell pepper, and carrots, and bags of kale and other items like eggs, frozen vegetables, bread. All excellent quality and good prices.

I will stop my discussion on this point. I am happy with my finance only PC and I do think it increases security on many fronts including email phishing.
We strongly disagree.
If you are convinced that it is impossible for you to be deceived by a phishing email, this discussion is obviously not interesting, but the point we are making is that a separate financial computer, whatever its virtues, don't do much, if anything to mitigate that risk.

Re: Dedicated Financial Computer Master Thread
Patrick Unless you avoid email completely you could still receive phishing email somewhere else. And if you are fooled then you are fooled. Suppose you do get the phishing email on your separate email only computer. It says it is from your bank. It says someone has just transferred thousands of dollars out of your account. It says that if you didn't mean to do that, the only way to get the money back is for you to make another transfer. If you are fooled by the phishing email then you will go over to your financial only PC and make the transfer. Of course, we can come up with far-fetched scenarios.. As a saying goes, it’s hard to make something full proof because fools are too smart. Having a separate PC slows the reaction time down and giv...

I think a primary requirement for a financial computer is to satisfy the fraud protection policies of your financial companies. Many of the policies require an audit of your computer in the event of a major theft. To me, the use of a virtual machine, or even Linux is questionable for a representative from the financial company to understand so I use a plain vanilla windows PC always updated. Backing up to multiple drives of any kind is much faster and easier using an incremental backup utility like Freefilesync

Synchronize Files and Folders
Key features FreeFileSync is a folder comparison and synchronization software that creates and manages backup copies of all your important files. Instead of copying every file every time, FreeFileSync determines the differences between a source and a target folder and transfers only the minimum amount of data needed. FreeFileSync is Open Source software, available for Windows, macOS, and Linux.

Re: Flash drives vs external HDs?
An article about USB flash drive reliability https://www.usbmemorydirect.com/blog/are-flash-drives-reliable/ So, how long can you expect a flash drive's lifespan to be? The answer depends mostly on how much you use it. The main measure of a flash drive's lifespan is its number of write cycles -essentially, the finite number of times that the drive's data blocks can be erased and rewritten. After a certain number of write cycles, the materials in the drive that transfer electrical charge start to get worn out, making the memory more likely to fail. However, most flash drive users won't actually hit this limit, since it's in the tens or hundreds of thousands. A USB card that gets handed out at a conference and used a handful of times has an e...

If you live in a high income tax rate state, it is better to hold them in taxable. If you hold the tips in tax deferred you pay state tax on the interest when you withdraw. If you hold them in taxable, you will not pay state tax. Last I checked, the usual state tax ate here in California is about 9.3%, but it can go over 12%.

You should receive a 1099INT for the Tbill transaction. The withdrawal from the money market fund is not a taxable event so you will not receive a tax document on it.My question is if I still need to report these two sales on the 1040 Schedule D (Capital Gain/Loss) page so that the IRS sees these transactions, even though no capital gain/loss resulted. Thank you.
Many brokers, such as Fidelity and Schwab will not issue their 1099s until later in February.
BTW there’s a monster thread around here on taxation of treasury bills etc. Best to ask the question there so not to clutter the discussion.

Trademarks don't expire. The Law Review articles about the intersection of copyright and trademark practically write themselves. I found an article about this The difference with Disney’s Mickey Mouse is to do with trademarks and the changing nature of the character. Firstly, Disney has tightened its association with the video of Steamboat Willie by using it in the opening credits for all of its films since 2006. Trademarks are protected under a different US law, and do not expire so long as the company continues to submit the proper paperwork. Trademarks are designed to protect against consumer confusion, so any use of Mickey Mouse which suggests he belongs to a brand other than Disney is illegal. Lessing suggests that this might not be a...

This post is actionable for frugal bogleheads who are interested in saving money by downloading content from sites like Gutenberg. there are a few very well-known pieces of work that will lose their copyright in the near future. That includes the songs of Hank Williams - including 'Your Cheatin’ Heart’, 'Hey Good Lookin’’ and his ‘Lovesick Blues’. The works of Welsh poet Dylan Thomas also enter the public domain next year - including the oft-quoted ‘Do not go gentle into that good night’. David Enna on the inflation breakeven rate implied by the latest 5 year TIPS auction: Inflation breakeven rate With the 5-year Treasury note trading with a nominal yield of 3.87% at the auction’s close, this TIPS gets an inflation breakeven rate of 2.16%, much lower than results for this maturity in recent auctions. The market is now pricing inflation through the next five years very close to the Federal Reserve target of 2%. Which raises the question: Is the market crazy? OP In Case you missed it a lot of good advice here If you are a working stiff, you can file form W4 to have extra tax withheld by the end of the year. It can be up to your entire pay, after other mandatory deductions like social security tax. So whatever you take home now could be an extra amount withheld. The advantage of withheld tax is that it doesn't matter if you paid it on Jan 1 or Dec 31st, it's all 2023 withholding and equivalent. You can also have amounts withheld from IRA distributions, if you'd like, with similar effect. You can make an estimated payment today, and it will count as a Q4 estimated payment. This will reduce your underpayment penalty, but not eliminate, unless this 16k tax liability arose during Q4, or you meet a sa...

You cannot buy tbills at auction with an online order. You have to place a broker assisted call and they charge $25 commission iirc.
They have relatively poor options for login security. They only support text message 2FA.
You have to lock down Bank of America also since my accounts are linked and, if I get into BofA, I can get into ME (and viceversa).

Is the Symantec hard token pin protected? The 2FA token can be used to reset a password, so is a single point of compromise. A criminal would need my username and password and the hardware token. This is three points of compromise? The web site has a forgot username link and the forgot password link uses a Symantec code for authentication. The Symantec code is the only robust authentication in all of that. A hard token may not be lost with any other identifying info, in which case it will not be useful. But best practice is for the password security domain and 2FA security domain not to overlap, and using 2FA to authenticate password resets violates that. The numbers 10%: Income up to $11,600 ($23,200 for married couples filing jointly) 12%: Income over $11,600 ($23,200 for joint filers) 22%: Income over $47,150 ($94,300 for joint filers) 24%: Income over $100,525 ($201,050 for joint filers) 32%: Income over $191,950 ($383,900 for joint filers) 35%: Income over $243,725 ($487,450 for joint filers) 37%: Income over $609,350 ($731,200 for joint filers). FDLXX cannot be used as your core position.

I’m not sure the total implications of this, but you do have to get on the website to transfer money into the account. It does not happen automatically when, for example, a tbill matures.

Edit. Read the whole review. It lists specific problems with the device. I will not be buying it in the near future. One Year In.... Disappointed but Not Surprised (It's Fine)
So it's been about a year with the Scribe (ordered it day 1 and got it at launch which I think was November 22)....
My current feelings about the device remain pretty much identical to my initial impressions. Great hardware, underbaked software, way behind the competition overall.

Still $1.99. I just bought it. I borrowed from the library but decided it’s one that I want to keep. Noticed they give a 20 cent credit towards new book purchases.

Re: Total monthly cost of Ooma Tello
My OBi 200 still works well also. See this discussion on Google support. Once the support for obi2xx is over, we will no longer have this free service "End of support" (your first post) is not the same as "End of Life". "End of support" means Poly/OBi won't be making firmware updates after 2023. Our OBi devices will continue to work with Google Voice until Google makes a radical change that requires a firmware update from Poly. The last such major change was two or three years ago when Google made a drastic, and necessary, security change to how our OBi devices securely log into Google Voice. Poly made other firmware updates before the Google Voice secure login update, but I don't recall that any of these earli...

Re: 2023 TurboTax DESKTOP to require website login.
I think H&R Block does not require a user account registration. You can usually buy the desktop version with federal and state preparation and five federal e-file’s for about $25 around Christmas time.Joe Public wrote: ↑Fri Oct 20, 2023 2:34 pm What are some good alternatives for someone who is looking for a desktop option with no login/user account requirement?

Re: IRS extends CA filing deadline to Nov 16, 2023
It is weird that they announce this on the day of the deadline. If I had known about this, I would have delayed paying and earned one more month of interest on the balance due.
