Pay with a credit card as an extension to file and then enter that into TurboTax. It will subtract that from the tax due either e-filing or paper file. disclaimer. I’ve never done this for paper file, but I have done it many times for e-filing.

For situations like this and others, it is worthwhile to go through the id.me hassle and set up an account for yourself at irs.gov. Iirc you can look up the “transcript” of your return.Seems like all I can do right now is wait for the letter from the IRS.

You can also pay the tax with an extension to file. Then enter the payment into your tax program so you have zero due.

Re: How to Report T-Bill and Money Market Sales
You should receive a 1099INT for the Tbill transaction. The withdrawal from the money market fund is not a taxable event so you will not receive a tax document on it.My question is if I still need to report these two sales on the 1040 Schedule D (Capital Gain/Loss) page so that the IRS sees these transactions, even though no capital gain/loss resulted. Thank you.
Many brokers, such as Fidelity and Schwab will not issue their 1099s until later in February.
BTW there’s a monster thread around here on taxation of treasury bills etc. Best to ask the question there so not to clutter the discussion.

How much was the monthly payment? I ask that because my payment is $.40 a month., $4.80 a year. I had it deducted from my Social Security payment with no problem so far. But in retrospect, it would probably have been better to pay the whole amount for the year if the insurance company website allowed it.

Wellstrade transfers work at a glacial pace. I initiated a transfer on January 3, and received an email acknowledgment that said they take 5 to 7 business days. Beyond the email, no indication at all about the transfer on the Wells Fargo website.whodidntante wrote: ↑Mon Jan 08, 2024 11:31 am

Re: Mickey Mouse goes out of copyright in 2024
Trademarks don't expire. The Law Review articles about the intersection of copyright and trademark practically write themselves. I found an article about this The difference with Disney’s Mickey Mouse is to do with trademarks and the changing nature of the character. Firstly, Disney has tightened its association with the video of Steamboat Willie by using it in the opening credits for all of its films since 2006. Trademarks are protected under a different US law, and do not expire so long as the company continues to submit the proper paperwork. Trademarks are designed to protect against consumer confusion, so any use of Mickey Mouse which suggests he belongs to a brand other than Disney is illegal. Lessing suggests that this might not be a...

At least the original steamboat Willy cartoon. Later cartoons where the drawings look more modern are still under copyright. This post is actionable for frugal bogleheads who are interested in saving money by downloading content from sites like Gutenberg. there are a few very well-known pieces of work that will lose their copyright in the near future. That includes the songs of Hank Williams - including 'Your Cheatin’ Heart’, 'Hey Good Lookin’’ and his ‘Lovesick Blues’. The works of Welsh poet Dylan Thomas also enter the public domain next year - including the oft-quoted ‘Do not go gentle into that good night’. We also have Noddy - the little man with the red and yellow car. Or, more precises, the original illustrations of Noddy – and not t...

David Enna on the inflation breakeven rate implied by the latest 5 year TIPS auction: Inflation breakeven rate With the 5-year Treasury note trading with a nominal yield of 3.87% at the auction’s close, this TIPS gets an inflation breakeven rate of 2.16%, much lower than results for this maturity in recent auctions. The market is now pricing inflation through the next five years very close to the Federal Reserve target of 2%. Which raises the question: Is the market crazy? Whatever happens over the next 4 years, 10 months, investors in CUSIP 91282CJH5 at today’s auction got a low-risk, appealing result, especially versus the 5-year nominal Treasury. https://tipswatch.com/2023/12/21/5-year-tips-reopening-auction-gets-real-yield-of-1-710-on-t...

A typical Costco carries 4000 items compared with a supermarket with tons of thousands of items and a Walmart that has hundreds of thousands. This causes issues for me. Examples. No non-whitening toothpaste. No shredded wheat without frosting sugar. No unscented moisturizing lotions. Most of the time they only have boneless skinless sardines Their stores are disorganized, and it’s hard to find things. I think they deliberately do that to force you to walk around the store and get impulse buys. They do not label the products found on an aisle. I can easily beat their prices by shopping the sales and I don’t have to buy humongous quantities. I ...

Re: IRS underpayment penalty - 8% interest rate - Need Help
OP In Case you missed it a lot of good advice here If you are a working stiff, you can file form W4 to have extra tax withheld by the end of the year. It can be up to your entire pay, after other mandatory deductions like social security tax. So whatever you take home now could be an extra amount withheld. The advantage of withheld tax is that it doesn't matter if you paid it on Jan 1 or Dec 31st, it's all 2023 withholding and equivalent. You can also have amounts withheld from IRA distributions, if you'd like, with similar effect. You can make an estimated payment today, and it will count as a Q4 estimated payment. This will reduce your underpayment penalty, but not eliminate, unless this 16k tax liability arose during Q4, or you meet a sa...

You cannot buy tbills at auction with an online order. You have to place a broker assisted call and they charge $25 commission iirc.
They have relatively poor options for login security. They only support text message 2FA.
You have to lock down Bank of America also since my accounts are linked and, if I get into BofA, I can get into ME (and viceversa).

Is the Symantec hard token pin protected? The 2FA token can be used to reset a password, so is a single point of compromise. A criminal would need my username and password and the hardware token. This is three points of compromise? The web site has a forgot username link and the forgot password link uses a Symantec code for authentication. The Symantec code is the only robust authentication in all of that. A hard token may not be lost with any other identifying info, in which case it will not be useful. But best practice is for the password security domain and 2FA security domain not to overlap, and using 2FA to authenticate password resets violates that. I'm not saying that using the hard Symantec token is weak encryption, but that it is ...

I bought and read the Spanish translation of Andy Weir’s The Martian. I don’t think the translator did a good job. The original version in English is slangy and colloquial with many inside jokes on popular culture topics like Star Trek. I found the Spanish translation stiff and formal. I have little experience reading books in Spanish. Perhaps that is the accepted style for Spanish writing?I now read most of my books in Spanish, and most of the translated titles simply are not available in paper or not easily accessible.

Re: I Bonds Mega Thread (I Bond Heads Rejoice!)
David Enna of Tipswatch calculates that, with today’s CPI print, I am hip to Wall Street lingo , the variable rate for iBonds starting November 1, 2023 will be 3.94%.
If the fixed rate is higher than the current 0.9%, then the total interest will be higher than 5%.

Re: BND exceeding my patience - need something different
I agree. Other factors are that the US national debt is 120% of GDP and our current year deficit is about 7% of GDP. The treasury interest payments are skyrocketing past $900 billion per year, more than we spend on defense. This will force the government to sell more treasury bonds, thus increasing the interest rate and lowering the BND price.

Expect to see more of this. California governor Newsom just signed into law a bill to raise the minimum wage for fast food workers to $20 per hour.

Re: Investment in Gold
California and probably other states charge sales tax on purchases of physical gold, even if they were online. The California rules are pretty complex. See this

According to that FAQ, the gold is not insured. It is not loaned out. It is audited by a third party.
People who claim that the assets are loaned out, should provide references. Here’s what the FAQ says.
Is the Trust's Gold Ever Traded, Leased or Loaned?
Gold held in the Trust's allocated account is the property of the Trust and is not traded, leased or loaned under any circumstances.

Re: HSA and Living in California :(
You have two choices from what I recall for your "cash" settlement account. I am currently using SPRXX which is Fidelity Money Market. I just checked today and it's current 7 day yield is 5.05%. You can manually move everything into FDLXX (CA tax free) shortly after deposits and it will auto-liquidate as needed if you move money out. My FDLXX amount shows up as an available cash balance. I am trying an experiment to bring the balance on my FDRXX core account to zero. So far, the website has not squawked. A T bill will autoroll in a couple of months and it will be interesting to see what happens. I think they will take the money from my FDLXX. The T bill face value will be deposited into FDRXX and the purchase price for the new tb...

Quant:
Where do you have your HSA? I have not seen that on my Fidelity account.
My experience is that I get what I need for CA tax reporting in teeny tiny print at the bottom of my last HSA statement for the year. Like 6 point font that I would never be able to read without my glasses.

Re: HSA and Living in California :(
Preparing tax returns on a California HSA is a pain in the ass. California expects you to report income on your tax return but all brokers that I am aware of do not break down the account income or give you a 1099. Even if the income is, for example, treasury interest and not taxable by the state, you have to report it and then designate it as not taxable. If you buy and sell stock or mutual funds you have to keep track of the basis and enter any gains or losses to your state tax return.
If you move to another state and then withdraw money from your HSA, it is unclear to me whether the new state will tax the withdrawal.
