I hope this thread serves as a cautionary tale to those who say "well, probate isn't so bad." For an older relative, especially an ill, older relative, consider a revocable living trust. I did that for the last couple of older relatives not long after they were diagnosed with terminal illnesses. For the last one I paid ~$2,500 back in 2018 to an eldercare lawyer for a revocable living trust, pour-over will, financial and health care POAs. ... A trusts and estates lawyer would probably be a better fit for this. Our lawyer charged $3,800 for a probate we just opened. It is also a simple $60,000 estate (all Ibonds). Basically, nothing else.
