Re: Cybertruck-anyone else get to try it on?
But I can use the same reasoning for folks who buy a luxury vehicle over a toyota. Sure a luxury vehicle has more amenities/features, but at some level luxury vehicle owners are also making a decision based on vanity -- vehicle looks, curb appeal, status symbol etc. A $30,000 camry does everything that a $120,000 lexus does for transportation needs. You are paying for features, but I also think people make the decision based on vanity. If you had just said “some,” or even “most,” people make the decision on vanity, I wouldn’t disagree with you, but you made it an absolute “people make the decision on vanity.” One could argue that a traditional Boglehead would not buy a Mercedes EQS EV SUV; it’s expensive and will not get you from point A t...

Re: Cybertruck-anyone else get to try it on?
The only people I can see buying a Cybertruck are those seeking a lot of attention. It seems incredibly impractical in so many ways. The overly minimalist/sterile interior, poor range, small frunk, terrible visibility, lack of shifter, door handles, or turn indicator stalk, lack of any paint options, surface rust issues, panel misalignment and atrociously high price make for a very well rounded undesirable vehicle. I was most surprised that the tonneau cover isn't water tight. I would be shocked if even half the reservation holders actually follow through with an order. But admittedly I may be underestimating the sheer number of people that are desperately looking for attention. No interest whatsoever. Too expensive, too weird looking. I d...

I was not a super early reservation holder, current expectation is our truck would be ready late this year or January of 2025. Normally when vehicle shopping we as a couple like to try things on for size as we are very different heights/weights. The Tesla experience seems to be they get your payment before getting in the car, though nowadays test rides are available for the cars. This is not true for the Cybertruck yet. We reached out online to someone that was expecting delivery, begged for a chance to just sit in the truck. The day after he accepted delivery we were able to sit in the truck, he drove around for a couple miles. The interior of the front row was better than expected. It has always been a dream and ambition of mine to be in silicon valley. So you signed already, right? If you live in the Bay Area, you can raise a family in your apartment or rented house. I know there's a lot of propaganda in this country that you have to own a house to raise a family properly. That's obviously nonsense. Or, you know, get that L7 position and buy a house. Most people in the Bay Area can't really afford a house and should rent. But L7 can afford it. Of course, this only makes sense if you actually want to live there. Otherwise just rent. I agree with this sentiment. You are single, renting makes it way easier to up and leave if for whatever reason it does not pan out. But most people in Bay area really ought to rent.

My wifes 3.0T 2018 Audi Q7 had audicare which covered the first 5 years of scheduled services. I did some research and test drives over the weekend, and my two favorites thus far are the Honda CRV hybrid and the Subaru Outback with the turbocharged engine (several of the trim levels come with this engine). My main "need" is for a good snow car--we do a lot of skiing in the Sierras each winter. So I need all-wheel-drive and wheels that can handle slush, ice, and several inches of snow without being subject to chain control. That said, I live in the Bay Area so most of my driving is basic freeway, city, suburb stuff. Both would do the job here. Yes Subaru's AWD is known to be superior. But unless you frequently do off pavement driving it won't gain you any additional advantage. My main concerns are longer-term reliability an...

Re: Tesla in Cold Weather
For cold weather and high speed, a good rule of thumb is 50% of miles. To get the full 320, you have to be in warm climate (70+ degrees) with a max constant speed of ~40 mph. (Blame the feds for these calculations.) You can save a few electrons by using your seat heaters more and cabin heater less. The temp gauge is a 'resistor' type and it does take awhile to adjust to the outdoors if your car sleeps in a garage. Mine takes 10+ minutes, but then I don't pay that much attention to it anymore. (In SoCal, so not concerned about roads going below freezing.) Can't address teh window question, since the car has never been below 30. I own a MYP and have always wondered why teslas advertised vs actual is so low. I didn't know feds are to be blame...

No it doesn't!
I have started marking them as spam. However a better approach is just create a new shadow email and give it to online purchases etc. I plan to infact just create new email ID for a year for all purchases. Its a throw away ID that I will use everywhere this year (except important stuff like school communication, bank, family friends etc.) and simply delete it at the end of the year.

Pretty challenging is not how I'd phrase it. Unless you are making turns at full lock you don't have to worry driving in 4wd. I find most roads are failry straight and I can exercise the 4wd just fine when needed/required. It doesn't have to be full lock. I've felt binding at just a few degrees of turn. That's your choice. Most of the roads near me are pretty short between turns. My average drive makes a 90 degree turn every 2 miles. And switching back and forth every mile is probably not good either. I have to go out of my way once a month to drive a 10 mile straight enough stretch. Obviously your mileage may vary. That’s interesting , never felt binding with small turns. And once you are outside your driveway I can’t imagine where 90 deg...

I've owned a 2008 urban runner and have currently a 2023 40th anniversary. Both are 4wd. I didn't see it mentioned, but the thing I miss the most from the 4th Gen is the center diff. On the 5th Gen only the limited has a center diff. That means you can't use the 4wd on pavement unless it's covered in snow. Even light rain you should stick to 2wd. And for all part time 4wd you need to drive 10 miles a month in 4wd to keep it properly lubed. Without a center diff that's pretty challenging to do. I happened to have a 10 mile straight road by my house. So I try to drive it once a month. Pretty challenging is not how I'd phrase it. Have been a highly satisfied owner of a 2017 Honda Ridgeline RTL-E. It's been extremely well maintained and is in good cosmetic shape, though I do treat it as a truck -- camping/hunting/dog as passenger so there are some purely cosmetic signs of wear in the interior. While I'm not itching to replace it, I do feel like I'll get a better resale on it if I part with it before I cross that 100k mileage threshold on the extended warranty. I would probably look to get a new Rav4 Hybrid or consider something like a CR-V. I live in the DC/NOVA area and although the truckbed has come in h...

Re: Amazon Rate increases - alternatives [Amazon Prime Video]
This thread is intended to be actionable. I have been a prime member for years, but I’m thinking making commercial free tv a surcharge is probably the last straw between that and healthy rate increases. I’m trying to determine the value proposition - the free shipping is nice, but I tend to think I can bundle to get to $25 purchase, which avoids shipping charges correct? - I can’t remember last time I watched Prime so not a big factor - perhaps the biggest consideration is I assume I’d lose 5% back rebate on our Amazon synchrony. Any viable alternatives to mitigate this? Any other considerations? For those that have left Prime, how have you adapted? I will still be a frequent user so not sure if this is a Penny wise pound foolish decision....

Re: your system for reviewing credit card transactions
every single transaction sends me a text. I review it when I receive the text. That's it.mookie wrote: ↑Mon Jan 01, 2024 10:39 pm I have four credit cards (Fidelity Visa 2% cash back; Costco for travel, gas; Amazon prime for Amazon; Citi double cash for business). What method do you use to review your purchases, or do you review them at all? My main goal is to catch fraudulent charges. I find it a major nuisance, which I delay, and then have a stack to review, at which point it would probably be too late to appeal any charges. I'm guessing that developing a habit of going to Mint/Credit Karma once a month to review all charges is the best way.

Re: Does a SUV have more utility than a sedan?
Bogleheads! For a while now I am looking to opportunistically replace my current car. The market for SUVs is fairly tight but sedans are attractively priced. Now I am wondering if anyone has substantiated if an SUV really has more utility than a sedan? To me, when I look at the interior space of front seats, head room, back seats, trunk space, fuel consumption etc. this all looks very comparable. So, why are SUVs then all the rage and sedans are not? Heck, you even get decent discounts off MSRP if you buy one. Even at Toyota or Honda. Are SUVs structurally more sound than a sedan? From the NCAP ratings it seems rather not. I must be missing something here. What do y'all think? I can tell you my reasons for it: 1. Putting child in and out. ...

Re: SIL considering a PhD in Engineering, worth it?
My son-in-law has just finished an MS in materials engineering, and he currently works for a company specializing in corrosion control. One of his professors encouraged him to pursue a PhD in Manufacturing Engineering. We have discussed a lot of non-financial issues of such a degree--time commitment, personal fulfillment, interest in the research subject matter his mentoring professor suggests, etc. But what we don't have a good answer to a simple question, will a PhD be worth it financially for him? Will a PhD in manufacturing engineering make financial sense? Do BHers think the degree will open professional opportunities for him? Or, would it make more financial sense to be satisfied with his MS and pursue a P.E.? Having done PhD (cs) I ...

Re: Buying a new car….pay cash?!
I’m in the market to buy a new (Or used) vehicle in the coming months. Primarily the focus is on a small SUV, as we occasionally have snowy winters where I live, but I’d be open to a slightly smaller car that can handle well in the snow, too (I have a job that requires I drive to work, even when snow closes schools and our businesses). Am I correct that end of December is a great time to buy vehicles because of sales quotes that might need to be met at the end of a month, quarter and year? I also read that memorial day weekend is a great time to purchase a vehicle. This is not an urgent need, however, I’ve had this vehicle for a decade, and it’s time to buy one with a few less headaches. I’m open to a new or used vehicle. and I’ve saved en...

Re: New to Costco
I routinely get low prices on costco travel for car rentals. I do not think any other place comes close. That is roughly $50-100 saved per rental. With a handful of vacations each year, we end up saving a bunch.

What kinds of deals do you find? based on price or quality or both? Thanks

Re: New to Costco
I know there are quite a few Costco shoppers here. I just got a new membership and I'm heading there soon. What kinds of deals do you find? based on price or quality or both? Thanks We don't go to Costco very often, but when we do, if there is a product we need, we assume there is value in the price/quality and purchase. We trust Costco. This is not necessarily true. I have found *some items* to be cheaper elsewhere, per unit price. I do price compare since I have more choices. not because I am mcscrooge but I won't necessarily say they are always cheap. When I have to return items, they are second to none -- and therefore for anything of significant value I always try to buy from them. Too bad the citi card is useless now, wrt extending t...

On a Gigabit internet google mesh consistently gives me below 100Mbps no matter where I am in the house.Orange44 wrote: ↑Thu Dec 07, 2023 5:45 am Google Mesh worked for me.

Mesh and WIFI setups are tricky. A gift is tough since there is setup and testing. Good Luck!
I recently upgraded to a costco brand and its much better speed. It was 6E.

Good to know .cyclist wrote: ↑Mon Dec 04, 2023 1:53 pm FYI, many 529 plans are set up for easy gifting. One your child’s parent sets up the account they can share a specific URL (Internet address) that will make it easy for you to send money directly from your bank account to your the 529 account for your grandchild.
We’ve done this for our grandchildren.

Part of the reason I want this done is I don’t think they are the most financially savvy parents. I figure if I give them funds for 529 plan it would push them to contribute *something* periodically. But of course they will control that and what happens to the gift money.

I'd rather not ask anyone for social security number. I like the idea of just mentioning there is a 1K I want to gift into the 529 plan, and that they let me know when they have opened it up.

Re: "Gifting" 529 plan
I would like to "gift" a 529 plan to a my nephew (~1 yr old). The amount is not large ($1K), but I don't want to just gift the parents cash -- I want to open a 529 account in their name. It is my hope that parents in turn take the cue and start contributing to it. How does this mechanically work? I open a new account with my nephew as beneficiaries and then just let the parents know? I imagine the way I want it done giving cash to parents is probably easiest because I can't "transfer" a 529 account I opened to someone else..I am pretty sure someone else has done this here, so advise would be appreciated. You will need his Social Security number to designate him as the beneficiary. Therefore, you will likely need the par...
