Re: Anyone Have A Solo Stove?

Have had a Solo Stove for a couple of years and use it on a wood deck. Got a round fireproof mat for under it but manufacturer says that's not necessary. Also found a mesh pizza pan to put on it to keep the embers down and a solid one to put over it so rain doesn't get in it when we're done but the ...

Re: Should I get Life Alert, or similar?

Haven't thoroughly investigated this but have a house in the country and an apartment in the center of a city. Have an almost 90 year old friend in the country who I'd advised to get an alert device but now think she and me should get Apple watches. She's alone for stretches of time in a remote area...

Re: Cars for kids upon college graduation

We bought low mileage cars as graduation gifts for 2 of the 3. One's 1st post grad job was in a place with no public transportation and one was going to graduate school where a car was handy. The 3rd returned to the city where we lived for her 1st job and used the car the kids had in high school. Pl...

How about a train ride across Canada? Could stop for a couple of days at Lake Louise. Haven't thoroughly researched it but have this in mind for a family trip for our 50th anniversary in a couple of years.

Re: Small Group Tour Operators in Japan & Vietnam/Cambodia

A year ago we took an 11 day tour of Vietnam and Cambodia with Vietnam Unique Tours, dealt with a woman named Sunny, and were very pleased. The cost was about 1/3 of OATS, National Geographic, Back Roads or similar. The tour guides all spoke pretty good English. The other tourists changed many days ...

Opps - just noticed you want the Field so instead of getting off the train at 57th, you'd get off at 11th at Musuem Campus.

Re: Day Trip to Downtown Chicago

If you don't want to drive in you can take the South Shore Line train, mysouthshoreline.com, from Michigan City. Park at the Carroll Avenue station in Michigan City where there is plenty of safe parking. Get off at the 57th street station to visit the museum of Science and Industry. From there to ge...

Re: Cheapest long term car rental or other solution?

Each of the last few summers we've rented a 'golf' car from a used car dealership. It's a great deal. We don't have to license it and our primary auto insurance covers us. These cars have been cars that we wouldn't have taken on long trips but have worked well getting to the golf course and to the t...

Re: Wedding Finances-Today

Our 3 daughters were married in the last 10 years. For each I opened a new checking account, deposited 20K and handed the check book to the daughter. Kept one pad of checks for myself but never used any of them. Fancy weddings are not part of our value system. Education and travel we funded happily....

Re: What is your plan for the last few years of a long life?

Recently read a book that addresses many of the questions on this topic that I recommend - Dementia Reimagined byTia Powell MD. The author had a mother and grandmother who had dementia and so has thoughtfully considered the possibility of dementia in her life. She is a psychiatrist and teaches at a ...

Have handled similar situations by getting up and heading to the ladies, intercepting the waiter and paying the bill - no check is presented and everyone has no choice but to be gracious.

Re: Volunteer suggestions

When my 3 daughters started having children I retired at 64. First grandchild was early and though I was experienced and comfortable around little ones I realized things had changed and that there was a body of knowledge about the early years I didn't have. So I took post partum doula and lactation ...

Re: European Hiking Tours (where they transfer your luggage to the next spot)

A second recommendation for ‘inntravel’. Just returned from our 1st trip with them. We hiked in the Dordogne region of France. It was great! The inns we stayed at were acceptable to wonderful and all the meals very good. Had a little trouble with their directions the first 2 days, put that off to ‘A...

Re: Soon to be dad, how to prepare

Seems most everything is covered here, great advice from what sounds like folks still close to the experience. If your wife is breast feeding, even if she isn't, the bonding and physical closeness of mom and baby can push dad out unintentionally. My husband dealt with this by being the one who gave ...

Re: Teen got into auto accident, fight ticket or pay fine?

Our 3 teen drivers, girls, knew the rules and consequences of traffic tickets. If they got a ticket for something like an improper turn, tail light burned out - something that was wasn’t reckless and dangerous to themselves and others , we’d have a hard talk about it but if it were for speeding or o...

Re: Retirement question about grandchildren

Grandkids are your reward for not killing your teens. Have 3 daughters 35-40 who have given us 6 grans, 1 to 7 years old, hoping for 1 or 2 more. Two daughters and their families live in the city where they were raised and where we live. We also have a lake house 1 1/2 hours away. All 6 parents have...

Have solved a couple of similar problems with 'air duct boosters'. In those situations the registers were on the wall, not on the ceiling so it was just a matter of mounting them over the registers and plugging them in. Amazon has a variety of different types. Just do a search and see a variety of t...

Re: Marvin vs. Andersen Windows: The Eternal Struggle

5 years ago while building a new house I found the National Fenestration Council, http://www.nfrc.org, to be a great source of education in helping me decide on windows. They rate windows. Went with Marvin with Cardinal 360 glass and have been very pleased with them. We have a lakefront location and...
