Are VMFXX and the Settle Fund the same thing?
I just converted everything over to brokerage and am very confused by how the settle fund works. I transferred money into VMFXX but it shows up as a holding. Yet, I have a settlement fund with fees that were refunded to me just after converting. I thought that the settlement fund and VMFXX were the same thing? And if they're not, what is the settlement fund in? And am I earning the same interest rate in both?

US Expat Brokerage Account Question
I'm currently residing overseas and have several VG mutual fund accounts that I would like to convert over to brokerage accounts. I maintain a physical US address (not a PO box) for all my US financial accounts. Will VG have issues with me listing a foreign employer when I fill out the forms to transfer everything over to brokerage? Or have issues with me residing abroad?

The new layout is HORRENDOUS. You used to be able to print out your holdings nicely and neatly. Now, you have to print through the browser, and the formatting is awful. I don't understand why VG continues to take away functionality such as with their disastrous phone app. No one asked for this.

Re: Should I move $10K from VBTLX/VAIPX to I-Bonds?
You would be selling low, that would be one downside. You might have bought high and would sell low. I don't have any issues with cutting losses; but typically you don't want to sell an asset class when it's cheaper and might have higher future returns. In which case you might be chasing prior performance. Do you have new money coming to deploy by 10/31/22 into I-bonds? That might be one other strategy to consider. This article in Morningstar was helpful in comparing long-term returns in fixed income. https://www.morningstar.com/articles/1108848/i-bonds-forever Thanks for the article link and good point. If I sold my VBTLX, it would be at a loss. VAIPX would be about even. I do have some new money coming in, but it's earmarked for somethin...

Should I move $10K from VBTLX/VAIPX to I-Bonds?
I-bonds have never even been on my radar until recently due to the pop in interest that they now pay out. Yes, I understand that the rates change twice a year. However, I'm wondering if it would make sense for me to move $10K into I-bonds for the time being while the interest rate on them is high. To fund it, I would either sell VBTLX or VAIPX, or some of both, which I hold in my taxable account. Would this make sense to do and keep doing until the interest rate comes down? Any reasons not to do it? As additional info, this is money I don't plan on touching for a very long time. My tax bracket is 22%.

Good points. When Vanguard mutual fund positions are held within a Vanguard brokerage account, how are they registered? Are they effectively registered "in street name" (as with individual stocks) or are they registered directly in the name of the client? Regards, 100 They're registered in street name. Vanguard Brokerage Services is the registered owner of the shares. Thank you talzara and others who have posted on this topic. Though I know some will disagree, I'm increasingly convinced that for long-term buy and hold mutual fund investors, brokerage accounts add another layer of unnecessary tail risk. My view is that Vanguard was being disingenuous by calling the brokerage accounts "upgrades" from the older-but-safer m...

Re: VBTLX vs VTEAX for taxable account - low tax bracket
Taxable bonds yield more than muni bonds of comparable risk. My rule of thumb is that the break-even is a 25% tax rate, so that you should prefer munis in a lower bracket. The current yields on Total Bond Market and Tax-Exempt Bond Index are 2.69% and 3.27%, which suggests that investors believe the muni index is riskier, probably because it has somewhat lower-quality bonds. Does the foreign income exclusion actually give you a very low marginal tax rate? My understanding is that you exclude the tax on up to $X of foreign income, but your marginal tax rate above $X is based on your total income. Thus you might well be in the 24% tax bracket even now, which is about the break-even point for munis. (Many investors in the 24% bracket actually...

VBTLX vs VTEAX for taxable account - low tax bracket
I've had VBTLX in my taxable account for years and have never thought to change it until I just read through the "Bogleheads' Guide to the 3-Fund Portfolio". After some further research, it seems like VTEAX may be more appropriate for me. However, I came across some other threads that said VTEAX would only be appropriate if my tax bracket were higher. However, I'm still not clear why that is. Because I an currently overseas and nearly all my income is exempt from US taxation (though I still report it), my tax bracket is 10%. That being the case, would it make sense for me to switch over to VTEAX? And if not, why wouldn't it be? I do plan on moving back to the US within the next 3-5 years, so I expect my tax bracket to go up to 24%...

TIPS as part of fixed income allocation
A while ago I posted a question about including TIPS as part of your fixed income allocation and it seemed like there were differing opinions. I had two questions about TIPS and the Total Bond Index Fund....
1) Historically, how do bonds do during period of inflation?
2) To what extent do you think one should include TIPS as part of your portfolio given the fact that Vanguard includes TIPS in some of their all-in-one retirement funds? Currently, I have my fixed income split 50/50 between a Total Bond Index fund and a TIPS fund, but the TIPS fund has lagged over the past few years.

And in no case can you ever use $10000 in income to permit anymore than $10000 total in retirement account contributions. Re: Have you canceled cable?
I cancelled my cable a few years ago and will never go back. I just use Netflix and iTunes and a couple other sites. There's no need to have cable anymore. I also don't need or want the hundreds of channels that are forced upon you which is my main reason for ditching cable. Cable companies need to be more open to listening to their customers or they will eventually run themselves out of business. The current model they're following is no longer working.
