Re: Christmas Time : How to not appear rude

Apologies if someone else has mentioned it - didn't read every reply yet..... Charity donations are always the best suggestion, but if anyone needs/wants other ideas on how to deflect the holidays, I'd like to suggest going to Francine Jay's 'missminimalist' (-dot-com) site and on the right-hand sid...

Re: Anyone have a cordless electric or robotic lawn mower?

I just this season started using a Ryobi cordless mower. Purchased at hone depot, came with two batteries and a 90-minute recharger. My total lot is approx. one acre, with maybe a 1/3 acre's worth that gets mowed, after allowing for house, trees, and meadow /native plants areas. I can usually cover ...

Re: Ornamental Grasses for Midwest

I'm trying to let my yard go 'native' over time. I've used local nurseries, but I've also ordered from Prairie Moon Nursery.

Nice people, good plants, lots of knowledge. (no affiliation, I just like their stuff)

Re: Wife: Surprise, we now have a cat.

I can't tell you how many times I wished we had cameras set up around our house, to capture kittens carrying on the way they do -- it's absolutely hilarious a lot of the time! And yes -- make sure you pick up the cat's food so the dogs don't get it. A lot of dogs get 'the runs' if they aren't used t...

Re: Want to cut the cable cord

I got the Mohu Leaf antenna from Amazon, and that's proven to be fun for regular over-the-air viewing -- it found several stations for me, and I'm in a remote area.

Re: Do you know of a good specialty travel agent?

Their name might turn you off initially, but I know that Disney is excellent at assisting with special needs travel. Friends of mine took another severely disabled friend (stroke) on their Mediterranean cruise a couple years ago and loved it. Our disabled friend was wheelchair bound, so the friend w...

Re: What's the best dandelion killer?

Dandelions are actually a native plant species, and are an early nectar source for butterflies, etc. Please don't kill them off!

Investigate native plants for your yard - ultimately less work than trying to keep that golf course look, which is anything but natural!

Re: Natural Lawn/Weed care

Investigate going native!! Most people don't realize that native plant species actually lead to a lot less yard work in the long run. Not to mention the fact that native plants support things like bugs and birds (kinda important for a healthy ecosystem). Have been "going native" with my yard for a f...

Re: Navy Federal Credit Union: Would you recommend them?

I've been a member for 15-20 years or so at this point, have used them for my mortgages (purchase, two refi's), and on the whole have always been very happy with them, but a few things that happened recently -- including one "biggie", imo -- has made me think that they've gotten too big, and are dev...

Re: Looking for advice to reduce / avoid "clutter"

I did the spend-money and collecting thing earlier on (but fortunately, finally figured things out!). A couple suggestions from someone who cleared out A LOT of stuff, and still has more to go, but is in a much better situation.... For some reading inspiration, I recommend Miss Minimalist. You can r...

Re: How far did mortgage rates drop below your rate before r

I purchased in 2007 -- $225k, 5% down, no PMI, 6.25%, 30-yr fixed. Refinanced in 2010 to another 30-yr fixed at 4.25%, had been paying ahead, paid down a bit more to satisfy the loan (appraisal came in a bit lower than orig. purchase price). Just refi'd again this past summer - another 30-yr fixed, ...

Re: PenFed vs NFCU

I did my original purchase through NFCU in 2007, and refi'd twice - 2010 and a few months ago. I don't have anything negative to report either. Each time I've found their loan people to be professional and knowledgeable. I was very proactive in making sure they had any information they needed (but d...
