I buy from a family that runs a ranch in our county. The quality, and knowing how it was raised, make it worth it. I would strongly suggest finding a local family in your area and deal with them directly, not just for steaks, but for hamburger, chops, etc.

I had three Hermes typewriters, a 3000, 2000, and a Rocket. Gave the 3000, which I had been given for college in 1965, to my niece who loves it. Bought the other two on eBay. Had them all refurbed at Cambridge Typewriter in Arlington MA, which did an excellent job, cleaning, oiling, correcting a few minor mechanical glitches, and renewing the rubber platens. Nice to have and type the occasional letter. Always gets a nice reception from the folks who receive one.

Go to a local shelter and talk to the manager. They usually know their dogs, and you can get a pooch that’s affable, a little older, already house trained. I’m on the board of our local shelter, and the only thing wrong with the dogs that come to us are their owners.

I would second the advice to have your current cooktop looked at by a good repairman. There is a good chance that the burners simply need a small repair, or maintenance. Gas is good, and I would ignore the recent foolishness in the press. In particular, an appliance from 30 years ago is likely to be better built than the nonsense they pass off as quality today. If it can be fixed go with that.

I have several Swiss Hermes typewriters….a 3000 model I got my first year of university in 1965 and a 2000 plus a Rocket, which I bought off eBay. I had them reconditioned with mechanical adjustments, cleaning and oiling, and a new platen at Cambridge Typewriter in Arlington MA. Fellow did a magnificent job. Gave the 3000 to my niece, and write the occasional letter on one of the others.

Don’t watch any recent cable or network tv. Have watched Shetland on Britbox…recommend the first two seasons only. Rest of it very subpar. Also watched Jonathan Creek from late nineties. Pretty good. All the old Morse series. Lewis got a little woke toward the end, Endeavour more so. It was watchable. Also subscribed to what’s now called Wondrium (the old great courses, what were they thinking?). Their history courses are very good, anything by Philip Daileader on the Middle Ages, and anything at all by Kenneth Harl who is superb.

ESG: This will drive me away from Vanguard
I found this WSJ story hard to believe, but I guess it is so. Vanguard pushing ESG is going to sour me completely on investing there, and I have been there for a long time. An index fund manager is not supposed to engage in politics, and this breaks faith with investors.

Bogleheads never fails to entertain.
I drive a Grand Cherokee because it works for me. It’s extremely comfortable for any medium or long trip, it does not bounce around on ice and snow, and at the same time, I can transport all my stuff in the back, from gardening materials, furniture for camp, to lumber and bags of concrete mix.
The point, if you’ve missed it, and you have, is that being a boglehead is sensibly spending your money on what works for you. Virtue signaling how thrifty you are can be as foolish as being a consumerist spendthrift.

You can make a strong case that this time is different. With the Federal Reserve underpinning just about every financial asset, how it works out is not certain. We’ve never been here before, and what to do is not easily determined. I’m as broadly diversified and conservative as I can fashion, and what happens now is what happens.

Well, I’m 73, and don’t think it’s too late. The most popular current text, I think, is the Greek Intensive Course, by Hardy Hansen. The most current second edition has the appendix rolled in. Don’t buy on Amazon, try biblio.
Large amount of memorization involved in beginning of course, alphabet, accent rules, declinations, etc.
Paul Rahe, an excellent author, has a very good series on Sparta out. Wonderful read.

Yes I cut my own lawn. Could easily afford to have someone else do it, but do it myself because I don’t want someone running over my seedling trees, cutting the bark, etc. I do hire someone to plow my north country driveway, but do my own shoveling at 73. Like to stay busy outdoors.

And to add to the above, if you give money to charity, take the time to make some contacts with local people. Find out who is doing good work. It’s a good thing to actually be a part of the community where you live.

I don’t have a great deal of trust in charities that advertise nationally for money. I give a great deal to three of four local charities where I know the results and the people involved. These include the Salvation Army (great respect for the people who run it), animal shelter (also my time and manage their investments), and libraries. The people running these groups are not woke professionals, they are local people who work hard at doing the right thing for people and animals with troubles.

You may not need much in the way of customer service when you are younger, but as you get older, your outlook changes. We’ve had a number of deaths in my family over the past two years. When my wife died two plus years ago, Vanguard was very good. I had one person to deal with, could always contact by email, prompt replies, etc. They’ve obviously made changes, and cut personnel. Trying lately to deal with account problems with deceased relatives means extremely long wait times, and a LOT of aggravation. This had been both my experience and that of my sister in law. I’ve always recommended vanguard to my friends. I’m rethinking that. Vanguard may be good in the account accumulation stage, but they are pretty threadbare and useless as you age...

I’ve got a landline and get a ton of scam robocalls.
There is no question in my mind that Verizon and other telcos could put an end to this but don’t, for the very reasons illustrated in this thread. People are responding by ditching their landlines, and given the expense of maintaining copper lines, telcos are happy with that. So the scams will keep up.

I manage a small endowment for our animal shelter, with a portfolio of a little over $1 million, with small additions from bequests from time to time. We need to supplement our $100,000 annual income to meet a budget of about $140,000. After being on the board for several years, the members trusted me and we switched from the old Smith Barney and E Jones to Vanguard. One problem I encountered was multiple bequests with different instructions on how the income was to be spent. While I had multiple account numbers, when vanguard switched to its present single brokerage account, I found that the number of different balanced funds at vanguard make it easy. One fund for combined investment with same income only testamentary instructions, and a n...

You may need to think more about the time you’ll have on your hands, than the actual financial issues. You’ve been off to work every day, then suddenly you won’t be. Spend some time thinking about what you’ll want to do. And no, golf and travel won’t be enough. You are still going to have a lot of energy, and will need to find something as a good outlet. Part time consulting, volunteering, hobby, small business. My f-i-l was a dentist, liked to golf, after retirement had a smalll business repairing golf clubs, things of that nature. Tim

There is a cheaper Braun model that doesn’t work as well. This one gives a really good shave without dragging. It also has replaceable lithium batteries, because that’s always been the weak spot of electric shavers for me. Double wides are very common in the country. One was put up next to me, and it certainly doesn’t detract from the value of my stick built home. It has a steeply pitched roof and dormers, in fact. Cheaper built doubles can deteriorate in time, I’ve had tradesmen tell me. Depends on what you pay for. Tim
