Re: Hand raising with impending layoffs

Yes I did so I had a full year of of severance payments and also received my bonus which paid out on the normal date which was 2 months after I left but while i was still receiving the monthly severance checks. So that all worked out great except for the difficulty in finding equivalent work.

Re: Hand raising with impending layoffs

I'll share my experience. My megacorp was going through successive rounds of layoffs and I was asked if I wanted to volunteer since the next round was going to offer half the amount of severance per year. My boss told me I wasn't at risk for layoff. He had always been happy with my performance and s...

Re: Countertop refinishing

Ok, I have a lot of experience with this. I only looked briefly at the web link but I would not apply any acrylic finish to the surface of the counter top. Solid surface acrylic counter top products are very easy to work with, as they are soft and are easily cut with basic woodworking tools. Think r...

Re: Lost my job and looking for advice on next steps

Thanks a lot on the tip for Box 12 DD on W2: Total costs paid by employee and employer paid for employer sponsored health coverage plan. 1.03 factor i assume is inflation. I'm in a similar situation being layed off at age 55. My experience was that the cobra rate did not agree with my box DD. It wa...

Re: Time and Materials Vs. Flat Bid

In my experience, the issue here is risk, and who bears it. If the job is likely to have complications, a fixed bid can end up with higher cost because price is inflated to cover the additional risk. Time and material may lower cost at the end of the day, but you bear more responsibility to track an...

Re: Social Security online calculator - today's vs inflated $

This prior thread sheds some light on this. https://www.bogleheads.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=81833 Seems that the "future $'s" estimate uses the Average Wage index to inflate the benefit. I guess I'm still not comfortable that $2063 future $ estimate in the above example will be close to t...

Social Security online calculator - today's vs inflated $

I'm trying to understand the online calculator results for today's vs inflated $'s. Here's my example Date calculation is run is 6/18/2105 DOB - 11/05/1960 Age stop working 56 and 0 months (which will be 11/2016) After entering an earnings record, the today's $'s benefit amount at age 62 is $1479/mo...

Re: Downside to Roth conversion of aftertax 401k money?

The 70k is the basis, so no gain with that. As I understand it, the rule change allows you to divert all the gains to a traditional IRA so only the aftertax contributions go to the roth. That way you don't have any tax liability for the conversion

Downside to Roth conversion of aftertax 401k money?

I'm trying to identify any pitfalls for my situation associated with 401k roth conversions enabled by the September 2014 IRS tax ruling for aftertax 401k contributions (http://www.bogleheads.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=147196&newpost=2208555). This ruling streamlined the process to convert...

comparing Stable Value to Bond funds

i've read many posts and wiki's on bond funds and the effect of interest rate increases but remained confused. Bogleheads often say that SV is a good choice if you have it in your 401k. Right now, my SV fund pays at about 2%. If I compare this to the SEC yield of Total bond (VBTLX) at 1.96% and aver...

Re: How to plan for early retirement: Healthcare costs

You might want to check some insurance rates at www.healthsherpa.com to get an idea of what coverages/premiums are available in other states and cities. Keep in mind that rates increase with age but you can get estimates on the impact. I'm in the middle of doing the same planning that you are doing....

Re: 54 with potential ER at 55-- Dreaming?

I'm in a similar position to you and working hard to put a plan in place for ER since Megacorp is in a constant state of reorganization which puts my job at significant risk. Given the large number of years until medicare kicks in, I'm concerned about the risk of the pre-65 retiree healthcare being ...

Re: Drop son's car insurance while away at college?

Food for thought at this link...... I'm still digesting all of this relative to the risk of my son not being listed on my policy. He will have no opportunity to drive my car but certainly could be in a position to borrow someone elses. http://www.claimsjournal.com/news/national/2014/06/05/249762.htm...

Re: Drop son's car insurance while away at college?

That is exactly what Allstate suggested (drop him from the policy) , although they did bring up the issue of driving another person's car. As I understand it, if he drove another's car, he would be driving with their permission, so their insurance would provide 1st coverage no matter what the case. ...

Drop son's car insurance while away at college?

Our Son has left for college without the car. Allstate doesn't have a plan for driver's that live more than 100 miles away so the only option they offered was to drop him from the policy and then add him back when he comes home for Christmas break and summer. This would save me $1200/6 months so it ...

Need help with college fund spending plan and allocations

Ok, 1st post to the forum so go easy. I've been reading the forums for a few years and would appreciate some advice from the bogleheads. My son is finishing up his Jr High School year so I'm trying to develop a cash flow plan for the next 5 years to pay for college. I plan to fund about 1/2 of the a...
