Re: Equity inflation protection
I don't see any viable equity alternatives and having a 100% tips portfolio when real rates are minus seems absurd. Do you have any Vanguard alternatives other than value stocks which imo have less chance of doing well in an inflationary period than the sector funds
Anyother retirees wish to chime in. What do others do to protect themselves from inflation. Certainly not bonds in this period.

Re: Equity inflation protection
Will inflation like the 70's ever return? Who knows. That's the whole point of my initial thread. Retirees need prtection from inflation and naturally would like to get a better absolute return than an all tips portfolio in times like we are in and possibly even in a high inflationary period.

Re: Equity inflation protection
In a high inflationary times such as the 70's these sector funds may give you positive absolute returns. Value funds will just lose less than their growth counter parts.

Equity inflation protection
Although the so called Larry Swedroe portfolio consisting of 30% small cap value domestic and international, plus 70% short term bonds and/or tips maybe alright for younger investors with large amounts of assets I maintain that Vanguards sector funds consisting of energy, precious metals, health, reit and possibly int'l reit are better for retirees and near retirees because they afford better inflation protection. A 50% sector and 50% tips or 25/75 may work very well for inflation protection. I also believe that in aggregate they give you decent diversification. Anyone want to hazard a guess how these sectors did in the 70's and early 80's? Does anyone, anyone at all concur with this line of thinking. Comments

Will Vanguards new short term tips fund get the same inflation adjustment as it's current longer term tips fund? If so is the only difference the real rate you get? Is any of this correct? Thanks Tony

Mel, what have you done? Don't you know about supply and demand? Now, with your great article there is going to be a hugh demand for these things. Big demand price goes down, down, down. Silly you say, not with I-bonds. Really? We used to get 3.6% real rate. Now it's 0%. We used to be able to buy 30K of I-bonds and use a credit card with perks. Now it's 10K and no perks. Now what? We pay the Treasury for the privilege? What have you done? Woe is us. Woe, Woe Woe

My fellow Bogleheads, Normally I'm a lurker on this forum, but I felt it my duty to warn forum members about the new book "The Bogleheads guide to retirement planning" . I began reading this book a couple of days ago and didn't even get past the preface before I received a rather nasty and severe paper cut on my thumb. Upon examination with my magnifying glass I saw that it is turning quite red and I'm expecting the "flesh-eating bacteria" to begin there nasty work at anytime. I would appreciate the opinion of "Emerdoc" and/or any of the other fine docs on this forum if amputation is warranted at this time. I beseech all members to please,PLEASE don't let this book fall into the hands of the very young or the el...

I'm retired and decided back in late '07 to cut my equity position in half because I was reading all this stuff about the housing mkt and a looming credit crisis.Being retired I decided the prudent thing to do was scale back and protect what I have, rather than worry about any gains I might miss out on.Now I've started to dca back in. I'm not sure if I'm a market timer, but it's quite evident to me I am a financial genuis. Tony

terrorist
Awhile back I was reading an article about terrorists waiting for an opportunity to strike. The example the writer used was a massive hurricane wiping out the oil rigs and refineries in the gulf. This was the opportunity they were waiting for and they hit the Saudi oil fields. You think, just maybe they are watching what's going on now and figure this is a perfect time to hit us and others around the world, right where it hurts, in our finanicial infrastructure. Bottom line: If a weakened and vulnerable USA is funny to you, then a terrorist strike should make you absolutly ecstatic!! Tony
