Re: Share your net worth progression
Here are the amounts that I recall with a little story for each: Age 22 - $30,000 I graduated university with $30k in savings. I was ahead of most of my peers because my parents paid for my schooling and I did not have to go into debt. After graduating, I spent the next few years working on my business that was already generating a small income of about $1k per month. Age 26 - $100,000 My efforts proved to be valuable and the business saw an uphill trend in profit. I moved out of my parent's home late at age 26 with this amount saved. My mom was going to start charging my brother and I for rent (and rightfully so). We decided it was time to move out and we each got our own apartment. Age 30 - $500,000 Between the ages of 26-30 my business ...

Am I reading this right? [dividend estimates]
The VTI [US] dividend estimate for this quarter was 0.95 but the actual is 0.85920.
The VNQ [REIT] dividend estimate for this quarter was 1.62 but the actual is 1.05310.
Usually the estimates are below the actual values. In the case of VNQ, the estimate was way off. Am I missing something here?

Re: Should you tip when picking up takeout food?
I once tipped one cent because the waiter was rude to me and decided I had one too many "free refills".
When I didn't have stable employment, I wouldn't tip at all for takeout. I felt like I was doing all of the work because I was driving there, walking up the counter etc. The meal was already expensive enough as is.
I always got dirty looks from the person who I was purchasing the food from. If prices were more reasonable, I would have tipped more but I wasn't going to pay more than $20 for a club sandwich.
I am a generous tipper now but not everyone has stable employment and knows when their next contract will be.

Ethical question about PayPal transaction
Hello, In February, I reached out to someone online and offered to buy an item that they they own. It's a collector's item valued at around $300 USD. The seller agreed to sell the item to me. I asked if PayPal was okay for payment and the seller agreed and sent me his PayPal email address. I sent the funds and also included extra so that he wouldn't get charged any fees. I received the item in the mail last month as advertised. Last week, I received an email from PayPal stating that that the funds have been returned to me. The reason is below: This payment was returned for the following reason(s): [redacted] did not sign up for a PayPal account or did not complete the registration process. I have not heard anything from the seller since the...

International stocks will outperform US stocks in 2021
Today is the first trading day of the year.
I have a prediction that the international stock market will outperform the US stock market in 2021.
This thread will be revisited on 12/31/2021 to show the genius that I am.
Keep in mind that I've been correct before and I will be correct again.

Good to know - thanks!AlohaJoe wrote: ↑Wed Nov 04, 2020 6:36 pmYou can look up borrow rates on sites like https://iborrowdesk.com/report/VNQ. But none of the thing you own are going to make any money. Holding "largest trading volume" ETFs is bad when it comes to lending. It means there are millions of other people also willing to lend them out -- not to mention iShares, State Street, and other providers who offer identical ETFs -- which drives down the price and the chance that your shares get borrowed.InvestorNewb wrote: ↑Wed Nov 04, 2020 9:14 am I am long on the ETFs in my signature. Interactive Brokers Stock Yield Investment Program
Is anyone using Interactive Brokers' Stock Yield Investment Program to earn extra income? https://www.interactivebrokers.com/en/index.php?f=46942 Example: XYZ is currently trading at USD 75.00/share. You are long 5,000 shares of XYZ, with a market value of USD 375,000.00. XYZ is in demand and commands a loan interest rate of 9%. You sign up for IBKR's Stock Yield Enhancement Program and IBKR loans out your 5,000 shares of XYZ at 9%. IBKR will pay interest on your cash collateral of USD 375,000.00 x 4.5% = USD 16,875.00. You could earn USD 16,875.00/year on stock you already own. How risky do you think this is? I read the "Considerations and Risks" section but didn't really get a full understanding of the risk involved. Thanks

Vaccine impact on market [prediction]
We will eventually reach a point where a vaccine is announced for covid-19 and it will be publicly available.
What are people's predictions for how the market will react to such a reality? What kind of gains might we expect? It will be interesting to look back at this thread and see who was right in terms of their prediction.
I'm guessing the market will jump between 7 to 10%.

I regret VXUS too. All new money (except dividends) will be directed to other investments. This is the second thread this week. People need protection from themselves from selling low and buying high or just giving up on it. Giving into emotions and bad investing behavior is a mistake. What a joke. I haven't sold any of my existing shares but the returns have been terrible. I can't wait a few lifetimes for the fund to generate a decent return. What if in a year it starts to out perform? You'll start buying high? I'll just keep reinvesting the dividends back into VXUS. It makes up about 23% of my portfolio but I'm not comfortable putting new money into it given the poor return and risk rating. My guess is that when VXUS does well, VT...

Quiet treadmill for apartment
Hello,
Does anyone recommend a quiet treadmill for an apartment or condo? Does such a treadmill exist?
I have people that live beside and below me, so I'm looking for something that won't disturb other tenants in the building. I would also prefer one that folds due to limited space.
Now that it's getting colder, I feel less inclined to run outside and want to stay in shape throughout fall/winter.
Thanks

I have about the same as you but I am one person. It doesn't seem like enough for four people in my opinion.
You say that you enjoy the simple things in life but what if your children have different ideas when they get older? Family trips are nice and surely you will want to splurge on your kids at some point, pay for their hobbies, schooling, etc. Maybe your parents will also need financial assistance as they get older.
45k/year is basically poverty for four people.

I'm down about 300k from the highs and feeling pretty foolish for being greedy and not selling when things were good. I had plenty of opportunities to do so.
I recently read an article on CBC that said "about 80 per cent of people will not get really sick from this" so I'm trying to understand why the sell off is so drastic.
Suppose coronavirus infects 10x the number of people that it already has, which some health experts expect will happen, how much could we theoretically lose?
