I don't have diabetes, so get your doctor to approve any idea I give you before you implement it. That said, I've had good results from eating a paleo diet, also eliminating all wheat based food items and intermittently fasting two days per week. I eat dinner on Sunday and then don't eat again until dinner on Monday. I eat dinner on Wednesday and then don't eat again until dinner on Thursday. I also consume a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar diluted in a large tumbler of water every morning. It seems to be working for me, whether it would be a good choice for you is something you and your doctor would need to decide. Re: Hurricane Hermine

Good post for those who are not used to storms. I grew up with Hurricanes and tropical storms (live on the gulf coast) and in fact we survived Katrina. Our house took on 28 feet of water in that one and we lost nearly everything. Regardless of what the media says, the MS Gulf Coast got it much worse than New Orleans. If it's a cat 3 or higher, I'd always evacuate. If it's a low end hurricane and/or tropical storm, I'd probably stay and ride it out. We keep plenty of gas on hand this time of year for our generator which is setup to reverse feed back into the house and keep lights on and the fridge/freezer going. Definitely stock up on charcoal/gas for grilling (and boiling water). Other "seasoned storm survivor" tips are: Fill up ...

I am no longer amazed at how accurate hurricane predictions are. I watched the track predictions all week. Earlier in the week, the storm was projected to come ashore in the Mississippi delta. Later in the week it was predicted to come ashore just north of Tampa, cut diagonally across the state and exit near St. Augustine. The predictions were all over the map, literally. I suppose if one cherry picks the data/timeframe, one could say the predictions were "essentially spot on," but as an observer/user of track prediction data, I'd...

I doubt it. Most fail to prepare. There have been too many times folks were told to get ready and then the storm missed them entirely. I don't blame the government for that, prediction of storm tracks is not a precise science and prediction of storm intensity is even less precise.

Yes, but inland, so we usually miss the worst of it. Still, 2005 was a bad year for storms and we got hit pretty heavily. In retrospect I'd say getting out of the way is your best bet if you can do it safely. If not, prepare thoroughly, if you don't do it in advance, it will be too late

This is an updated copy of a post I made several years ago, so it may not be entirely applicable, but you may still find it helpful. Some of you may not have had the experience of living through a major storm. I have been through a couple, although I'm pretty far inland and so didn't get the full brunt of it. But I think I can perhaps give you a few thoughts which might make living through the experience a little less stressful. At this time it appears the storm is going to go right up the East coast and affect up to 25 million persons. First, if you are anywhere near the coast or in a flood-prone area or in the direct path of the storm, it would be a good idea to head inland and to higher ground well in advance of the storm. I dip it into super-hot BBQ sauce and have it with a side of mashed potatoes. It's tasty. 1. What kind of BBQ sauce do you use? I am always searching for better BBQ sauce 2. Plain mashed potatoes? or with gravy? Mashed potatoes & good gravy -- can't be beat. I am starting to salivate as I write this. We buy the 2 pack of chickens from costco & cook on a charcoal BBQ. There is something about the precooked chicken we didn't care for, but it has been years since we bought them so I don't recall exactly what it was that we didn't like. I am certain the raw chicken is more expensive than the cooked ones, and mine take way more time. So here's a recipe for you. First, spatchcock (butterfly) the chicken. Re: Peeling small carrots

You might try laying them on a cutting board (or terrycloth towel if they are too slippery), holding one end, peeling the other, then flipping them over to peel the end you first held. There are two types of peelers, you'd probably get better results using the type in which the peeler blade runs at a right angle to the handle instead of the kind in which the blade is inline with the handle. The first type would be much easier to use for a small item laid on a cutting board or towel. Save the peelings to make vegetable stock. You can freeze them for that purpose until you get enough peelings/trimmings to make your stock.

I went to the range today and put 100 rounds through the LCP, 50 rounds of Precision One 90 gr. JHPs and 50 rounds of Winchester 95 gr. FMJ. Again, no FTFs, FTEs or ignition problems. Also, I'm finding the pistol to be quite accurate at normal defensive ranges, inside of 25 feet. I'm switching over to the Precision One JHPs for my carry round now that I've verified their reliability. In total, I've now put 150 rounds through the pistol with no issues. I like it.

There were issues with the CXP-1, the CXP-2 is a much better gun. This pistol is not designed for +P rounds, the OP didn't say he was shooting SP or +P but if it was +P I doubt he'd admit he made a near fatal mistake. It is an interesting discussion and I have read tons of these Ford vs Chevy or Sig vs S&W, 9 mm vs 45 ACP, we all have and people have opinions so they will disagree. I have read many very positive reviews from publications on the CXP-2, I don't have one but as I mentioned my friend does and he really thinks it is well made for the money. Is it a Dan Wesson? No, it is an inexpensive pocket pistol. I wouldn't use it at the range and expect to run 5k or 10k rounds through it but once you've shot it 200 times with range ammo...

Re: Good Deal on a Pocket Pistol

Zaplunken- I think in .380 pocket pistols, ammunition choice is critical. Pick the wrong ammo and the result will be an under-penetrating round (many JHPs) or an over-penetrating round (all FMJs and JHPs which fail to expand). There are a few rounds which met the FBI criteria for penetration both in bare gelatin and through 4 layers of heavy denim. Precision One and Fiocchi Extrema 90 grain rounds utilizing the Hornady FTX bullet both passed the test. Federal .380 Hydra Shoks also did well. Test results can be found here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GNtPHYwcDts Unlike 9mm, .40 or.45, there are very few acceptable rounds, but there are some. As to the SCCY pistol, before buying one, anyone contemplating the purchase should review these p...

Re: Good Deal on a Pocket Pistol

So I took the LCP to the range and shot a box of ammo through it. I was pleasantly surprised, recoil is pretty mild and the pistol is quite controllable. Accuracy is so-so thus far. But I'm not really accustomed to the pistol, and it is not broken in. I shot 50 rounds of 95 gr. Winchester white box fmj . No FTFs or FTEs. No duds. My hand did not feel bad after shooting a box, so I'm inclined to make no changes at this point. Overall, I like it a lot. Much less recoil than shooting my Ruger LCR with 125 gr. .38 Special +Ps, as might be expected.

Re: Can this roast beef be saved?

You might try wrapping it tightly in aluminum foil with about a cup of beef broth. Put it in a large roaster and roast at 275F until the meat reaches an internal temperature of 205F. If it is ever going to get tender, that should do it. You have to convert the collagen to get it tender, and that usually doesn't happen until the internal temperature gets over 195F. But you don't want to get the internal temp over 212F because you'd just be drying it out at that point.
Good luck!

That's an excellent price based on how much I paid for an LCP several years ago. I added a laser, as they are very difficult to aim, and replaced the spring with a 13#, as I recall. I couldn't tell much difference with the new spring but didn't compare on the same day. It's hard on the hand, that's for sure, but a good concealed carry pistol.

I agree that a 9mm loaded with the right ammo is undoubtedly a more effective stopper than a .380 What do you recommend as a reliable self defense ammo for a 9mm? So, I picked up the LCP Custom from my local pawn shop/FFL holder this morning. My first impression is that exterior fit and finish seem to be quite good, especially for a pistol at this price point. The pistol came to me somewhat dirty, but even dirty the operation of the slide was pretty smooth. I'll clean it tonight and when I do so, I'll have a better idea of how well it is machined. I'm looking forward to trying it out next weekend.

Re: Good Deal on a Pocket Pistol

Below are some links on defensive ammo choice for the .380 pistol. In selecting ammo for your pistol, you should look for test results which used a barrel length the same as your pistol's barrel length. One might think that if a particular jhp worked well in a 2.75" barrel, well it ought to be just fine in a 3.25" barrel, after all it should have more muzzle velocity. But that's not always the case. It's somewhat counterintuitive, but more muzzle velocity may result in more expansion of the bullet and more expansion may result in less penetration. So, its a tradeoff the bullet manufacturers make when they design their rounds and you have to take it into account when you select your ammo. One final point, ammo selection is a "...

I carried and used both Ruger LCP and the M&P BG380 S&W. All the 9mm weapons currently available, are for me too heavy and difficult to carry concealed. Someone over 6 foot and 200lbs may be able to better manage carrying a pocket sized 9mm. The S&W BG380 is the .380 I prefer and what I carry when I CC. It is very reliable in practice, and accurate in my hands at under 10 yards. I had issues with three different LCP's as they aged, problems generally showed up in the 1-5k round range. In my view the LCP may be built a little too light internally to be used in regular practice sessions. Some folks also like the Sig Sauer 380s. I agree that a 9mm loaded with the right ammo is undoubtedly a more effective stopper than a .380 What do you recommend as a reliable self defense ammo for a 9mm? What pistol are you shooting and what is the barrel length? I shoot a compact, an FNH FNS 9C, which has a barrel length of 3.6" and standard rifling. At that barrel length, I used this series of videos: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLgNSGOEQko_M90AMdRCDMgd-w4Yozc27i to screen through the myriad of available choices and I settled on this one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K3VfWkWMzOI&list=PLgNSGOEQko_M90AMdRCDMgd-w4Yozc27i&index=11 the Federal 147 grain std. pressure HST, which I think is a pretty good round for me. But your pistol may have a longer or shor...

Re: Good Deal on a Pocket Pistol

The LCP is a marvelously small and light pocket pistol. Wolff makes a set of heavier slide springs - install the heaviest one (13 pounds I think?) and it takes a lot of snap out of shooting it. The Crimson Trace laser made for it is very user friendly and excellent for a point-shooting gun like this. Sights will not be used on a gun like this if it ever is needed. With good ammo the gun is very reliable - I use Speer Gold Dot ammo. All for a very decent price. I ordered the 13# spring from Wolff gunsprings this morning. Cost was about $13, including shipping by 1st class mail. I used to own a Browning BDA .380 which is a much heavier gun and I found it to be rather snappy, more so than my 9mm, so maybe that is coloring my perception of the...

I hate the very tough trigger, the long pull, and the long reset. This is not a good gun for me. I much prefer the glock 43 or the M&P shield.
You might like the LCP9s. Here's a review:

Re: Good Deal on a Pocket Pistol

I own several Ruger LCP pistols (it's a long story...). Very reliable, very practical for the pistol's intended purpose; easily concealed personal protection. This pistol is practical and task related. I suggest you consider purchasing a pocket holster as that is the most practical way to carry this sidearm, it being too small for belt wear (in my opinion-- might as well carry a full 9mm if you wish to carry this sidearm in a belt holster). The price stated by the OP is very good indeed (I paid lots more for each of my three LCP pistols!). I use Hornady FTX rounds in my pistols (well, my wife carries one of them...). Found the rounds to be reliable and accurate. For the record, when I was assigned to the NYPD Firearms & Tactics Unit I ...

Re: Good Deal on a Pocket Pistol

I saw this: http://www.kygunco.com/Product/View?ItemNo=95665#.V2wz6vkrKUk which is a pretty good deal on a Ruger .380 LCP Custom. $226.59 with free shipping, so I thought I'd bring it to your attention. Thanks. I'm not so familiar with it. Given that toddlers are involved in pulling the trigger in accidents about once a week, I'm curious if this is a model that's easier or more difficult for them to do that. It's a legitimate question because if others have trouble keeping their gun aways from youngsters, I wonder how I'd do. I don't know the answer to your question. I have no children in my house. I'd suggest you contact the NRA and get some training. If that doesn't help you to adequately address your concerns, perhaps firearms ownership...

I've been doing some reading in the elsie pea forum and there is a long thread on changing out the springs. It's on my "to do" list if I think the pistol has too much recoil. I appreciate your opinion as to the degree of recoil reduction which can be expected. I did buy a s...

westcoast wrote:You may want to look at a Kahr 380, a little more expensive very solid dependable weapon with the right ammunition. It's a very good pocket gun for up close encounters.
The Kahrs are nice pistols. There's two models (and some variations), the high end P380 and the more utilitarian C380. The C380 is about $100 more than the LCP and the P380 is about $300 more. The differences (with the exception of sights) between the C380 and P380 appear to be mostly cosmetic. I'd expect them to perform pretty much the same at defensive pistol ranges. I already bought the LCP Custom, so I'm not currently in the market, but if I was, I'd certainly consider both of the Kahr pistols for a pocket pistol.

The Glock 43 appears to be a very nice pistol, although somewhat larger than the LCP. Review here:

I agree that a 9mm loaded with the right ammo is undoubtedly a more effective stopper than a .380, and my winter carry pistol is an fns 9c, which I like a lot. But sometimes it's impossible to effectively conceal the 9mm, so for those days, the LCP is about as small as it gets in a reasonably effective caliber, and is very concealable. As between the Ruger LC9 and LC9s, i'd probably almost always opt for the LC9s just based on its better trigger. YMMV.

which is a pretty good deal on a Ruger .380 LCP Custom. $226.59 with free shipping, so I thought I'd bring it to your attention. Of course, it has to go to an FFL holder (unless you live in Kentucky and can drive to the store), but that's usually not too expensive if you shop around.

Free CAD program with good documentation

I'm looking for a good free 3-D CAD program which is well documented. There's no shortage of free programs, I can find plenty of lists of programs, but when I look at the programs, the documentation for many appears to be rudimentary at best. I'm not an experienced CAD user and I don't want to have to send a lot of time experimenting with the program, which detracts from my already scarce design time. I just want to get my design done so I can go make a part. Speaking of which, any well documented free 3-D CAM programs out there?
Thanks for any help.

I think you might be mistaken. Obesity is a huge problem in America, and is becoming one in many other parts of the world. You might find there is much interest in learning how you managed to drop 227 pounds, and keep it off. I'd say go for it.
BTW, Congratulations! That was quite an accomplishment!
