Re: Millionaire Next Door (Thank you Bogleheads)

Congratulations! It is a wonderful feeling to see two commas in your investment account. I'm 53 now and hoping we can double it before I retire in seven years. Our secret was living below our means and investing at least 50% of every raise I received over a 20 year period. We started out small, $200...

Re: Purchase farmland or sell it?

Here is an update to my post back in March. We decided to buy out my wife's aunt share of the land that is next to our house, approximately 77 acres. The aunt is keeping the other piece of farm land (22 acres) her family. We will continue to rent the land for the rental income. This way no one can b...

Re: Purchase farmland or sell it?

A few questions and comments: 1. Is the $16,000 the entire income, or just your half? (It is the entire income of that property) 2. How many acres? (77 acres, 66 tillable) 3. Which state? Is this a major agriculture area? (central Illinois) 4. How close are you to a major metropolitan area? Is subd...

Re: Purchase farmland or sell it?

My wife and I don't have any emotional attachment to the farmland. We purchased the house and land that she grew up in from her parents 18 years ago, so we already own the property that she has an emotional attachment too. Actually, the property (5 acres, house and some buildings) have been in her f...

Purchase farmland or sell it?

My wife and one other relative have inherited some farmland. We need some help determining if we should buy out the other person's share of the farmland or just sell it and split the money. Wife is 45, I'm 50. We have three children to put through college (Junior in HS, 8th grade, and 6th grade). I ...

Re: For those of you who have kept your cars for a long time

I'm still driving a 1993 Honda Accord (manual transmission) with 277,000+ miles. It turns 20 years old in August of this year. This was our first new car purchased by my wife and I, so it is kind of special to us. I think the original clutch will have to be replaced sometime this year, but it still ...

Re: Help with Retirement Options & Contributions

Thanks, YDNAL.

I like your idea of reducing the number of funds I'm using with my state retirement, 403b, 457b and Roth IRAs. I will be implementing your ideas and suggestions over the next few months.

Thank you!

Re: Help with Retirement Options & Contributions

That being said you have three children and need to enjoy them. You don't get these years back. It isn't all about money. For me family vacations were a special time that really bonded our family. My adult children are very close to us and always remark how much they enjoyed their childhood and tho...

Re: Help with Retirement Options & Contributions

Be ruthless about getting out of any fund with an expense ratio above 0.5%. With as many choices as you have you can find lower cost alternatives with about the same investments. In addition to the expense ratio the actively managed funds will have other hidden costs like trading costs. Also look h...
