ROTH IRA QUESTION

Quick question. If I become a U.S. contractor or DOD civilian working overseas, can I contribute any money earned to a Roth IRA? Right now, I'm in the USAF and I invested some money I earned overseas into a ROTH, however, I had earned over 5k stateside before I deployed. Thanks for answering in adva...

Re: 23 yr old newbie - need advice

First off, thanks for the reply. I'll definitely check out that book you recommended. I plan on reading and researching a lot more in the next few weeks. I am deployed right now, but I'll be headed home in less than a week. I like the 5% "play money" idea. As far as the other 95% in a sensible, lon...

23 yr old newbie - need advice

Hey everyone, I am 23 years old and an E-4 in the USAF. Just last month, I made my first Roth IRA investment (almost with Edward Jones! but caught myself and went with Vanguard). I maxed my contribution with the allowable 5K. I placed 2K in Matthews Asia Dividend Investor (MAPIX) and 3K in Vanguard ...

Where's the "Total" in the Total Stock Market Fund?

Hi everyone,

I came across this article and would like to hear your thoughts on it. It's a pretty old article but I thought there were some good points made (at least from a newb's point of view).

Re: Edward Jones or fee-based advisor?

Run away like I did. Luckily, I departed before I made my initial contribution. My EJ advisor suggested a fund called the Franklin Templeton Rising Dividends Fund. After doing my research, I learned this fund had a 5.75% front load and a .99 expense ratio. The track record isn't bad and it does offe...

Re: Dollar Cost Averaging vs. Lump Sum Investing

Before the firestorm starts: Invest the money as soon as you can afford to do so (i.e. without jeopardizing your financial well being). If you have the money now, invest it now. If the money is coming in periodically, invest it periodically as it comes in. The money does come in periodically, howev...

Re: Dollar Cost Averaging vs. Lump Sum Investing

I like to make the Roth contributions a one-shot deal in January as well. Reason being I save the 5k throughout the year, invest it into the IRA in January, and begin saving again for the following year. I don't look at this as lump sum investing since you can only contribute 5k/annually. I'd never...

Dollar Cost Averaging vs. Lump Sum Investing

Hello all, This may have come up as a topic before so I apologize if I've missed it. I wanted to hear everyone's opinion on Dollar Cost Averaging vs. Lump Sum Investing. I made my first Roth IRA contribution earlier this month, but my plan is to lump in another 5K once January comes around and so on...

Is Quiken safe? I don't know exactly how it works but I heard about programs like this such as mint. Are these programs safe? Having all your financial info in one place sounds amazing but I'm skeptical.

Re: Where should I transfer my USAA Roth IRA?

Since you are young, in my opinion, I think you should aim very agressive but it all depends on your comfort level I guess. I agree with one of the top posts with the starter fund considering you don't appear to have enough to get into many things yet. I will say that, lucky for retirement accounts,...

Re: 22 Year Old: First Time Investor Needing Help

First off, good job on starting early and awesome that you have no debt! Anyway, do you really need $35K for your emergency fund? 3-6 months expenses is what is recommended for an emergency fund, however, it's all really upto you what makes you comfortable. If I were you, I would definitely get that...

Beware HYIP's

Hello all, There is someone I know that has been advertising these High Yield Investment Programs on his Facebook, and I'm not very happy about it. Aren't these all typically Ponzi/Pyramid schemes? That's illegal right? How would I go about stopping this? and how have they not been stopped already???

investing in commodities

How does everyone feel about investing in commodities? I believe with population growth, I think investing in certain commodities could really pay off long term. Where are we at now? 7 billion? Down the line, I can't imagine there being enough to go around. Kind of scary...

Re: Question regarding closure of brokerage account

I have a hunch that they might waive the fee if you never put any money in. I hope you're right though I don't think the advisor will be too happy when I tell him I've changed my mind and want to close the account. He will be thinking "dang he was too smart for me to fleece." I an not an expert but...

I'd like to get into the T. Rowe Health Science Fund I can't address your question but I am curious to know why that fund is appealing to you. I am considering a similar move into a Medical Devices fund for my IRA. Have you looked at it's specs? http://quote.morningstar.com/fund/f.aspx?t=prhsx Its'...

Will the Affordable Care Act hurt/benefit health stocks? Opinions? I'm about to make my first Roth IRA contributions and I'd like to get into the T. Rowe Health Science Fund. Question regarding closure of brokerage account

Hi all, I'm 23 yrs old and new to investing. After talking to a friend, I became very interested in becoming an investor. He had told me had an account with Edward Jones. I quickly got on the ball and called his financial advisor and opened up an IRA with EJ. Speaking with his advisor, he recommened...
