Re: Retirees who never made it to $1 million
I for one am a retiree (12 years) who never had a million bucks...I'm happy, healthy, and am enjoying my life. Like tennisplyr, I retired 8 years ago at less than a million in savings and net worth. We've maintained our lifestyle, adding savings on Social Security and no other pensions. After living below our means, time in the market has been the next most important factor. Our net worth reached $1 million this year, and our portfolio may exceed $1 million in another 5 years. One couple's snapshot: Employment: 41 years, mostly single earner. Retired at 64-1/2 years. Is iteration an option on your spreadsheet? On Excel for Mac the setting Preferences > Calculation > Use iterative calculation will automatically (or manually) recalculate to a solution, or the limits of maximum times or difference. Depending on your formulas, initial entries, and limits the numbers either converge towards a solution or diverge to infinity.

Everything takes 2 business days for a transaction to complete, whether you're selling, buying, or even just exchanging within Vanguard accounts. One business day to post the withdrawal, and one business day to post the deposit. A Vanguard fund sale to your checking account would post at Vanguard the next business day after the sale, and at your checking the 2nd business day.
You add your bank information at My Accounts > Profile and account settings > Bank information, and select the source or destination bank account on the Transaction form. You can enter the bank account(s) in advance.

You want to group similar assets together - and TIPS do not act like nominal bonds. I mean that I have seen arguments that dividend paying stocks can be used as a bond substitute? Where does one draw the line?

Like many I've wondered whether to change my fixed income fund from VG Total Bond to something less volatile. Take less risk without sacrificing too much return.
Over 10 years the Short-Term Inflation Protected Securities has the shape I'd like, but lower returns than the others. That Intermediate-Term Corporate Bond ($50k minimum) has the highest returns, but is it behaving too much like a stock?
Maybe not. Maybe I'll just wait and see.

Re: Life Insurance for Estate Planning Purposes
The White Coat Investor is a reliable source on insurance: What's the Deal with Life Insurance and Estate Planning? Life insurance proceeds are not subject to income taxes. If you leave $1 million in life insurance proceeds to your wife, your kids, or your dog upon your death, none of them are going to pay a cent of that in income taxes. Thus, life insurance, even a permanent life insurance policy such as whole life, can sometimes be a good estate planning (but almost never a good investment planning ) tool. The proceeds can be used to pay estate taxes or provide liquidity for a family-owned business or farm that is difficult to sell. However, if the deceased/the estate is the owner of the insurance policy, the proceeds are still subject t...

I finally read MITRE's whitewash of the Free File Alliance. Its main point is that the IRS is only responsible for reducing the costs of e-filing to the IRS . If the commercial companies use it to drive "additional business opportunities," then that is the price we have to pay to reduce IRS processing expenses. After all, the practices "that critics have called deceptive are indeed common, legal business practices." The report uses endnote 24 to support its claim that Free File saved the IRS from the "prohibitive" costs of developing its own e-filing software. Endnote 24 is another MITRE report that estimates the costs of Free IRS Tax Preparation Software at: $136 million one-time plus $50 million per year for...

My only experience with 1099-G forms is for state income tax refunds, but this IRS page says you need a corrected 1099-G:
If payments made due to identity theft are mistakenly reported on Form 1099-G in the name of an identity theft victim, a corrected Form 1099-G reporting $0 should be issued to the identity theft victim and filed with the IRS as soon as possible after the error is discovered.

Re: Vanguard Customer Service: How to Proactively Avoid a Problem
In all situations involving transfers of assets, always contact and work with the firm receiving the assets, never the firm sending them. The firm that is receiving them is the one that has the motivation to work hard, follow up, double check, etc. This sounds reasonable in theory, but did not help my rollover of a Great-West (now Empower) 401(k) to a Vanguard IRA. At Vanguard's direction I sent completed Great-West withdrawal and Vanguard deposit forms to Vanguard, and started watching the transfer progress on Vanguard's website. After several days my human resources department told me that Great-West needed a withdrawal form. (This confirmed my suspicion that my employer was Great-West's customer, and not me.) I put it in a "miscellaneous financial" line item of my expense budget, along with the occasional fee and safe deposit rental. It's a correction to your actual spending, and not income.
I don't assign it against any particular expense, although I might be tempted for a large one. And I don't prorate it over all expenses, because you've got to draw the line somewhere.

I turn 70 on Nov 9 this year. I am currently getting spousal benefits. Looks like I can file for full benefits after August 1st, 4 months before by first monthly payment in December. Is that correct? I plan to file online. Don't want to go to an office during the pandemic. I previously filed online for spousal benefits. I was wondering if anyone has some tips on the process. You can file online now for your retirement benefit with a "start" month of November, because that's how Social Security defines start and counts the four months in advance. If you look at the online retirement form , you'll see that the latest "start date" available is now November 2020 (for first payment in December): " When to Start Retireme...

Not dead, or even forgotten: "In Praise of the Dead (Investors) Google "Fidelity dead investors" and you'll see a number of stories come up. The Conservative Income Investor informs that when conducting an internal performance review of customer performance from 2003 to 2013, Fidelity learned that those with the best returns were "either dead or inactive." The largest categories for stockholders are age 40 to 60, net worth < $1 million, no employer stocks, and portfolio < 25% individual stocks. For a simple random sample from a large population, the maximum margin of error for a confidence level of 95% and a sample size n of 402 is approximated as 0.98/n^0.5 = 4.9%. This is true for any population size, and increasing the sample size would reduce that error from the maximum. A simple random sample is a sample of the population in which each member has an equal probability of being chosen. I would say, if you sell it, you don't own it.a5ehren wrote:I hold company stock for about 10 minutes twice a year from ESPP. Company has returned a total of 4% over the last 5 years while being pretty volatile, so there's no reason to hold it in a decent portfolio.
Worst case scenario (after discount and tax) is ~10% return over 6 months, but it is usually more like 15-18%. Usually take the cash and sock it in the savings account to go towards large capital purchases like a new kitchen, car, etc.

I'm not sure what you mean. The "Yes by Age" section in Code shows the responses and % for individual stock owners by age group. Could you be more specific?MichaelRpdx wrote:Could you list out the stock ownership stats for each age bracket please?

Re: 401k Choices
I was going to compare Vanguard Target to Blackrock Lifepath on a growth chart, but decided I didn't want to assume years and tickers. You'll get better responses if you can provide the information in Asking Portfolio Questions, especially the fund tickers. Just edit your original post.rzk96 wrote:. . . I got a notification recently that my 401k was changing to Blackrock Lifepath Index. It was Vanguard Target Fund. Now I'm unsure if this is an ok 401k choice? See below for choices. Expense Ratios included. And even if I should stick to my Blackrock Lifepath choice... do I need any actual Total Bonds purchase to my taxable? I am 27 . . .

Re: Vanguard risk tolerance survey blunder.
Your example is flawed. I already know I can skydive much better than walk a tightrope or fly a motorcycle.nisiprius wrote:. . . I mean, seriously. One of these questionnaires could include a question, "Which of these would you like to do on your next vacation?
a) "Skydive."
b) "Walk a tightrope across Niagara Falls."
c) "Try to jump Snake River Canyon in a replica of Evel Knievel's SkyCycle K-2."
I'll bet most people would pick "b."
