Re: Is a $100 drip coffee machine significantly better than a <$50?

I'm a big fan of America's Test Kitchen and after their review of coffee makers, we bought the Bonita 8 cup coffee maker which was their best buy runner up and have loved it. The technivorm mochamaster mentioned above was their top winner. You should watch the video as it is very informative about what makes a good coffee maker. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gggDqQ5yh6o We've had the Bonivita (BV1900TS), second choice in the video, for about a year and we're very happy with it. It replaced another SCAA certified brewer (Newco OCS-8) that broke... I think the Newco made slightly better coffee, however the Bonavita is definitely more durable. I also agree that the freshness of the coffee, and the quality of the grinder is very important as...

I use Hangouts and GV on my iPhone and it works well. Our son has a OBi202 I believe, and he bought a phone number (one time fee of $50, Canada) from freephoneline.ca. He also has GV installed on the Obi, however being in Canada, he cannot get a local GV number (so he can call out on GV, but can't receive calls to a GV number).

He has been using the OBi for a couple of years with no issues at all. BTW the main reason he got the VOIP line is b/c door access to his apartment building is phone based. He could use his cell number, however having a room mate and only one cell phone door access number could be a problem. The VOIP solution works fine.

Science or what? Isn't the author using scientific methodologies? Someone must think so b/c he won the Nobel prize for "Economic Sciences" in 1990 (option pricing). On a topic we all hold dear to our hearts. Is this science or what? "The best way to measure a manager's performance is to compare his or her return with that of a comparable passive alternative. The latter -- often termed a "benchmark" or "normal portfolio" -- should be a feasible alternative identified in advance of the period over which performance is measured. Only when this type of measurement is in place can an active manager (or one who hires active managers) know whether he or she is in the minority of those who have beaten viable passi...

"A better strategy is to learn from history, so you don't repeat the mistakes past generations made. Scientific investing, at its best, is about engaging the data honestly, with the intention of learning something new, hopefully something discordant with previously held beliefs. Science as it's currently practiced has plenty of flaws, but it's still the most reliable method of acquiring the truth that I know of."

I frame the question this way. If one has a properly developed and populated investment plan, an IPS, based on Larry's matrix of 'need, ability, and willingness to take risk,' which of these two links is most likely to derail you from this well thought out plan? IMO Faber wins that test hands down, and therefore he wins the financial porn crown.

For those of you who have read Dan Ariely, I'd suggest Faber puts investors in a "hot state" and behavioural science has produced some very interesting experiments on decision making skills when one is in this state.

Jack Bogle's quote on this: "John Bogle, writing on the website IndexUniverse.com, writes the following: “An investment of $10,000 in the S&P 500 Index at its 1926 inception with all dividends reinvested would by the end of September 2007 have grown to approximately $33,100,000 (10.4% compounded). [Using the S&P 90 Stock Index before the 1957 debut of the S&P 500.] If dividends had not been reinvested, the value of that investment would have been just over $1,200,000 (6.1% compounded) – an amazing gap of $32 million. Over the past 81 years, then, reinvested dividend income accounted for approximately 95% of the compound long-term return earned by the companies in the S&P 500.” In other words, the reinvestment of dividen...

Fixing the Shiller CAPE Ratio

Interesting perspective IMO

"For most of history, the Shiller Cyclically-Adjusted Price-Earnings ratio (CAPE) oscillated in a pseudo sine wave around a long-term (130 year) average of 15.30. It spent 55% percent of the time above the average, and 45% of the time below–a reasonable result for a metric that allegedly mean reverts. Since 1990, however, the metric has only spent 2% of the time below its historical average–98% of the time above."

Just because many people make irrational financial decisions doesn't mean the overall market behaves irrationally. A few large well-capitalized individuals (or firms) that act rationally can keep the market efficient. EMH is also based on data from capital markets. If we observe irrational behavior by the markets, we will be able to conclude that the markets are irrational. We just haven't found any of this evidence yet. Best wishes. I too just completed the afore mentioned Coursera (Ariely) course.
