Do horizontal cables meet current code for a railing?

A house inspector pointed out that they are climbable unlike vertical spindles. It may have been a local code. Think of a toddler climbing the cables and falling over the railing.

Re: your system for reviewing credit card transactions

I have a spread sheet with a sheet for each credit card. I enter the transactions as they happen, or upon returning home from shopping. Makes reconciling statements easy. I also use transaction alerts. I use the spread sheet to keep track of my rewards too. One sheet tracks gift cards.

I'm retired. Time is one of the benefits.

A couple months ago I noticed that messages with our providers started generating an entry on our Visits page as an encounter. This never happened before. Recently I read in the news that a Midwest hospital group has started submitting insurance claims for these patient encounters. The article attributed it as a progression from when Medicare began covering telehealth visits during the covid lockdown.

I'm all for anyone being paid for their time. I'm in the middle of helping a relative with finding a signed POA for her mother. I said the last option after searching both her and her mom's houses is call the lawyer. I expect the signed copy will have a bill attached.

I got shingles and pneumonia vaccines without a script. I got them at Acme and got a 10% off coupon for my grocery purchase for each shot. I do let them know who my PCP is so my health record is updated.

Re: Thermostat - Ecobee vs. Nest vs. Others?

Our system is a heat pump with oil backup. The thermostat uses the outdoor temperature to determine whether to run the heat pump or the oil. Many of the new internet enabled thermostats use weather.com for the "reported" outdoor temperature. The problem is the temperature of the outdoor unit can vary from the weather.com temperature by several degrees. I found a Honeywell internet enabled thermostat that still uses the temperature sensor on the outdoor unit.

Re: Medicare.gov star ratings on Part D drug plans

I am looking at Medicare.gov to compare Medicare Part D drug plans for 2024. I am comparing total annual costs (premium + deductible + drug costs). I have two questions: 1. How much do the star ratings matter? The least expensive plan for me is offered by Mutual of Omaha but only has a 1.5 star rating. The plans that I have used before (Silverscript and Blue Cross) have 3 star ratings but cost about $500 more annually. 2. I would like to hear from anyone on here who has used Mutual of Omaha for their Part D plan. How was your experience with them? Thanks I can't speak to Mutual of Omaha specifically. Several years ago I noticed the star ratings were all kind of fair or in the middle with no high or standout exceptional ratings. After diggi...

Re: Airport parking in Philly

Besides options already mentioned;

Many of the nearby hotels offer multiple day parking for a fee and shuttle to and from airport if you stay a night. Years ago it was free with a stay. May be a good option if you have an early flight or if bad weather is expected to avoid the rush to the airport.

Park at a train station and ride SEPTA to Airport. Seniors can ride for free. May involve a change of train in Center City for Airport Line. Parking rates are less at stations. You place payment in an envelope with description of car, dates your parking (weekends are free) and parking spot number, slipped into a slot on the back of the big board where you put quarters for your daily parking.

I was recently having problems with our router. Not range but lots of lost connections and having to recycle (power off and on) to fix.

I was all set to buy a new router when I updated the firmware and now all the issues are fixed.

Look into checking the firmware version and see if there is an update.

I notice you don't mention recycling (power off and on) have you tried that? I'd do the modem too. Could be an easy fix.

I use to just review the email alerts and also the transactions on the monthly statements and hoped I was able to detect any errors. One company did not send transaction alerts but would send a daily email with the account balance, so I started an excel sheet with that cards transactions so I could reconcile to the daily email. I've now expanded that sheet by giving each credit card is on it's own tab. I enter each transaction's date, vendor and amount either as I make them online or when I get home from shopping. Not much help but early in my career I was working in Greenland and flew there on USAF Military Airlift Command C-141 cargo/passenger jets out of McGuire AFB in New Jersey. On occasion the passenger terminal at McGuire was crowded with military retirees and spouses waiting to hitch a standby spot on flights. The routine was they checked in the scheduled passengers first then announced it was time for any stand by passengers to come to the counter. If it was a flight to Europe there would be a cattle like crowd at the counter. When it was a flight for Greenland no one got up. :D I also recall on my first flight, one of the loadmasters walking through the passenger seating area with a box of ear plugs handing a set to each passenger. I've not read all the replies. We made a deal with our son and daughter. They took the subsidized loans and if they finished school, mom and dad would pay off the loans. If they didn't finish school they had to pay off the loans. I like this. Fits in with roughly half college costs saved in 529s. Thanks. In fact, I’d like to tie it to success after college. Can’t think how yet… The rates and fees on unsubsidized loans aren't cheap - and unlike subsidized loans interest starts accrueing immediately. I don't believe skin-in-the-game works anyway (if they are irresponsible them owing money won't matter to them) but if I did - paying extra taxes by avoiding 529 use and paying a ton in fees and interest for loans isn't the path I would choose. ...

If they didn't finish school they had to pay off the loans. Were you using a 529? Until recently 529s could not be used tax-free for student debt repayment, and now it's a lifetime limit of $10,000. So to the extent it's about principle and not a family's limited ability to save for college, "skin in the game" has to be weighed against both parents and child paying extra unnecessary taxes by not taking maximum advantage of things like 529s. No we did not use 529's. Offer was extended in 2005 when son was a senior and daughter was a junior in high school. We never...

Also, just because a company is supplying oil doesn't mean that's who has to service the boiler, right? Can't you just call a repairman if/when you need that type of service? Can you separate out the need for oil from the need for repair? If so, then you're not strapped in to the highest price oil just because you want their repair service.

We have a heat pump with oil backup. We have a service contract with a top rated HVAC contractor and we buy oil from who ever is the cheapest local supplier at www.cashheatingoil.com (you don't have to pay cash). In our zip code the current low price is 3.22/gal. It changes daily.

Not sure this will do it for you, but I would check out Akruto ($9/ quarter subscription).

When my laptop and phone are on the same wifi, Akruto syncs my laptop Outlook to my phone's calendar, contacts and notes. You can have it set to sync through the internet. You can have it set to sync your email.

For email I use Thunderbird on my laptop and BlueMail on my android phone in parallel and not synced. I use my laptop as primary for my email so if I send an email from my phone, it automatically bcc's myself and later when back at my laptop, I move the message to my sent mail.

Once you do get it "cleaned" I would plug it in outside and operate it on high to burn off any dust on the wires. It will likely be creating an odor until burned off.

I don't like this style of space heater. I prefer the oil filled style. If a blanket or clothing winds up over the heater a fire will result, not so with the oil filled.

Does it have a tip over shutoff? If a pet or person knocks it over a fire can start.

The dust issue tells me this is an older heater.

I'd replace it with an oil filled space heater.

In our area, most (if not all) grocery stores have a catering department. As to your national angle, some are large regional brands and subsidiaries of companies with many brands. Thinking of Albertsons...

You can enter your zip code and see if they have catered offerings in your area...

Not sure of your region. We are near Philadelphia and have a well with a jet pump ( can do limited watering).

For the last 10 years, I've over seeded in the Fall with Tall Fescue. Chose that for drought tolerance with our watering limitation.

This summer we had more heat and drought than normal. A few areas went brown during the worst, but have now greened up after recent rains.

At this age your health can turn on a dime. My wife is on Medicare with Aetna (Continental Life) Plan G supplement. Her first year monthly premium was $135.61, second year was $147.77/mo and third is $153.69/mo.
