Re: waiting to pay CC bill to earn interest?

I always wondered why there is so much cash in my checking account. It’s because there are about 45 days of expenses paid on my credit card just sitting there year round earning interest until my credit card bill gets paid.

It’s perpetual free money I get to use because I get paid in advance and get free credit. At Fidelity this free float earns about 5% interest and is not a trivial amount for me.

Re: New 2023 Tesla - IRS Seller Report

I wouldn't worry too much about the seller report. This requirement came out of obscure regulations and FAQs issued by Treasury earlier this year, and I am skeptical that there was much compliance on them this year, particularly because the guidance was revised several times. The most recent guidance seems to indicate that buyers shouldn't expect to receive the report for new purchases until January 1, 2024 at the earliest (see the last question): https://www.irs.gov/pub/taxpros/fs-2023-22.pdf Just file for the credit on Form 8936 with your VIN, and if there is any issue or audit, you'll be able to reference your paperwork documenting the purchase from Tesla. Also, there is no limit on how often you can claim the credit. Form 8936 even has...

New 2023 Tesla - IRS Seller Report

I purchased a new Tesla Model Y in May this year that should qualify for the $7,500 tax credit. I just read that I should have been furnished with a "seller report" from Tesla (https://www.natlawreview.com/article/ira-update-irs-releases-reporting-requirements-ev-manufacturers-and-sellers) that is also reported to the IRS. I have no record of receiving this. Did anybody else purchase a Tesla in 2023 and receive this report? I don't recall ever providing my SSN to the dealer. What is the best way to contact Tesla to obtain this report? Also, are there any sources that state how often you can claim the $7,500 credit. We received one in 2022 for the purchase of a PHEV that qualified under the applicable rules at the time of purchase.

Does FDLXX (treasury only fund) act as a settlement fund at Fidelity? No If I have no cash in my account with this fund liquidate to cover the shortfall automatically? Yes To clarify, you have to manually buy FDLXX, but Fidelity will auto liquidate it for you to. So if you are willing to manually buy FDLXX, you can hold all your cash in it and not have to do anything extra if you want to buy anything with those funds or make payments, transfers, withdrawals, etc. I have a Fidelity Cash Management Account, and I hold all my "cash" in FDLXX, I have to manually buy it twice a week on pay day, but then I have all my bills (credit cards and mortgage) pulled from my account via ACH, and I do not have to do anything as Fidelity automati...

This will not be contained quickly. Most international flights to Israel are turning around or diverting.

If your flight is cancelled you will receive a refund. I suspect prepaid hotels would also give you a refund and any prepaid tours will be cancelled and refunded. I don’t see a risk of losing much money here.

And maybe I’m wrong and it will be contained and you’ll be able to go to many destinations. This seems different though.

You pay federal tax on both treasuries and CDs so no idea why that factors into the formula. If your state tax rate is 7% then just multiply the CD rate by 93% and then compare to the treasury rate. If yield is the sole factor then go with the higher yield.

Keep in mind that treasuries are highly liquid and you can sell easily at the market rate. Don’t plan on doing that with CDs.

I use my brokerage account and am happy to avoid Treasury Direct. Just cashed out my ibonds from TD.

Banks have to mark the mortgages down. Kind of. Depends on the size. It is treated as a footnote. The regulators looks at this number.

The market down is what caused Silicon Valley Bank to fail.
A 27 year treasury bond with a 3% coupon is marked differently than a 27 year mortgage with a 3% interest rate. The treasury bond is marked lower even with no risk of default.

Re: Approaching mortgage lender to buy out loan?

Is this the right way to understand this: Made up numbers here: A house was purchased at the agreed upon price of 500,000. A down payment of 20% was made and then borrowed 400,000 at 3%. The loan is say 3 years old - so has a balance remaining of 374,176 and 34,877 in interest has been paid. The mortgage holder, wants the lender to accept LESS than the 374,176 that is still owed to close out the loan? that doesn't sound like it benefits the lender all that much... Wouldn't it be in the Lender's best interest to call in the loan and if the mortgage holder can't pay it in full - for the lender to evict the mortgage holder and sell the house?? It benefits the lender because that asset (the mortgage) is not worth $374k currently. In today's in...

Why would any lender do this when you are statistically likely to move in 10 years and payoff the mortgage in full?

Since this is obviously impossible for a dozen different reasons, has anyone thought of how to synthetically pull this off? Would buying a now discounted 30 year treasury with the same remaining lifespan as your home loan accomplish the same thing? There has to be a way, in theory to match the outcome.

4th graders and their families get a pass for free entry to all national parks, for a year (Sept 1 - Aug 31). It's fun to imagine an epic year of visiting national parks. I'm thinking that, working around the school calendar, we could visit one in the fall, one in the winter, one in the spring, and then a few in the summer. If you were going to prioritize going to national parks for a year (with a 9 year old), which would you prioritize in which season? 4th graders and their traveling companions get a free pass, but the 4th grader has to be with you to get into a park for free. Planning a full year trip to national parks based on $80 of cost savings is truly absurd, assuming you'd actually want your 4th grader to go to school. But that is ...

If you don't travel there is little value in that, even if it sounds too good to be true for us travelers.

Chase dialed back the higher pay yourself back redemption options, especially if you don't have a premium card. I would keep an eye out for what will happen on July 1 when they tend to change things. You could also look and see if there are gift card discounts that are of value to you. If you don't travel then that is probably the only way to get more than 1 cent per point.

Back in August we flew to Milan from JFK and Emirates still had a mask rule. On the way there most people had them on and the flight attendants were enforcing the rule...and people were complying. On the way back it totally fell apart. Nobody was wearing masks (they are not required by US or Italy). The flight attendants tried to enforce but passengers just ignored them and they gave up within an hour.

The interest income line on your 1040 is not restricted to only interest reported on 1099s. You have to report all interest income you receive regardless of whether or not you have a 1099. Some of our clients have family and friend loans where they receive interest income. The family and friends don't issue 1099s but we still report the income. Keep in mind you can still offset travel purchases at 1.5x as long as you use the Chase travel portal, which I have done in the past with no complaints.

Going forward I would like to build up a bigger hoard of points and use them to transfer to airlines for tickets. No, it's $900 for sure
https://creditcards.chase.com/business- ... s/ink/cash

I've never seen a bonus this big.
There have been several Chase cards with a 100,000 bonus before. Equivilent to $1,500 at the 1.5 c/m valuation.
That valuation only applies "when redeemed for travel."

I don't want to travel - I want cash. Such valuations don't matter in this case.
100,000 chase points can still be redeemed for $1000 cash if you don't want to travel.
And you can redeem at a higher value with Chase's "Pay Yourself Back" feature, e.g., 1.5 cents per UR point for dining purchases, if you have the Reserve.
That ends 12/31 unless extended again. He won't have the points by 12/31

Almost certain you don't have 30 year Treasury Bonds.

Re: Selling T-Bills early

There's no complicated accounting. When they mature you will pay tax as well

There's also no free lunch though. Your current tbills that have 6 months to maturity have the same yield as a new 6 month tbill purchased today.

Zero drop shoes aren't for everyone. If you're a runner you can't just jump from high drop to zero drop without some risk of injury. People usually make the move slowly. For hiking, not sure how much it matters.

Have you looked at the Brooks Cascadia? I use them for trail running and hiking. I've done multiple 50k races on very technical terrain in these shoes. As well as two R2R2R trail runs (double Grand Canyon crossings)

Re: Interactive Brokers (Best Kept Secret)

Is there an activity register for IBRK that I can use to track my cash transactions? I can't seem to fine anything and just generate awkward reports to view the activity.

Also, is there a minimum fee that needs to be generated each month for a Pro account? I'm considering moving from Lite to Pro for the lower margin rates, assuming the minimum fee is small enough to justify the change.

Re: Travel agent for travel abroad?

Planning on traveling to northern Italy next summer. I haven’t been happy with lodging options that are available online. Most reservations websites say they are either unavailable or sold out. If you are looking at specific dates there could be something going on there during those dates so the hotels could already be booked. When my son graduated from college all the hotels quickly booked up for that weekend a year in advance as soon as the reservations were available. Some annual events will also cause all the hotels in a small town to quickly book up. I would suggest calling one of the hotels that your are interested in and they can tell what is going on. (Check the local time zone there before calling.) Contrary to the prior post I ha...
