Re: Do the Bogleheads here tithe based on net or gross salar

Net. I guess I've always interpreted it as 10% of what we receive. Someday we'll be living off of the retirement funds, and we'll tithe based on what we withdraw from them annually. We'll then give 10% of our estate (covering any leftover money).

Re: Restaurant gift cards at a discount

If you use a Target Red Card (credit or debit), it will take 5% off of most gift cards (but not Amex, Visa, Target). Re: Potential Florida Move from NJ

Could you buy a place in Florida and establish residency there, while keeping the place in NJ for a while? (I think the rule used to be 6 months+, not sure now) You could spend 8 months in FL and 4 months in NJ while you decide which you like better and still achieve your tax goals.

Re: Dealing with my parents

Your parent's money isn't really your business. You wouldn't want them telling you how to spend your money, would you? If you don't like buying them gifts, then don't. If you don't want to help around their house, then don't.

Re: College Funding Strategies

Clark Howard's rule of thumb is a good one I think: You should only spend over 4 years what you will earn your first year out of college. I think Clark Howard's rule of thumb is only borrow what you expect to earn your first year out of college. (If starting salaries in your field are $50K then tha...
