It can go up, it can go down. Just put half in stocks and half in bonds.

Or do a "permanent portfolio" of equal parts of stock, long bonds, gold and cash, to cover all your bases.

Excellent insights. I take note.

Just to clarify, this was originally a single family house. There are no more units: just one apartment in the first floor, and a studio apartment in the basement.

The garage is not attached to the house -- there was no risk of fumes getting in the house.

Financial planning is very tricky when the person is a non-US citizen using US retirement plans.

Please check if your home country has a tax treaty with the US.
