2023 Roth IRA distribution... followed by contribution
Hi all,
I took a $7,500 qualified distribution from Roth IRA, then about a month later, contributed $7,500 to same Roth IRA as my 2023 contribution.
I just reently became aware of the '60 day rule' and I'm wondering if I can count that 'contribution' as a 'recharacterization' instead, that way, I could still contribute another $7,500 to the Roth for 2023.
When I try to contribute more, however, VG says I've already contributed the max ($7,500) for this year. Any advice ??? thx.

best CD rate and/or deposit 'bonus' from bank?
closing soon on sale of primary home (moving to our condo which we were renting to tenants), proceeds will be approx $350K which will ultimately be split into a # of buckets for short, medium, and long-term purchases, expenses, and investments including CDs. wondering if there are any particularly attractive CD rates and/or deposit bonuses available for a chunk of change this large. I'd entertain putting pretty much the whole shabang into 1 pot, at least temporarily, if it was worth it... looked into it a bit and found some jumbo CDs and some bank deposit bonuses, but nuthin' yet to knock me' sox off. any/all input deeply appreciated, thanks ! For those of you interested in 'timing' the TIAA real estate account,
(hopefully you sold sometime around when this thread originated in August 2022, saving yourself about a 12% loss from peak to now),
perhaps it is time to consider starting to get back in... seems to be leveling out...

from which IRA/retirement acct should I withdraw $$$ first ???
Hi all, seeking some guidance, Age: 59 1/2, plus a few more (quick) revolutions around the sun. Stable career/salary; no plans to retire anytime soon. Majority of (approx) $1.5MM retirement funds VERY conservatively allocated in TIAA in 403(b) and similars, plus $200K or so spread amongst Vanguard Roth, Vanguard SEP-IRA, and TIAA (inherited) traditional IRA. For a variety of reasons, although still 100% employed, I do need to redeem some funds from one of these accts this year, and while I don't want to "let the tax tail wag the dog", I am thinking, rather, I am asking: - Would it be best to leave the Roth alone, as it will never be taxed (if laws don't change), & let it keep growing tax-free? - Are there any differences betwe...

Re: STEM Options for bright college kid
Not sure if it’s been mentioned, but perhaps BIOMEDICAL ENGINEERING would be of interest…
A hybrid, if you will, of STEM & medicine. Could be very interesting & rewarding to design or develop new implantable medical devices, imaging methods, diagnostic tools etc.
It Might involve mechanical engineering concepts if working in the musculoskeletal field, for example, or EE if working in neural networks or interfacing prosthetics with the nervous system… or a combination. Some say Biomed Engineers are a Jack of all trades, and a master of none. Sometimes that’s what’s needed to address complex clinical problems.

Re: I Bonds Mega Thread (I Bond Heads Rejoice!)
Just a quick note; a month after 9/11 had occurred (oct 2001), seeking a 'safe' investment, and taking advice on this forum from the i-bond crew (ML, TL?), I invested $27K in i-bonds...
current value: $85.7K WOW !!!
current interest rate: 12.76%
pretty darn good investment,
except i suppose the actual value of the $85.7K is gonna be reduced by about 15-25% by federal taxes (state too???), depending on if/when I cash them...
Any suggestions on how to reduce tax burden on these? my present strategy is to hold as long as possible and cash in during a year when I'm retired and earning much less than now.
thanks all

With all due respect, proclaiming to be “an outstanding catch” is certainly not consistent with the quality of the schools at which you are considering working. None are listed in the top 50 engineering schools (Lehigh is #71) or top 50 research institutions (Cincy is #51). Perhaps your goal is to be a big fish in a small pond, and there’s nothing wrong with that…
…That being said, it seems you’re already biased towards maximizing lifestyle/family issues above career considerations, which is fantastic. No one on their deathbed ever wished they could have an extra day to work.
Good luck

Hmmmm… 7% annualized return with 8% inflation anyhow congrats & good luck I hope it works out for youlivingthedream17 wrote: ↑Thu Aug 04, 2022 9:47 amNote: I said 7-10 years
We'd like to spend about 80k/year so 30x would be $2.4M, but I'd feel more comfortable at 3M.
1.25M over 10 years with a 7% annualized return = about $2.5M without additional contributions.
Across all accounts, we contribute $6500 monthly on average.
Same calc with our additional contributions gets us to $2.7M at 7 years, or $3.6M at 10 years.
Ps also see my earlier post here about protective puts as insurance…

If you don’t want to sell right away, but then again you don’t want to risk losing all that profit, perhaps consider a protective put as an ‘insurance policy’:

Student is bright; will prob do quite well on SAT without any xtra prep.
I would try to work more on the “slothful” aspect of their personality.
Why ?
1) Suppose they do SAT prep, maybe get a few xtra points on the SAT, maybe get into a better school, then can’t keep up in college because they are slothful. College requires considerable more effort than high school...
Also, perhaps more importantly, in the long-haul,
2) Who would you rather hire? a slothful bright person, or, an energetic, hard-working person of average intelligence ?

Re: What time of the day is good to buy ETF / Index funds ?
There is a big difference between ETFs and Mutual Funds:
ETFs you can buy/sell all day long, they trade up and down all day long, like any regular stock. You can buy and sell an ETF at different prices in the same day...
In sharp contrast, Mutual Funds are only priced once per day, at the closing of the market on any given day.

Try silk & steel strings to get rid of that metallic sound.
Easier on the fingers too.
A professional musician at my local music store thought i was crazy when i bought a new 12-string there and told him to set it up with silk & steel strings.
Then when i came to pick it up, he was raving at how great it sound and felt. He couldn’t believe it...
(Another easy alternative, string it up with only 6 strings... then you have some extra room between strings to mess around )

Not sure if this has been discussed,
But, social-life wise, Princeton has about 1/2 mile strip of pancake houses and dinky bars;

I think he would have a lot more fun at Vandy, and regardless of where he goes, get an ok job with an EE undergrad degree.
Either way, should then go to a high-powered grad school if he’s serious about an EE career. JMHO.

If you are so certain stocks will continue to crash,
Not only should you sell all your stocks,
You should also ‘short’ the market by buying (for example) the ETFs
PSQ (inverse of QQQ) and/or SPDN (inverse of S&P 500)
There are also ETFs that magnify stock market losses, for example SQQQ which is 3X the inverse of QQQ.
Good luck all, and stay healthy and safe !

I drove my Miata day in and day out to work and everywhere for 12 years (unless there was snow on the road !), logging about 185K miles, and I still regret selling it a few years ago
At least give it a test drive, you might be very surprised and quite pleased with the acceleration and the very well-balanced handling. “There are obvious conflicts in (of) interest here..” this is a red flag; you should look up your hospital / university’s ? policy on managing or eliminating conflicts of interest... also carefully read the licensing agreement between your hospital and the licensee; there may be provisions essentially preventing you from working with a potential competitor, also when you license a technology to a company it frequently includes ‘know-how’ in addition to the patent itself, look into that too, just somethings to consider...
Setting up an LLC or a corporation to do consulting is no big deal, you dont need a lawyer, but consider looking into the above before doing so.... wishing you all the best and great success...

What do you/other BH's consider 'competitive' life insurance rates ? I too have term life insurance thru TIAA, have had it for some time, with premiums going up each year (as has my age, of course; now 58)... but this yr's premium was about $3500 and it seems very expensive to me. I have no data with which to compare this, so i would appreciate any input here on what is considered a competitive rate for term life insurance. Policy amount is $1M. Thanx in advance for any and all replies.

Re: Knee Replacement questions
This is not medical advice, i am not a dr,
But i know others who have gone thru this and i would recommend:
1) lose weight before the procedure (if at all overweight) because every xtra lb adds even more load to the joint;
2) choose a surgeon who preferably works in a teaching hospital/medical school and who has performed many of these procedures.
3) check on his/her surgical infection rate as well, and/or that of the facility, if possible... infection of a total knee implant almost always requires removal of the hardware.
4) discuss the various total knee replacement options, there are several....
5) comply with all post-op rehab/etc; patient noncompliance is a major source of failure or delayed healing...
Good luck !

Good luck !

Re: Dental treatment, reduced cost, teaching university
Perhaps the teaching university has an ongoing clinical trial... You can search on clinical trials.gov Here I searched for "dental implant" and included only those studies still open: https://clinicaltrials.gov/ct2/results?term=Dental+implant&recr=Open&no_unk=Y In a clinical trial the work would be likely be done by an experienced dentist, not a student. The trial might be to compare 2 different types of implants, or techniques, or whatever. Typically the treatment is free (and sometimes there is compensation too). Of course, there are usually several followup visits required as part of the trial. Might be worth checking it out. But if not, it is prob still worth it to see if you can get work done at a reduced rate. Heck i...

Yes, if you read the whole blurb, the book is said to offer contrarian advice, and the 'irreverence' is aimed at typical wall st common sense... So the term is used in a positive light here...

Re: day trip or 2day trips from Boston
Just stay put in Beantown; there is plenty to do there; I wouldn't be driving to MV or the Cape or wherever...
Being Memorial Day weekend, traffic nightmares will likely abound all around.
As ready mentioned, Fenway Park is a gr8 idea, If you can deal with Red Sox fans
The north end, No name restaurant, Haahhavaaahhd squaaaahe, Tons of stuff to do. Enjoy.

Lodging recommendation - Martha's Vineyard
Greetings,
I know the bogleheads are a well-traveled bunch; can anyone recommend lodging on Martha's Vineyard for a weekend in mid-June ?
I checked trip advisor & got a few good ideas, but I think it's best to hear from someone who's been there, preferably recently ... Anyone ???
Would prob prefer B&B but a hotel is ok, also prefer on beach or harbor town... Also looking for suggestions for town in which to stay, restaurants & things to do.... Thanks in advance for any replies & if none, that's understandable considering the specificity of this request.

Re: The vanishing of USP drugs?
see: http://qualitymatters.usp.org/what-letters-usp-mean-label-your-medicine here is a snippet: "...today, drugs sold in the United States are required to meet USP standards regardless of whether they include the letters “USP” on the label. As a result, some manufacturers have dropped the practice, but many still include “USP” on the label after the ingredient name. Look in your medicine cabinet, chances are you have a popular first aid antiseptic with a label that reads “Hydrogen Peroxide Topical Solution 3% USP” or something similar. Those 3 letters on the label means this product was made to USP standards". for more info on roles of USP and FDA: http://www.usp.org/about-usp/legal-recognition/working-us-fda it's interesting stuf...

Listing agent should look into it --- that's the reason ur paying him/her.... Doubtful the city would tear anything down but if work was done without permits and/or improperly so needs fixing... That is all on the seller so you

But I'm an east-coaster traveling this week with my adult children to LA area /Venice beach /pacific coast highway...
As an owner of a strat, 12 string, standard 6 string, folk guitar, and resonator guitar I was just wondering if one of u Californians could tell me where I might go to look for a vintage parlor guitar in LA area ... My google search led to some false leads ....
Thx in advance

Estate planning - fate of retirement accts - confused!!!
i certainly hope I will live long enough to enjoy my retirement monies, but any of us could get hit by the proverbial bus any day.... So I am finally triying to sort out numerous estate planning issues... And I am especially confused about my retirement accounts. On the one hand, I spoke with an estate planning attorney who was highly recommended by a friend, and he said all monies ie life insurance, retirement accounts become 'fungible' upon my death and essentially get lumped into 1 pot, but that the life insurance proceeds are not taxed, whereas funds from the retirement accts would be taxed. On the other hand, I've read some articles saying the retirement accts are passed onto heirs as retirement accounts, and RMDs must be taken and/or ...
