Re: New job, Please recommend 401k Allocations

Thank you all for your support and feedback- so if I'm doing 100% Schwab stocks... should I (would you..) even consider a percentage of their international index fund? If so, what percentage? Or should I just do 100% S&P? It looks like S&P outperforms international in every way... Thank you again!!!

New job, Please recommend 401k Allocations

So I'm turning 30 in a couple of months, and started a new job- unfortunately they don't offer a match on the 401k, but instead offer a profit sharing program where they contribute approx $725 at the end of each fiscal year.

Here are the fund choices for the new 401k: https://www.sponsorportal.com/SponsorsP ... 937112TRAD

Could you recommend what you would pick and what percentages?

Thanks so much....

How do I find that out? I looked in my 401k book that was provided, there was no mention of load fees.

Thanks Laura, I like that idea. I will roll it over into an IRA. What is your opinion on the one fund vs. the 2 together that supernova recommended ?

I've been trying for my HR dept to add a fund to the Fidelity 401k list of funds, which already include good spartan options... however not a good international option. So, I've been requesting the Spartan International ex-US fund to be added for about a year now. Here are some of the emails she sent to me, following my first email to her. I am mostly providing the emails as some back-story, because it was the newest email left me thinking "hmmm... not sure how to reply to that one", which brought me here. 6/25/12 (my first email to her) I am grateful that our 401k plan contains good choices for index fund investors for the US Stock Market and the US Bond Market with the Fidelity Spartan index funds. I rarely drive like an idiot. However, the one time I had a loaner vehicle I made sure to mess around as much as possible. (i.e. burnouts, pulling on the e brake, just in general driving like a jerk in empty parking lots) Based on my own experiences, I would never purchase a loaner car. The driver has no reason to keep it in good condition mechanically, only aesthetically.

I got the amex BCE and the Fidelity Amex 2% at around the same time. I use my 2% for everything, because it goes right into my roth ira. Haven't used the BCE ever since, though I carry it as a backup. If you do chose to go with BCE make sure you find out if they have any sign up bonuses. I received $100 for charging $1500 within the first 3 months. If I had to do it again, I'd have just stuck with the Fidelity card.... or gotten a PENFED card if I was older.

Where to put money beyond emergency fund?

I hope you guys can recommend me a strategy.

I am 25 years old. I have $12k saved in an emergency fund in ally, earning 0.95%. 33% of each paycheck goes there. I only need $10k for the emergency fund, so anything in addition to this, would go toward my goals... i.e. house downpayment in 10 years.

I don't want a house for about 10 years from now. I imagine I could come up with some good money in 10 years saving the way I am.

I don't mind losing some principal within the 10 years temporarily, I will not touch it no matter what.

Should I just leave it in ally, or is there anything better I can do?

Re: NetFlix vs Amazon Prime vs Hulu Plus

After figuring out that I only watch a couple tv shows (the daily show..) and some movies, I decided to get rid of cable completely. I've been living with Hulu plus and Netflix for about 2 years now, and instead of $130/month, it's $50 for internet, and $8 a piece for netflix and hulu. All the new tv shows are on hulu, and a lot of the old tv shows are on netflix.

My only gripes: 1. hulu is not broadcast in 5.1 surround sound like Netflix is, which doesn't matter for most people. 2. hulu provides tv shows the day after they come out. At $8/month including commercials you would think it could be live broadcast...

PS I have this setup on my XBOX, which can be reproduced on a Roku (they're cheap.... $60 or so)

I've heard to wait just over 3 months (61 days+) before you ask for a credit increase. I'm not sure if this is a rule of thumb or a fact, but it's spread widely amongst other forums. I've also read to request 3x the amount you currently have....i.e. you have $3000 credit limit, ask for $9000.

I have an outstanding auto loan ~$8100 and the loan is about 5%. I recently depleted my savings. My first instinct was to pay off the car in full, and put the difference in my savings account. Wondering if I should do that, or if I should put the full amount into the savings account and continue making payments. I am looking to move soon (I am renting) and plan on taking on a new job, with a more expensive apartment, so I'm not sure if it would be better suited just hanging out in my savings until I figure that out.

The more advantageous of the two options you pose, would be option 2. Closing a credit line increases your debt to credit ratio (a bad thing). Closing a credit card is a bad idea if a good credit score is the goal. Yes, it will recover eventually, but so what. Just keep the credit line open. The "hard hit" on your credit resulting from the change from secured to unsecured is much less than that of closing a credit line and increasing your debt ratio. It seems that you think that having lots of open credit hurts you, and this simply isn't true. What hurts you is if you use too much of your available credit.... again known as your "debt to credit ratio". In fact, people ask for credit line increases simply to decrease thei...

Re: At what age did you start investing?

Started at age 23 when employer automatically started putting 3% into 401k. Discovered they matched to 6%, started reading about it, and have since added a Roth ira. I'm now 25 and have accumulated about 10k in total and am very pleased :sharebeer

Why 20% in bonds?

Why is this *the* number for younger age groups? Why not 10% or 15% or 25%? How did they arrive at 20%?
