Re: Cybertruck-anyone else get to try it on?
I think the Cybertruck will go down in history as one of the most poorly constructed vehicles ever made. There are now many documented instances of wheels falling off because the control arm is far undersized for the weight of the vehicle. If you it through too-deep a puddle the entire electrical system can short and kill the vehicle. You’re not supposed to take it through a car wash. There are reports of the Cybertruck shutting itself off with only seconds of warning while driving. I could go on and on. It’s a big heap of garbage. Munro and associates seem to disagree with you. Their utube videos are already doing a teardown, most seem to be gushing. Certainly the batter removal where the also drop down the interior at the same time sugge...

Re: Cybertruck-anyone else get to try it on?
There may be a time when these EV trucks make sence but its not now. Interestingly, the base trim (Pro) of the Ford Lightning is currently showing $52,140 for me. The F-150 XLT 4x4 crewcab, which appears to be the closest match to the features and amenities of the Lightning (and anecdotally appears to be the most popular configuration) is showing $54,090. So for a buyer who doesn't need long range, but is shopping for a nicely equipped full-size pickup, the EV option could actually be cheaper even before factoring in any tax credit (I don't know if the Lightning qualifies?) or fuel cost savings. In fairness, I should probably mention here that once all the fees are added on to the F-150 or Lightning, the cost is closer than I expected to t...

Re: Cybertruck-anyone else get to try it on?
I have two reserved and may buy one if reviews and access to chargers seem adequate for where I want to go. The first, $100, reservation was made almost three years ago. That was before becoming the owner of a Tesla (MY Long-range), which we have fallen in love with! The second, $250, reservation was made a few months ago within the account of our Model Y to see if "loyalists" get priority or not. A third-party website of unknown accuracy predicts I'll get the opportunity to buy a Cybertruck in November of 2024. Since I'm planning on buying a Model X Plaid as soon as rumored updates (especially a front bumper camera), become available, I'd rather not fork out another $100K (for a Cyberbeast) until 2025 or beyond - preferably when...

Re: Cybertruck-anyone else get to try it on?
I had a deposit on CyberTruck pretty early in the process. My Model X is VIN 0002xx, which I put a deposit on iirc more than 2 years before it became available. I didn’t need a pickup truck, but wanted a truck that I could just throw firewood into the bed of; our volunteer group that delivers firewood to seniors always bothers me because loading the trucks is an overly gentle act so as not to ding the bed. Tesla customer service is not what it was 8 years ago. The CyberTruck is not what was promised. I canceled my deposit and put an order in for a Mercedes EQS SUV instead. I will be driving in luxury and will not use it for firewood delivery :D It is an interesting commentary on the company when you and I buy others or talk about downsides.

Cybertruck-anyone else get to try it on?
I was not a super early reservation holder, current expectation is our truck would be ready late this year or January of 2025. Normally when vehicle shopping we as a couple like to try things on for size as we are very different heights/weights. The Tesla experience seems to be they get your payment before getting in the car, though nowadays test rides are available for the cars. This is not true for the Cybertruck yet. We reached out online to someone that was expecting delivery, begged for a chance to just sit in the truck. The day after he accepted delivery we were able to sit in the truck, he drove around for a couple miles. The interior of the front row was better than expected. The guys at Munro and associates have begun videos on the...

So I visited a place that handles saunas. 5x7, exterior construction on my surface. Electric not included. 2-3 hrs to install, will charge a bit for my distance. Temps 185-190 expected after 30-40 minutes.
RM, Northstart, Outdoor, 5x7, V2 $18,751
Finnleo Euro 5x7 $20,773
Walls will only be two inches thick for both of them? That might scare me into doing my own, or else building a legit frame and insulate better. We get hurricanes.
Any thoughts?

Re: Can I really really afford a 3 million mortgage?
It reads to me as if the OP is failing to consider cost of living in job offers. When asking a financial question in a financial forum one has to expect to consider these things. I think the OP needs to set up a simple chart for salary, taxes, expected expenses and the dollar value of being close to family. But this needs to be tempered with ones long term values and financial goals. Then the choice and answer to his/her question is easy.
This isn't a question of can one afford it, it is a question of should one afford it.
The home choices also cant be hypothetical, they have to be real.

Re: For those of you in early retirement, what is your Asset Allocation and withdrawal rate?
I understand during a normal retirement age you can start to withdraw about 4% of portfolio (add inflation each year), but the key it to be flexible. But for early retirement people you have 50 years of living left, not 30 years. So it's probably better to be more conservative with your withdrawal rate. For those of you who are in early retirement, how much do you withdraw? I know 60 Stocks and 40 Bonds is quite popular for normal retirement age. But will 60-40 work for early retirement age? Is it better to be a little more aggressive since you have 50 years of living instead of 30 years? For those of you who are in early retirement, what is your Asset Allocation and why? In order to answer these questions, I think one needs to look at var...

Re: Do you tip hotel staff when checking out?
I am 99.9% sure that no supermarket employee is a "tipped employee," so you don't need to tip them. Ditto cooks and dishwashers in restaurants. The tradition is that hotel housekeepers and waitstaff are tipped, SO they get paid less... SO they need tips. The system sucks, and in the US it has an ugly backstory. The fiction that tips are extraordinary rewards for extraordinary performance doesn't fit reality. In the case of hotel housekeepers, the level of service is pretty standardized. If it's a well-run hotel the chances of below-par service is small. The chances that a housekeeper will have the opportunity to perform outstanding above-and-beyond service is also small. So does a housekeeper "deserve" a tip for "j...

Re: What should a taxpayer expect a CPA to do?
Our tax returns are done by a CPA. We pay both Federal and state tax. Income from US Govt obligations is not taxed by states. Our CPA does NOT examine our fund holdings to ascertain if some of their dividends come from US Govt obligations. For example, 49.37 % of dividends paid by Vanguard Federal Money Market Fund (the settlement fund) in 2023 were from US Govt obligations. The CPA listed all dividends from the fund as taxable until I gave her a note referring to a Vanguard file listing US Govt obligations percent for all their funds/ETFs. Should we expect a CPA doing our tax returns to pay attention to such details without prompting? I think of our CPA as a partner. There is give and take, things to be managed. This CPA told us to spend ...

My wife and I recently closed on a modest house in a neighborhood we love. We hope to spend 20+ years in this house. We are currently childless, but plan to have one or two children in the next five years, and bought the house with this in mind. To those of you who have lived in one home for 20+ years: 1) What is one thing you wish you had done soon after you first moved in? 2) What "avoidable" mistake did you make along the way? 3) Any other unconventional advice for long-term home ownership? My sense of things is that in normal markets a buyer can push for some upgrades to aging systems or other price concessions based upon the condition of things. It seemed a shame to live in a house just putting up with things and then fixing...

Phones are apple and work well.
Have used ipads and they work well. A 2017 ipad is slow, upgrade arriving today.
Main screen at home was bought a couple years ago, having enough issues we want to go with a mac mini product.
For those that use apple as a main computer at home, what steps do you take for security?
Ad blockers?
Ad aware?
Do you use products like Spybot? Antivirus?
Apple based password managers?
Best management practices?
Thank you.

Re: Tracking gross or net portfolio value
So I was thinking that depending on the portfolio composition, how much of it is Roth, basis, tax-deferred, etc, a person has a certain effective amount. A million in Roth is really a million. A million in traditional IRA is probably less. It is reasonable to assume that most people will pay at least 12% on that money. So I started tracking a new metric that I call the gross value of the portfolio. What I do is I assume a conservative tax rate of 12% and all Roth, basis, and cash are inflated by 12%. Then I add all tax-deferred funds and I come up with a value of a portfolio as if it consisted enirely of pre-tax funds. Alternatively, someone could instead tax all the tax defered funds and gains and come up with a net after-tax value. Of co...

"Prepared" can be subject to all interpretations... that can lead to disasters. I was thinking more someone who were NOT involved in heavy stuff (addictions, healthcare or got stolen), was not poor to begin with, nor cases in which their company pension went kaput. I know about VPW, SWR..., I don't really need more details about them (I understand their benefits). The reason why I ask is because I saw quite a few sources mentioning that 2.7% or 3.3% is now the new 4%, including Morningstar in 2021 but possibly amended that later. I can understand the flexibility of probabilities, but I wonder if there are actual & recent real-life cases proving their point , or if it a strategy to get more $ from investors. Moving in retirement.
We built our dream home many years ago. Between 10-20 acres. Retired now. Mid 50s/mid60's couple. We are well able to tend to what we have, but as we age we have a little bit of concern that we have bitten off more than we can chew. Lots of flower beds, gardening, farm needs. We have begun talking about moving, able to go anywhere, within reason. If we moved, it would be a major upheaval. We could make for a simpler retirement life, make it such that we could get up and go travel a lot more easily. Currently farm needs keep us travelling long periods at once. It is enjoyable, but it as if our hobbies and interests are our master. For those that moved after retirement, why? Was it tough to leave behind things you had built and dreamed about?...

Kudos to Schwab for detecting and stopping the fraud. You suffered no harm, no financial damage. I think you are suffering based upon internal expectations. Perhaps the issue is just the "need" for a physical card. I had a fraud issue on a GS issued apple credit card. I was outside working on a project when they alerted me. I called, five minutes later had a new CC, easy peasy. Tap to pay is awesome. My understanding of things is that there is better fraud protections using CCs compared to debit cards. Inadequate cash flow = sell the property.digglersdirk wrote: ↑Fri Mar 15, 2024 2:10 am Random tidbit to add: a former landlord had an investment property. While employed, the bank considered rental income when she applied for a refinance, but when she was retired they no longer considered rental income. This was true at nearly every mortgage lender and bank. She was sadly forced to sell her investment property because she just couldn’t refinance (despite considerable cash flow).
Had she refinanced 6 months earlier, she’d still own that property.
Sounds like a poor business person.

What did you say?Lemonaid56 wrote: ↑Wed Mar 13, 2024 5:13 pm So here is something we've never encountered.
I was applying for a small loan today. DW just retired last year and I am getting a tiny disability paycheck from work. So when the loan guy asks about income it hits me that it does not look like we have any money.
On teh contrary we are and will be fine financially for a taime so we have plenty set aside.
How do you handle loans when you aren't collecting SS or a pension yet and are living on what you've saved? When they ask about income I need to know what to say.
What was the response?

Re: Charles Schwab cannot overnight a replacement debit card
Kudos to Schwab for detecting and stopping the fraud. You suffered no harm, no financial damage. I think you are suffering based upon internal expectations. Perhaps the issue is just the "need" for a physical card. I had a fraud issue on a GS issued apple credit card. I was outside working on a project when they alerted me. I called, five minutes later had a new CC, easy peasy. Tap to pay is awesome. My understanding of things is that there is better fraud protections using CCs compared to debit cards. I doubt that the person helping on the phone for a fraud issue actually has a new debit card machine on hand along with international overnight and secure shipping at the ready. They probably put in the order, it goes to a vendor, t...

Re: How long after death to transfer assets
Ok, so yesterday the adviser called to ask KYC questions, requested copy of drivers license and wanted social security numbers. These were given mid day, nothing further. Very frustrating when it literally takes minutes to open an account online with major firms.

Re: How long after death to transfer assets
I think the executor is providing the death certificate. There are or were about 10 different accounts that were TOD. Some IRAs, some annuities, and taxable accounts. 8 of them have already been distributed. The other two are with this advisor. Has anybody (hopefully executor) received funds from this "advisor?" If you are the only beneficiary for this particular account, it might be more complicated. I do not know if there is a time limit on how long it can take. I'd consider 10-60 days reasonable after they (the advisor's company) had received all paper work in good order. We had one company that was going to send us a check if we did not do something, and do it properly, to their standards, within 90 days. That would have resu...

Re: Direct Indexing Adventure
Thanks for this topic.
What are your longer term plans with this account?
I am curious what happens to short term vs long term harvesting as the year progresses.
As much TLH short term as you have done, it seems like you will be soon capped at 3k? What is the benefit for a long term larger account if one does not have short term gains?
We need this for international also, not excluding anything.

Tax loss harvesting and buying like funds
Just had a zoom meeting with Fido rep. We are expecting a follow up email discussing tax management strategies such as tax loss harvesting. We know and accept that if we sold SPY ETF and bought it back within 30 days that we do not get tax loss harvesting benefits. But what about if we sell SPY when/if the market is down, and then buy something similar like VTI? Can we harvest losses yet capture any move up without market timing? Or does the IRS not allow this based upon moving into a similar fund?
Thank you.
If allowed, does anyone do this?

Re: How long after death to transfer assets
I agree except do not have any death certificates. Executor also an heir, providing one form from one heir easier than everyone doing the same.

The beneficiaries should directly work with the brokerage. Or get their own lawyer, or take it up the customer service chain at Stonex (not Stonewall???). (that was a joke). Seriously, if there is a TOD - nothing to do with executor. Vanguard did this for me in days.

Re: How long after death to transfer assets
Thanks.
I don't get it. The advisor said last week it would be last week. Then last week he said Monday. I hate the over promise under deliver way of doing things. It is the advisor that set the expectation up.

The account in question is TODincrement wrote: ↑Tue Mar 12, 2024 8:15 amDoes OP mean "everything else that was TOD/POD" (i.e., this account is TOD/POD), or "everything else was TOD/POD" (i.e., this account is not TOD/POD)? If this account is TOD/POD, then the situation is the opposite and the asset manager may have no legal reason to respond to the executor.
All the other TOD accounts are in our bank already.

Thanks.
We know the executor. In what manner can they push along things?
And, how long can they take?
