Re: Is Calif Really That Expensive - Or Am I Missing Something?

My former large multinational corporation couldn't pay employees enough to relocate to California. They had to move operations out of that state to get employees to support formally Califiornian programs. That was well before they lost congressional seats.

Re: College cheating, what would you do?

Here's the thing.... in college everyone cheats, no different than the real world. No way, speak for yourself. I never cheated in college, and the OP's daughter doesn't either. I don't cheat in the real world either. I've already been blessed just by being alive, I don't need to take what isn't mine. Living with integrity and honor is a philosophy of life. I've told my kids its better to fail than cheat because you can recover from failure but you can only lose your integrity. Agreed! I know MANY people who didn't cheat and would never sacrifice doing the right thing for ill-gotten gain. "Everyone cheats" is a hasty generalization, or perhaps a rationalization. As my life progressed I learned to disregard the cheaters and embrace...

This may seem like a naive question, but:

Isn't Fidelity (where the bulk of my assets are kept) a lot less secure than a bank?
- No FDIC insurance (Fidelity spreads MM funds around to stay under the FDIC insurance limits. Account activity shows money deposited in several banks.)
- just one step login (username and password alone gets you in...many banks also require email or phone confirmation) (Fidelity offers 2FA login.)
- A hack compromises not only your cash account but your investments as well. (Indeed!)

I suspect most of us are in a somewhat similar situation.

We all think we would catch on to the obvious red flags, but do we really know how we would respond under stress, and fear of physical harm? These are targeted attacks where the scammers not only know your information but are also local and have people nearby to facilitate the scam (in this case, to drive a car to victim’s house to pick up the cash). In this case, they also certainly knew she had at least 50k in cash in her bank account. The gist of the story is that victim gets call from Amazon informing her she is victim of identity t...

It isn't hard to hack an unprotected router. The FBI recently hacked into a number of routers to remove state-sponsered malware. Connecting an unprotected router/device to the internet for a few seconds puts it at risk. Make sure you device is updated with current firmware and uses a strong password prior to connecting it to the outside world.

In some cases the only mitigation for an infected device to to re-load factory firmware and NOT reusing the previous password.
