Hi Everyone,
We have our Boglehead meeting tomorrow. Please come and help us restructure the meeting format to something you would find more interesting.
We'll meet in the smaller conference room which is on the right side - just pass the librarians desk but before the computer terminals.
It was suggested that the going over each step in the Boglehead Investment Philosophy was too introductory for our chapter.
I will have a list of potential discussion topics I made. ie. Tax Efficient Fund Placement. Outlook for fixed income investments. etc.
Bring 1 or 2 topics you would like to discuss at future meetings.
There are a lot of things to go over tomorrow - don't miss out.

Re: Fidelity Spartan or Vanguard plus misc. ?'s
I have a cash management account with Fidelity and I have been considering moving everything to Fidelity just to have it all under one roof. I did exactly this and am glad I did. Simplicity makes management that much easier. Once I moved everything over, I was going to try to recreate the target date fund using individual Spartan funds. I did this too. Here are the Fidelity ticker symbols for investor class shares: Fidelity Spartan Total Market Index Fund (FSTMX) Fidelity Spartan Global ex U.S. Index Fund (FSGUX) Fidelity Spartan U. S. Bond Index Fund (FBIDX) From WIKI: You can create a 3-fund portfolio using most investment companies Once I had enough I'd use the advantage shares for their lower fees. I did this too. Here are the ticker s...

Re: Anyone moved from NY?
I live in NYC and can appreciate the hassles, crowds, intensity that others take issue with. But, I also feel as if I enjoy and take advantage of the city's offerings: concerts, museums, other cultural offerings, convenience of being able to walk to places or take public transportation and not having to deal with getting around by car (cost, parking, insurance, etc.). For people who have left NY, do you miss those things? That's what I wonder about, if I were to leave. Or, if you never really take advantage of them I could see how living in NY might not seem worth the effort. Edit: to stick with NY focus of OP Living in NYC is one thing. If I'm correct, the OP is asking about moving from Long Island, which is another question altogether (t...

Re: Anyone moved from NY?
I lived on LI for 25 years. I moved out of state for a job after college. I always thought the world stopped at the GW Bridge. My sheltered attitude was "Jersey! What do I want to go to Jersey for? I've got everything I want right here". Boy, was I wrong. I have lived in Michigan, Germany, England and Baltimore. Now I live in South Carolina - where there are tons of New York retirees. You can own a new 3,500 sf home for the price of a shack on LI.

Re: Budget breakers
Insurance costs and medical costs are beyond one's control. Do not seek perfection, rather saving, loving, and living. Focus on ends- feeling of security, ability to share, aligning expenditures with values rather than means. I know someone who is grappling with financing IVF. It is safe to say that IVF is a pretty big / unexpected variable expense and was not part of her budget. What to some appears to be a tough choice (kids vs. biting into the savings rate or selling some TSM etc) others will see as a no brainer (a course correction to their Investment Policy Statement IPS). Life issues like these really make you confront head-on what is important to you. You don't need us to help you cut the trival cost from your life. You find a super...

Re: Where can I go to get a signature guarantee or Medallion
I need to add my online only bank account to my Treasury Direct account. In order to do this, I need either a signature guaranteed stamp or a medallion stamp. I have a bank account with Bank of America, but I called my local branch, and according to him, no branches do Medallion signatures. I don't have any other accounts with physical locations. What are my options? I think Fidelity branches can do this as well. At least I always go in there when I need a Medallion guarantee for their paperwork. Not sure if they would do it for other things / you're not a customer. I just called Fidelity Customer Service to find out. In addition to the Medallion signiture ryman554 gets there, they will also provide a notary signature and a signature guara...

Hi Falliable! Good question to ask. He was definately appreciative for the gesture but there are a lot of new factors in his life right now so he is still getting acclimated. Help Collecting Useful Threads for A New Boglehead
I will start by saying I did a lot of looking at existing threads before I decided to make this post. I am making a "package of threads" to give to my nephew, a new college grad, as I introduce him to bogleheads.org. This post is to ask the BH community for threads they would like new comers to be familiar or they feel will be beneficial to a new investor. This will be my second introductory try with him. The first one failed due to a poor execution strategy on my part as I "Gave Him A Fish". Since we live 800 miles apart I did all the search engine work and made him a list of every "New College Grad" post I could find (~40 of them) then hyperlinked them to a file and emailed them to him . I am sure I over whel...

Re: Which is King: Income Stream or $ Invested
$4mil in CDs. I don't trust income stream things - insurance companies go bellyup, pensions get reduced. You realize that banks go out of business right? You keep your money in non-FDIC insured banks? We're talking about $4 Million, were you planning to use 16 separate banks? Fidelity has a pretty cool feature on there website to create CD ladders. You can get your CDs through them and hold them all in your brokerage account. They will do all the work of splitting your money up into 16 banks ($4 Million in this case) so your money is all FDIC insured. Granted the interest rated is a few basis points lower then the best one you will find on bankrate.com etc but it sure beats managing 16 different banks. And to answer the question, I would t...

An Accurate Finance Article on Yahoo
A good article posted on Yahoo about the negative impact that fees and the positive impact low cost index funds have on your portfolio. Most bogleheads could have written the article themselves so the content is not the impressive part. The most impressive part about the article is that they posted it on their homepage, a high traffic location, for non-bogleheads to see. Most articles like this are tucked away in Yahoo-Finance somewhere.

Since new people are contacting me each week wanting to join GMBH I reserved a much larger room for our 2nd meeting. Thanks to everyone for making our kick-off meeting so successful. You are more than welcome to bring your spouse/friend/coworker/neighbor etc but it is really important that you send me an RSVP with the # of people in your group so I can make sure there are enough seats. Send your RSVP to: greenvillebogleheads@gmail.com. There was a really good mix of investors (novice as well as tenured). Everyone's point in their investment journey will be different bu...

I made the investment in the ice breaker version of this for the ice dams in the MI winters. The product name is gutter glove.
I am very satisfied. Look at http://www.gutterglove.com/ Pricier then the Costco style but worth it.

Greenville Metro Bogleheads Chapter Established
Good News Everyone! The Greenville Metro Bogleheads (GMBH) chapter has been established. This will be in Greenville, South Carolina - not to be confused with the 31 other Greenvilles in the USA. Mel Lindauer has added us to google maps and we are officially known as chapter #56. GMBH will support the whole upstate area (Greenville, Clemson, Anderson, Spartanburg, Columbia etc) but I would not be surprised at all if we have visitors from North Carolina/Georgia too. This will be more then just a quarterly email list. When we get fully running it will be like a quarterly Bogleheads Conference (right here in SC) where you can meet people, share experiences, ask questions or just listen. People want this and you will be amazed how far they will ...

Re: How fast to contribute 403b
Technically it does but it also puts constraints on your cashflow for current operating expenses like food. Save for the future but don't kill the present.Steady wrote:they said they did this so after it was maxxed they were done contributing and that made their take home pay more.

How stable is your job? If you risk losing the 403b pack it fast. Other wise slow and steady is just fine.

Re: Buying a House without a Real Estate Agent
I bought my 1st house in 1999 FSBO. I knew very little about how real estate agent fees worked and thought I was doing the right thing and would prevail financially. I just bought my 2nd home 6 months ago and I used a realtor. When buying I would use a realtor. In SC, the seller pays both the buyers agent (3%) and the sellers agent (3%). Buyer pays neither realtor so unless you tell the seller to knock 3% of the sale price since you are not using an agent then you are not making a financial gains. However the seller has the potential to save 6%. Buyers agent will also come up with a form repair list to help negotiate the repairs from the inspection. Beware of the the buyer helping negotiate the sale price. That is dependant on the integrity...

Re: High Income Earner in Need of a Financial Plan!!!!!
Hello Flip Flop Living. Thank you for your response. Hello Snowboarder: Good luck helping your friend. All of us have friends that we would like to to help out a bit... Which is precisely why I wanted to have independent BH opinions rather then just express my own, which could be potentially looked at as a bias opinion. Something doesn't quite add up in the numbers income of 40 to 50k a month and expenses are only 20k a month. I am using $42k/month as the Gross Income and the $20k are the fixed expenses only. There are other plans outside of a SEP or in lieu of that would allow greater contributions. Please, please, please do tell me what allows greater contributions then the SEP…… For the 200k in the SEP start investing now. "When the...
