Re: Three Days in DC
Washington DC is one of the most beautiful cities in the world and if you are going to be here anytime in the next 6 weeks, it will be in full bloom for you and your family. As George Will pointed out years ago in one of his Spring columns, Lady Bird Johnson got hundreds of thousands of tulip and daffodil bulbs planted in perfect display everywhere. If you have spring allergies, bring your allerest or Flonase or extra handkerchiefs because it is pollen time. To the excellent suggestions given above, I would add a vote for the Kennedy Center http://www.kennedy-center.org to see a free Millennium Stage production (every day at around 5:45pm) (you can check what is scheduled on the website). The cafeteria upstairs on the roof is good, reasonab...

Re: What to do about unresponsive attorney holding retainer
This is really simple. Draft a specific review of the matter, refine and tighten it, send it to the attorney by certified mail, return receipt with a copy indicated on the face of the letter addressed to the Bar Association of New York. The letter should demand specific action. If it seems right based on the facts, request a certified check in the full amount of the retainer payable to your relative plus any papers that she had provided to the attorney. Put a specific time limit on the requested response, 5 days or better 10. I would discourage her from wishful thinking or disappointment that she has to start all over because that would likely just dig the ditch deeper. Whatever personal challenges that the attorney may be suffering in his ...

I still find a lot of value in CR although as we age we are not the big consumers we once were. It is true you can often find information on whatever you are looking for for free on the Internet, the information is often biased in some way. CR is truly unbiased and they do research and testing of the products they review in their magazine. It gives me more information about what features to consider when buying a car or TV or something else as well as the best companies to buy from. It is much simpler for me to have my own subscription rather than to trudge off to the library every time I want to look at something in CR. Convenience trumps cheap for me. Agree, enthusiastically. But there's more: quality trumps cheap even more. CR is honest...

Any experience as Uncle or Aunt in using 529?
Many of my nieces and nephews in Ohio are young and would be 1st generation college students when they reach that age, so I will be helping them. Do any of you have experience or advice about establishing and operating a Section 529 Fund for the benefit of numerous potential beneficiaries who are nieces and nephews? They range in age from 6 weeks young to 16 years. I have not consulted my CPA about this yet and would like to be knowledgeable about it before going on the meter with him. I have read other postings here about 529 but need to focus on the relationship issue. Thanks!

No stress. they do it all of the time and know what they are doing. Best of good wishes for a smooth transition.

+1 on encouraging your son to think, decide and act on his own, hopefully with sincere interest in your counsel and advice! With respect for all of the helpful advice above, I have a different thought: If he is going to live and work in CA, or if he is otherwise legally required to file, of course, file. If not, stay away. Once you get into the 'system' of a state's tax authorities, he may continue to receive unwelcome communications even if there is no basis for the state asserting its authority. It could result in substantial expense.

Congratulations on receiving so generous a gift. The first question your Board needs to decide is whether these funds, or part of them, are intended to comprise the corpus of an "endowment" account. If the intention is to fund your Foundation's operations and charitable purposes for many generations in the future, that would point you in a fairly clear direction. If the intention is to give it all or most away for your charitable purposes in a few years, that points you in a different direction. Either way, structure is vitally important: committee of qualified people vested by the whole Board, in writing, to develop a formal, written Investment Policy Statement, have it ratified by the whole Board, in writing, then invite proposa...

You're a good guy to be asking for your friend.
There are wills and then there are estate plans. It could be that there are serious steps that he could take that would reduce time, expense, trouble, uncertainty. Get rid of out-of state real estate (by quit-claiming it to his wife? child?) put all shares of stock in street accounts so that dealing with stock certificates is off the table. There may be several steps that only estate planning experts know about and for a few thousand dollars or less, depending on where he/they live, it could bring great peace of mind. Good luck to your friend and his family.

Along the Atlantic coast in the summer, you will want to pay attention to the hurricane activity. the season is June 1 to the end of November with highest risk in August and September. One year, we were all set to enjoy Cape Cod in August but shifted to the OuterBanks in NC when the weather intervened. If you make advance reservations anywhere, consider whether they have a hurrican cancellation policy, or buying your own trip insurance. As to destinations, I would add Fenwick Island in Delaware. It is not an island but is a relatively quiet, family oriented stretch between Ocean City, MD and the mating ground for 20's/30's guys and gals known as Rehobeth Beach, DE. Nice wide beach. Excellent fun things for kids to do nearby and movie houses...

One of the most memorable sights, among many, is the amazing Banyan Tree in Lahaina. Its main core is huge, stands 6 stories high or so and has a dozen or more off-spring trunks, all together taking up nearly an acre in a city park. Also, if you drive up to see the sunrise at the volcano, bring extra blankets because it is really cold up there at that hour! But an incredible, unforgetable sight. Have a great visit!

Great subway system plus taxi, buses and Uber to take you any place that is off the subway system. 1. Write your story out succinctly in a demand letter (a real letter, not email) to your insurance company.

Save for 25 years = $1million?
A nephew is 25 years of age, no college, good job with fairly good pay at a Fortune 500 company. He works hard and they like him; he had received several raises and promotions. He is not yet married and has no children. At a recent family gathering, he asked me how much he would have to save each month to have $1million at age 50. I promised to get back to him with some ideas. I am very glad to hear him thinking like this. This Bogleheads family has so many capable, experienced people, so I ask for help in finding a formula to develop some scenarios. I am assuming that he would start out the 1st year at about $400 per month and increase it each year. And i assume that he would put it all, or nearly all in Total Stock Market. I also assume t...

Re: Best smartphone in 2014?
If you are interested in an objective, clear, deep review of smartphones on the market, I have found none better than that smart, sharp, articulate kid with the youtube channel, Marquis Brownlee. Here's a link to his review of upcoming smart phones. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D0mCG1BeZCo

Re: Buying new binoculars
+1on Image Stabilization. I have Canon 10x30is and love this product. Here's a quick link to the Amazon offering: http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_ss_i_ ... Any experience with LifeSpan TR800 DT5 Treadmill Desk?
Research has turned up this treadmill desk and the reviews on Amazon are very favorable, but I trust opinions offered by fellow Bogleheads more. I am retired in mid 70's, fit and active and I intend to stay that way, so I am seriously considering moving this computer up on a treadmill desk of some sort and walking several hours a day while doing computer work. Any thoughts on this would be greatly appreciated before I rearrange this home office! Thanks,
