out of town, purse stolen, starting new in NYC

I was visiting Washington, DC when I became a victim of crime recently, with my car, phone, id, credit cards, keys, everything stolen, and got free of the crime wearing the same clothes for weeks. Someone changed my password and address at Vanguard. I'm single and my siblings and parents are dead. I think I am going to solve this myself. I'm looking for ideas. I ran into an unexpected problem ; two factor authentication and not having my phone. No financial page likes me using library devices. Western Union wants id. Does it make sense to visit Vanguard in Malvern? Tomorrow I am taking $17.50 to DMV in a money order to get a replacement drivers license. I'm starting fresh in NYC where I own property but someone else is living in it. Does an...

What did I learn from the 2/24 sell off? (And 25)

1) It was time to invest money in my Roth that was in a money market account.

2) I don't think I want to buy a house this year, because I am not interested in protecting the cash I put aside for it. I'm going to buy sales in equities.

Re: Where to take out a Roth 401k loan?

To clarify, I have a Roth IRA. To take a loan from the Roth, I'm planning to transfer part of it to a new solo Roth 401k. TD Ameritrade was my intended transfer place (they do loans from solo Roth 401k), but they are being bought by Schwab. I'm curious if anyone knew of another company to set up the solo Roth 401k. I realize I forgot to say I'm planning to set up a solo (individual) Roth 401k. Don't know how to edit the subject!

Roth 401k. Plan to take a five year loan. Want to know where to take it out, since, for example, Vanguard doesn't allow loans and E-Trade only allows traditional 401k loans, not Roth 401k loans.

I wanted to know what people learned about where to do it.

Thanks.

Just an fyi re the Honda CRV. Make sure the driver's seat is comfortable if you and your DW are looking at one. I drove a family member's Honda CRV many times and it was nowhere near as comfortable as the Subaru Outback and Forester. It was just way too big no matter what I tried to do to the seat.

No, you're not an idiot. A piece of info re Subaru you probably already know. It is ALL negotiable. Have fun with your purchase. The Legacy was one of my favorite cars, and kept me safe when an idiot collided with it. Airbags worked. Got a surprisingly good insurance payment on my totaled car. I own a Forester now.

Just FYI: I think $30k for a 2019 is high. 2020 top version of the Legacy runs at $29,745.

Best Way to Receive/Handle Money at Real Estate Closing

I bought a house with cash four years ago and I am selling it to a cash buyer next week. I will be receiving a lot of cash, probably first wired to my lawyer.

What is the best way to handle the money after the closing? My goal is to put it in my Vanguard money market account. I planned to deposit it in my local bank and make an ACH transfer. Is there a better way?

I read a few paragraphs of this long thread, but decided to post because my experience might be like someone else's or just to share a story.

Four years ago, I bought a three family building in a northeastern city and lived on the first floor. (I had a single family home about two hours away, too). I decided to sell the property this year, four years later.

To my surprise I sold the property for 58% more than I paid for it. During this time, I had a mix of tenants, some very reliable and others I had to evict. For me, the money was nearly all in the appreciation of property value.

Road Trip: After the West Coast

In mid June I will be leaving Glacier National Park in Montana to begin my trip home to northern NY. I will have already been to Yellowstone and the Tetons, as well as many other places in California and in the southern US. I am looking for side trips to break up my long drive and ideas on what to see along the way, generally traveling in the north or north/central US. I've only planned I will be traveling through Ohio to visit a friend. I traveled the southern route on my way to California and it was a joy.

Any suggestions are welcome! I am traveling with two dogs who enjoy hiking, but also enjoy sleeping while I'm out. I like historical places, beautiful views, food, cultural activities, and being active.

Thanks for the help!

I'm on a road trip now from the Northeast US to California and back. One of my favorite places so far is Amarillo, TX. I do not know where you are beginning, but the area near Amarillo has the Palo Duro Canyon and a museum dedicated to the Texas Panhandle and Plains. I've been to the Grand Canyon two times (including on this trip), but there is something unique about Palo Duro. If you can get to Antietam National Battlefield in Sharpsburg, MD, it's a fascinating place. Harpers Ferry, WV isn't far away and worth a visit. (The Appalachian Trail Visitors Center is there, too.) Both of these places might be off your route, but I wanted to mention them. If you want a detour, visit the Flight 93 National Memorial in Shanksville, PA. It's two hour...

Re: Water seepage in basement

Hello all, Our home is 30'years old and has an unfinished section, and a finished section, in the basement. In the unfinished section, we get water seepage where the floor meets the wall when we get heavy rain. It does not happen with snow melt, nor does it happen with gentle showers. The seepage occurs over an area of about 10 feet linearly from left to right. It does not occur higher up on the wall. This has been occurring for years and I usually just patiently shop vac up the water when it happens if too much comes in. It never gets over to the finished section, but in theory it could if I was not home for an extended time, and I don't want it getting under the Pergo floors in that section. Also, we do not have a sump pump, and that is ...

I'd look for an AirBNB that allows pets. Once you have a good experience, you will have more because word travels about you and your family.

My German shepherd and Australian shepherd love my Subaru Forester. Nothing too high to jump into and it's a comfortable place to lay down. I crack the windows. I am in the Northeast USA and on hot summer days I park under trees in a parking lot, even if there is no designated parking space, and crack the windows. I heard this is not enough in other places.

In mid March I have two weeks off before starting a new job and am looking for ideas on where to travel on the east coast. I will be traveling in a car with two dogs and likely staying at Airbnb locations. Right now I am considering going to New Orleans. I'd like to hear about any good trips or things to see on the way there from New York, or perhaps a different destination. I have been to D.C. many times, so I am not going there this time.

Thanks for any ideas!

Tal, Re the real estate, I have a tremendous gain on the three family and it's the right time to sell. It's two hours away and I am getting too busy to take care of the issues that come up. I also don't use the vacation property enough, so will sell it (and not buy another). I lived in my own house for over 24 years and it's time for a change. I plan to buy a townhouse in an area I like. I'm going to work as a nurse for about three years before I become a nurse practitioner. My goal has been to become a nurse practitioner, not a nurse, so I'm continuing in school part time after I become a nurse. I'm going to think through the various ways to go with loans -- student loans, 401k loans, mortgage, cash out refi. Thanks for your suggestions!

Jon H wrote: Tue Feb 06, 2018 5:38 pm What about putting your equity to work for you?

Can you get a home equity line of credit for the $85k as an option? Probably would get a better rate than the student loans.

Alternately, get a second mortgage and pay off all of your loans. Certainly it will better than 9-11% and likely better than 5-6%.

Just some thoughts.
Thank you, Jon! I am going to look into it. Right now I am renting an apartment for myself, and either renting out or selling the other properties. According to my bank, I can only get a line of credit on property I reside in. I might look into a cash out refi of $85,000 on one of the investment properties instead.

Re: Requesting Advice on Plan

Usually you can't borrow from a 401k at a previous employer. Are you going to be still working at your current employer while going to school? Or are all of you 401k assets at previous employers? Taking out a $70k mortgage seems MUCH less risky than a 401k loan. Paying yourself the interest also means you have $70k not in the marking earning the market return. Where does the $975 a month while you're in school come from, the $510k from selling property? Why not invest it all at once? How about the $2975 per month after school? Is that all from the job you plan to have? That is $37,500 per year. A quick search shows about $100k as a salary, is that about right? Banking 37% percent would be a high savings rate. Is the pension based on your c...

Re: Requesting Advice on Plan

Thanks Watty. I will be a nurse in a few months, and then months later begin a part time program to become a nurse practitioner while working as a nurse. I plan to work for the state at one of its teaching hospitals, because I already am vested in the state pension system from another job. I plan to work for as long as I enjoy it. The two previous generations in my family have people who worked for enjoyment long after they needed to do it for money. I think that will be me too.

Mostly I am trying out ideas about how to pay off the loans, and latest idea is pour rent money into it, then sell the rental property.

Re: Requesting Advice on Plan

Thanks for the questions.

First, fixing boredom took longer than it sounds. I tested my new path and I'm confident it's right.

I don't have any mortgages on my properties, and right now don't want one. My sole exception is a plan to take out a $70,000 loan from a 401k so I am paying myself and then the rest of the purchase price from property sales. I'm selling all of them, but the 5-plex.

My thinking on 85k in student loans is since I want to keep the 5-plex, I'd use that income for most of it, then sell that building too and invest the funds.

I have fed loans too, at 5-6%, but the bulk is 9-11%.

I purchased the Outback after driving and comparing it with Forester and Impreza, and the main difference was the drive. The Outback has a nice drive, very smooth. I drive a Forester now and have what I believe is an oil burn issue with a regular highway commute and always needing oil. I wanted the Forester because it is a little taller and mattered for moving things. With Subarus, you have to watch the towability -- when you want to hitch something to it. You really can't. Subarus don't have the power to tow.

I went to Maine last year and plan to go back. I went to Acadia, but to the smaller part -- Acadia includes former military areas now. The main part is heavy touristy but the less traveled part is wonderful. Each morning I went to a park ranger led program about the area. One evening a friend and I went to a stars on the beach program, with about 200 other quiet people laying on the beach listening to the ranger point out the many things to see in the stars.

Apart from that, rent bikes and ride around. Stop at a seafood shack for lunch. It's a great way to spend three or four days.

I believe people should do with their money what they choose. This is most important.

But...... I personally know that leaving most or an equal share to a "better off" sibling can leave a lot of resentment. In my family experience, the better off sibling (married to a millionaire wife) does not "help" but thinks everyone is or should be like him.

My parents have a lot of money. I have a disabled sibling and they set up a special needs trust. The non disabled share equal percentages. My wealthy sibling set it up.

I love my parents. I don't love their money. I will give it away.

Re: How should I name my home Wi-Fi network?

I didn't use it myself, but when my Mac showed me the networks available I found one of them ingenious: home. The network was called home.

I don't like to use a name that people can connect to me easily, after many hackings into my email. Sometimes the obvious is the best.

Re: John Bogle's Don't Peek Challenge

Not a chance. I have too many transfers in and out at irregular times and it would be irresponsible not to read messages about them and check up on things.

Re: Loans from 401k -- back door investing?

P.S. Etrade told me there are no fees or costs to do this other than the interest I pay back into my own account. My 401k is currently with Vanguard, but I am moving it so I can do this. (Vanguard does not allow loans.) I am a moderately conservative person and this struck me as the right way to go in my situation. The only cost is paid to me. I win.

I agree. Thanks for the reminder.
