Off the top of my head I would say:
Taylor Larimore because he sums it up with no fluff - gets to the point and has vast experience and he also learned from J. Bogle which helps all of us.
Stemikger because he spent a lot of time and effort to gain his experience for himself and to help others. He seems to try very hard and passes his knowledge off to us.
nedsaid because he puts his heart into explaining so much that he has learned.
Larry Swedroe because he unselfishly devotes some of his time away from his financial business to help us.
All four answer the private questions which really helps me a lot. There are others but these people come to mind readily.

Re: "Goldman's Bear Market Indicator Shows Crash Dead Ahead"
J. Bogle was so very right when he said "Don`t Peek" and W. Buffett was so very right when he said "market forecasters make fortune tellers look good." Who cares what comes out of Goldman`s mouth and writings. It surely won`t help the average investor one bit. Goldman will not be and has not been charitable to the investing public. If Goldman really knew when the bear market would be here do you think Goldman would tell you ?

Re: U.S. stocks in freefall
It`s truly amazing that with all the trouble and threats in this world that the stock market shrugs it off and goes higher. That`s a good lesson for the readers of this website to not be influenced by the daily news in managing your portfolio. Sometimes the daily news influences the markets and sometimes it does not. Again no peeking wins the prize and so does Bogle`s statement "stay the course." Easy to say but hard to do and necessary to do.
This is a wonderful thread and I for one hope it continues.

Re: Patience is very important to profit from the stock market
It`s so natural when people hear on tv, radio, friends etc. that the DOW went up today they think that their net worth increased and they feel good. But if they see that their net worth decreased that day and other days when the market rose they do not feel that good feeling and when it`s repeated over and over they begin to question their own decisions about their stock and bond assets. When the black swan appears and the DOW drops a lot along with hearing and seeing what negatives the "experts" are saying about the market then it becomes very hard for these investors to hold on to what they currently own all the time viewing the decrease in their net worth. Ain`t human nature wonderful ! Buy the whole haystack and do not PEEK or...

Re: What is the largest percentage of your total portfolio value that you have exchanged to rebalance?
By rebalancing you are controlling your risk level that you previously set up in your IPS. What`s so wrong with that ? Seeing what you sold going up higher in value after rebalancing hurts emotionally and gets your greed surfacing. That`s why investing correctly is simple yet hard to do. Warren Buffett has the same problem as I saw in an interview with Becky Quick on utube. He didn`t appear to be emotionally hurt though. After all he made a lot on the transaction that probably eased any emotional pain he may have experienced.

nedsaid, it`s perfectly ok to rebalance to selling stock and buying more bonds. Isn`t that in your IPS ? It will work out fine as it`s supposed to. It`s never easy emotionally to take some of the gains and add to the under performer.

Patience is very important to profit from the stock market
I listened to an interview the other day and when the subject of tracking error came up I became all ears. The tracking error costs investors enormous sums of money in times past and most probably will in the future. An example would be in the past 6 yeas or so the emerging markets were for all intents and purposes flat in price. How many readers of this website initially bought that asset class 6 years ago and as the days, months and years went by finally got so frustrated that it was under performing and sold out. The same thing goes for the international asset class also. It seems like the financial planner people and investment writers say diversify so you can be in a bull market somewhere probably to ease your nerves so you hang in the...

Buying on the dips hmmm! A sure thing hmmm. One day and don`ask me when but one of those dips will be the beginning of a real bear market. I do remember this same sort of thinking "buy on the dips" in 2000, when it looked so easy to make money. It`s like musical chairs or even a Charles Ponzi scheme. Remember to use your rebalancing bands that were set up in your IPS. I do get tired hearing it`s the only game in town since the banks pay so little interest.

Thank you for your reply. I think everyone is the same yet different. I think I`ll take back the bottle of probiotics tomorrow as the store manager agreed to and continue putting sauerkraut on my salads and eat maybe 2 pickles a day for a while to build up the good bacteria in the gut again. The doctor just called and said the fermented foods were fine to build up the good bacteria but it takes longer. Live and learn I guess. I learned from reading today that Activa was the best for the live cultures.

Re: U.S. stocks in freefall
I hate to say this but it`s my opinion from the above yield chart that the stock yield will most probably rise a lot which means that the U.S. market will fall a lot to get the stock yields up a lot. This also means to me that the bond yield will fall a lot and subsequently the bond prices will most assuredly rise. I have for the last few years felt that stock investing was becoming too popular in this Country and as a contrarian that`s not a good signal. Something`s going to pop. I believe, realizing all that , that the long bond is the place to be invested in along with gold ( which the Bogleheads hate ) and that the emerging markets will rise substantially. Just think all this over and see if it makes sense to you. It will take some time...

I really think the best post I ever read here was when I signed up and read Taylor Larimore analyzing the construction of the 3 fund portfolio and his reasons for it right from the beginning. I still feel it is priceless. I`m sure that post has helped a lot of people if they implemented it and stuck with it. I also like the consumer issues section as it helped me in purchasing worthwhile items and saving a lot of potential aggravation. This website enables us to learn from other peoples experiences. This is exactly the portfolio listed by Alan Roth on the lazy portfolio on marketwatch.com ; the second graders one. Look at the results but realize that was in the past. I don`t see how anyone could possibly tell you how to best inflation by 5 % every year. That`s totally unrealistic. The less switching in your portfolio you do will most probably result in better returns. History proves that.

J. Bogle says invest we must no matter what. Waiting for a correction is foolhardy because at what level in the correction do you buy in ? It`s not logical to me and will most likely prove more expensive waiting for a correction. If you have the money then invest period. Time in the market not timing is the mantra.

How about using a home equity loan to pay your mortgage in full ? The interest rate would be lower I think although I do not know what the interest rate would be today. I don`t think you can deduct the interest on your taxes though.

Re: I did it and feel great about it (paid off mortgage)
In order to get the mortgage paid off sooner and not pay more money each month speak to a bank representative about paying 1/2 the mortgage payment every 2 weeks. It lessens the time period to pay and it also lessens the total interest paid. There`s no extra charge for this. You have to fill out some papers with the lending institution. If you change your mind and want to go back to the previous payment way once a month there`s no charge. You can`t loose. I just did this this week.

Re: How much international stock? A suggestion.
It appears that a number of folks on this website forget and/or don`t know about reversion to the mean. They seem dissatisfied with the tracking error between U.S. and international and I would venture a guess they have become closet performance chasers as they are short on patience. I believe a remedy for this is once again "don`t peek." If your thought out plan is to have international then stick with it as your day will come. Remember that VWO started under performing VTI at the end of 2014. Aren`t we supposed to buy the weak asset class for the best value for our money ? Don`t look for excuses to change your IPS. As for Taylor the taxes did make a big difference for him to do what he did by giving up the undervalued internatio...

With global funds when foreign stocks occupy less than half the portfolio the investor can only deduct the payment of foreign taxes. If you purchase an etf that has only foreign stocks the investor can take the foreign tax as credits which is more desirable. I do not need bonds as I receive social security and a govt. pension. I`m fortunate in that respect.

possible capital gains thrown off on VTI from VTSMX / VTSAX
Has anyone read Understanding Exchange Traded Funds dated 2007, by Archie M. Richards, Jr. especially page 92 ? It is written there that "By combining an ETF with a corresponding index fund Vanguard runs the risk that the sales of portfolio stocks by the index fund will cause capital gains to be passed out to the associated ETF. The net asset value of the Total Stock Market Index Fund ( VTSMX) not counting the share occupied by the ETF, is 12 times larger. As a result, the shareholders may suffer adverse tax consequences created by the larger index fund." The problem is the CORRESPONDING INDEX FUND. Of course this will hurt the tax efficiency which is very high now.
