Re: Family Calendar
We use two methods, both mentioned.
1) Large dry erase white board calendar hanging in kitchen. Its beyond efficient as some or all of us at once are there and can quickly agree and see schedules, conflicts, reminders, etc.
2) When we are all away from each other and remote, then Google calendar comes into play.
Its the perfect combination. I think either one alone wouldn't be nearly efficient as the combination.

This is a hilarious thread.
I go from visions of retiring in beautiful, sunny Costa Rica to thinking that no, maybe I should just stay here in Lancaster PA area and retire cheap. Ehh...I prefer the Costa Rica idea, unless I adopt my neighborly Amish style of living in which case I’ve indeed accomplished the ‘cheap’ factor.

Gobs of research can be done online for BG and Williamsburg. Typical hotels can be found with some good deals. Some personal thoughts/ideas here: -You could nail it real good with timing regarding your kids to practically avoid lines at BG rides. Not sure when schools start for your kids and Virginia kids…but you see where I’m going here. -Yankee Candle Factory nearby is a must. It’s immense, a site to see. Outlets too for further shopping deals. +1 for Pierces. Very unique BBQ sauce. Too me it’s a cross between the typical Northern BBQ sauce most are accustomed too and the vinegary NC sauce. It has hints of cinnamon and cherry (I believe). A must try if you are a BBQ junkie. A nice “change of pace” sauce for me. Try the chili too. Instead ...

For the past year I've had the same rep in my town come by my house I'd say a total of 15 times and has called on a few occasions. I eventually met with him one evening to official try and tell him NO. Sort of worked as he still calls on occasion. No house visits anymore.
Funny thing, when I met him in his office he immediately show cased himself as a family man and showed his dozen or so pictures on his office wall of family pictures in Disney World. It was very cheesy and goofy (pun intended).

5. I go to the gym 4-5 times per week. This is not nearly enough by itself - I was doing that before I lost the weight. I see far too many people who seem to think they can get by on only an exercise program, but keep in mind that each session burns only a few hundred calories at best. When I first joined a gym 30 years ago, after finishing a workout, the trainer said to me "congratulations, you just burned off a cookie". However, the exercise is still very important for maintenance and other benefits, so definitely get some exercise. + 1000 Convinced that my wife losing 61 pounds wouldn't have happened on her Weight Watchers program alone. What is your company? Or, what is your career path/intent? I "have" a green belt certification via my previous employer and from an online course thorugh Villanova U. My boss was a black belt. In regards to my first question, if you are in the quality manufacturing field then the statistical experience for optimizing the manufacturing process is very valuable (again, generally speaking because i don't know what you do). If you're looking for the lean and 5S methodology six sigma is also beneficial as it captures that, but for lean there are gobs of 'side' certifications you could get just for that an avoid the more intensive six sigma cert. Lean is not rocket science, but the six sigma statistical aspect somewhat is in my opinion....

I'm having flashbacks of another operation called 'American Business Financial Services' out of Bala Cynwyd (Philidelphia) back in the mid 90's. Certificates were offered much higher than the average CD. I invested. Made a huge chunk (relatively speaking) and then they caved and some people got hosed.

I agree, keep the pension. That is a very good monthly payout relative to the lump sum, granted there is no survivor ship.
A lot of pension lump sum threads these days. I'm in a similar boat. Just offered a lump of 27500 versus $545 monthly. 43, married with kids. Leaning towards keeping the pension.

Re: Pension – Lump Sum Rollover or Keep it?
Monthly payouts at 65 but could take lump sum at 55 and there is %50 survivorship.
So I think it would be fairer to say 10 year the values are equivalent, roughly rather than the 4 years.
Thanks
That was the quick and dirty calc I did up front, but I don't think that is representative. If I take that lump sum now and assume %4 annual return, i will have about 60 K in 20 years (62 age). If I then take the 549 a month it will be around 6600 a year so over 10 years it would be 66K.I would take the monthly pension.
27,518 / 549 / 12
It will only take 4 years to accumulate the lump sum that you are being offered.
So I think it would be fairer to say 10 year the values are equivalent, roughly rather than the 4 years.
Thanks

Pension – Lump Sum Rollover or Keep it?
Hi all.
I’m about to turn 43, my wife is 41. We just received a lump sum option from our pensions for working at the same company and I’m not sure what to do. On a scale from one to ten we are about a 7 health wise. We have two kids and are in ‘good shape, generally speaking from our 401ks/IRAs. Here are the numbers
Lump Sum (me)
$ 27,518
Monthly Pension Payout (me)
$549
Lump Sum (her)
$ 24,713
Monthly Pension Payout (her)
$505
I’m thinking lump and rollover to IRAs.
Thanks for any advice.

Get written proof as to why you are being let go. If it was a ‘reduction in force’ and broad scale and not specific to your performance, that’s what you want. An official memo from HR, you are entitled to that. Or a past email, print that out.
This will come in nicely for any future interviews.
I’ve been laid off twice. The first time they generously provided a memo without me asking. The second time I asked for one. No one works at the same corporation for more than 10 years these days.

I may not follow completely what you're trying to do, but you can indeed play videos directly on your TV from your laptop wireless via Google Chrome and the Chromecast. Open Chrome and drag the video file directly into the browser while synced to the Chromcast. You may need to bump the video quality down in the options menu of Chromcast so it doesn't stutter....Chromecast is useless because it cannot stream local content

I have a 6 D-Cell Maglight. Yes, resting it on your shoulders walking around is intimidating looking to possibly deter someone. However, it is bigger in diameter than people think and gripping it firmly enough for a swing is difficult even for my above average size hands. To put it another way, I rather have my Taylor Made 9-iron resting on my shoulders than the Maglight. If you're willing to carry the weight, you're looking for the good old Maglite. Put it on your shoulder - shine into eyes - bash the head. If needed, bash again, they'll be disoriented for a while.

I'm currently eying up Nebraska's plan, quite a diversified list of choices with their age based plans.According to WSJ online the list of states that allow state tax deduction for plans from another state is Arizona, Kansas, Maine, Pennsylvania and Missouri. Also there are the 16 states with no state tax deduction (sometimes due to lack of state income tax). So residents of those 21 states can go shopping based on fees.

Re: Fee only financial advisor
You can't compare a perfectly disciplined unemotional managed account to what an investor uncomfortable with buying their own investments well do based on costs. No way. You have to compare the cost of mistakes, inattention, and emotion to the tangible one percent delta (not 1.6). Not saying they should use the adviser at all, but there needs to be a fair comparison as well as some board recognition that everyone doesn't fit the diy model. And the cost of the wrong person going diy is larger than the fee. This is an excellent point. Lets face it, our forum here has always been a bit biased towards low cost diy approaches. For the most part, I personally am on board with that. However, the OP hints heavily to wanting advisement in some shap...

$2700 for Advisor??
$2700 for a one-time fee only adviser. Woah! Help, this is my first 'reach out' to a financial adviser. I'm trying to stick with fee only advisers. (background): I recently called a local advisor firm to get a quote for a comprehensive assessment of my household financial situation. Comprehensive being not only portfolio allocation, but insurance, debt, etc. The whole shibang. Honestly, I have put a lot of faith in passive, Boglehead investing. So I’m confident on the portfolio end but at the age of 41, a recent house purchase, and two kids approaching college I’d like a professional opinion on ‘how I’m doing’ overall. $2700 for up to 7-hour face-to-face, paper exchange meeting(s) is what they quoted. That seems outrageous. I can’t remember...

Re: Thoughts on Company Stock as % of Portfolio
I would limit it to %5 of portfolio, if that, just for 'play money.
I personally do not have any company stock, I did at one point however and sold it simply because you don't know if the CEO turns out to be decade long pedophile and the stock tanks and never recovers. Fortune 500 doesn't buy you anything. You have zero control. Too risky in my opinion.

Re: What do you wish you had learned sooner?
Why did I buy that brand new Dodge Dakota sport pickup at $18000 in 1994 and instead purchased a much lesser, used vehicle and invested the rest. I was 23 at the time. I'm 41 now.

Re: madsinger monthly report (April 2013)
Brad, another big thank you from myself. It has been awhile since I showed my appreciation. You realize that you have been at this since at least October of 2007. Looking at my excel records, that is the date I literally started cutting/pasting your data in a file along with my retirement folios. That’s approaching seven years now! Every month since then I’ve been diligently doing this. The portfolio data you post serves as a quick benchmark to compare against mine. I wanted express my gratitude openly on the forum rather than a PM.
