Re: Best watch for around $5,000?

One thing I didn't know about Rolexes is they need to be serviced annually! Expensive. I purchased my ladies in Hong Kong mid- 80's. Paid $2k for 18k with 18k non-rolex presidential band. Beautiful, but would rather have the variety of an inexpensive quartz. Wearing stainless Guggi I bought on EBay for $100 and love it.

I do love a men's blue Submariner and would be tempted to buy a used one for the hubby.

Re: Anybody figure out the "new mattress" game yet?

Our original mattress was a king-sized "Never Flip" from Englander (made in MA). The stopped making those. We ended up with a Westin "Heavenly" bed. We had this bed in a room we stayed in and liked it. Two people can sleep in it and you cannot feel the other person move. It is just the right soft and firm that we like. I believe Simmons makes these and you could probably pay less if your purchased their brand.

Re: The new iPad

I have been on the fence about purchasing a tablet and/or Ipad for over a year. Couldn't justify it; what would I use it for, really? Well, I realized that I read alot on my smartphone and it makes sense to have something larger and easier to read websites than that. I also figure I will get into ebooks, in fact, I have a cart full on Amazon (Bogle on Investing, etc etc) that when I compare hard copies (used) and ebooks, I would be ahead price wise on ebooks. Although I am a heavy library user, if I think I want to refer to a book afterwards, I will purchase it. Want to downsize at retirement so stacking up on paper books doesn't make sense any longer. I could possibly see myself watching a movie on the Ipad especially purchased ones that I...

Armadillo by William Boyd. A fantastic writer. Hope to read most of his stuff. Never heard of him until I looked up the author of "Any Human Heart" a PBS mini-series with one of my favorite actors, Matthew MacFayden. The write is quite prolific.

Re: what items do Bogleheads buy off Craigslist/Ebay?

Yikes, I have been buying stuff and sold a few things on Ebay for years. Designer jewelry, a 1950's peddle car for my husband (exactly like he had), clothes, shoes, cosmetics, electronic accessories, movies, books, toys, dishes. Through Craigslist we purchased a used 37' fifth wheel travel trailer and recently almost purchased a CPAP breathing machine. Breathing machines cannot be resold on eBay because you need a prescription for them but they are resold on Craigslist. I looked at this one and, unfortunately, it was a slightly different model.

Re: Fidelity Portfolio Advisory Service

I recently found this forum. All of my retirement funds are currently with Fidelity (my company's 401k is there-$200K). I have a separate rollover IRA ($135K) managed by their Portfolio Advisory Service. I have not been happy with how they managed it. I would have thought that it would have done better in 2008. I also see, as others have mentioned, that they have the money in 21 different funds. I think I have done better with my 401k they they have done with my rollover. I expected much more. I have a scheduled appointment with an advisor this week. I want to pull the rollover out of their management. How do you suggest I do it? I am not sure if I am going to transfer these funds to Vanguard (index funds) at this point. Should I just have ...

Re: Removing After Tax Money from an IRA & 401K

The IRA I set up with after-tax money is about $10K. I was going to convert to a Roth when that was available to me. Now I don't see the point. If I can withdraw without penalties (it is less than the $13K I initially deposited), I would have have a cash account. The $900 that was deposited in my work 401K was also an over-the-limit after tax money. The total of that account is $200K. I know my company allows me to do an inservice transfer to a roll-over IRA. I would like to take out the $900 and add it to a cash account. I don't mind paying taxes on the earning for that amount, if any. Currently I have a roll-over IRA with Fidelity Portfolio Advisors (for the last couple of years) and they would like to me take the in service transfer, to ...

Removing After Tax Money from an IRA & 401K

I created a separate IRA a few years ago with after-tax money (the value is still below what I started it with). I also accidentally over contributed to my 401K one year ($900). In my final years prior to my retirement, I would like to create a larger cash reserve as I don't plan on withdrawing my retirement funds until I have to (at least 3 yrs after I retire).

Can I withdraw these monies without penalty?
