Re: Comcast - lease modem/router or buy?
Has anyone had success just buying a compatible device ("wireless gateway") instead of leasing it for $10/month? Seems like you could buy a device for something like $70, which would save $50 if you were just staying for a year. Also, anyone done the self-installation kit ($15) instead of having a guy come over and set everything up ($90)? Is it easy to do, or a major pain? Agree with the earlier posters. Have been using a SB6121 for several years now. It will pay for itself in less than a year as you said. Have been a fan of the Asus Router/Wifi Gateways. Been running a RT-N66U for a few years, good coverage. Awfully bright blue LEDs though. \ You will need to call Comcast to activate your new cable modem and associate it with y...

Re: AT&T cell usage in Canada
Seamless phonecall to att retentions. Dialed 611 and at prompt said retentions and was directly connected. Was able to ask for canada roaming bonus without fuss. they also noticed that current data alotment for the family plan was below standard so bumped from 15 gig to 20 gig a month without contract.
Have been in Vancouver for a few days now. Wifi in hotel, roaming onto Rogers typically when out and about. good signal strength. Mainly google maps and google to figure out where to go so hopefully will stay under 1gb in canada. will try and post an update when next statement comes out. hopefully no surprises :/

Re: What Tax Preparers Really Charge (WSJ)
On a (semi) related note (admin, feel free to delete if too off topic. just a noob!):
Is it ever weird for you to to hand over W2s,1099-Div, 1099-Miscs, etc which your SSN emblazoned on them to a third party?
I've done my own taxes via Turbotax (relatively simple - W2 and 1099 misc, a few 1099-div's), solely for being squeamish in handing over papers that have my SSN...

Re: Profit Sharing Plan advice for new physician
An excellent question. Hopefully one of the regulars on the board will post a reply. i cruised the wiki here and didn't find much mention other than the page on CIT's (which said that profit sharing plans are eligible to invest in CIT's) which was not terribly helpful. I think it boils down to this: the profit sharing is being administered by whoever your practice group contracted with. They choose where (mutual funds, brokerages, etc) you put the money earmarked from the profit sharing. The IRS places legal restrictions on the total amounts that can be placed yearly into such a plan. http://www.irs.gov/retirement/article/0,,id=108948,00.html [correct me if i'm wrong...] the alternative to the PSP is that you would get that income as actual...

Paying Principal - Student Loans (Graduated Repayment Plan)
Longtime lurker, first time poster... My question relates to early payback of federal student loans. Background: My wife has about 60k in loans, all at 6.5% interest. We switched to the graduated repayment plan about a year ago for a variety of reasons (mainly the addl interest is less than $1000 or so over the life of the loan but it dropped the payments monthly by 400 and did not extend the loan period, our income rises at a comparable rate that the payments rise) Question: Assume we have plenty in the e-fund and are maxing out roth/401ks that we are eligible for. If I earn additional income via a side job, what is the impact of paying small lump sums to the principal as we go along (say in $20k chunks) versus saving it and then paying of...
