Replacing a water heater is not rocket science. HD hires licensed plumbers. Unless they are more expensive, I wouldn't give it a second thought

I retired 3 years before my wife did. Technically you're retired, but if your spouse is still working it's not retirement, you're just not working anymore. Retirement means doing what you want, when you want. As long as your spouse is still working, that doesn't apply.

Look at a Honda S2000. More fun than a Miata. You can find nice ones still around. I bought a new one in 2007, weekend top down car, and sold it 9 years later for 4K less than I paid for it.

Retired at 55, live comfortably with a defined benefit pension, never have to worry about running out of income. It was the right decision for me.

to me comfortable in retirement means owing no money, having a nest egg I'll never draw from and having 135k in fed pension compensation each year to spend as we like until we die.

This is no different than taking your car to a repair shop for "free" a 32 point inspection, whatever they find, they'll be happy to set up another appointment to repair the damage. They don't "fix it" during the inspection.

Air conditioning
Head unit - radio
Transmission
Rear wheel bushing

never charged for any of it, transmission failed last month

Just a reminder to middle aged adults co-signing for student loans. If you're left to pay federally insured student loans and don't pay them off, the Social Security Administration will deduct up to 15% of your SS monthly payment to recoup the dollars you didn't pay back.
