Re: How I use I-ORP, and who shouldn't
The challenge I found on i-orp Roth conversions is that the recommendations were heavily based on the assumed rates of return, in addition to tax efficiency. If you guessed a higher rate of return for your Roth, perhaps because of a longer-term investment horizon, i-orp will suggest high rates of conversion. While this may be logical from a linear programming perspective, it probably doesn't reflect the reality of real world asset allocations. The solution is to make sure you use the same expected return for all your account types when investigating Roth conversions. After seeing some unexpected results on Roth conversions planning runs, and chatting with James Welch (I-Orp owner), I came to to understand that if you don't model the same %...

Re: 15 month CD offer from GE Capital Retail Bank in NYT ad
Keep in mind that as of 12/14/13 GE Capital Bank does not have any ability to download (web or direct) to Quicken. I was surprised they don't offer this whereas most banks do.

I share the concern about Keyloggers, and don't know how prevalent they are. Adding multi-factor authentication, such as Lastpass' Grid Multifactor Authentication provides an additional layer of security. I've also thought of getting a ubikey, but have not done so yet.

Re: Free Stanford Course: Finance of Retirement & Pensions
I'd be interested in joining a Boglehead group for the class group assignment.swimirvine wrote:VictoriaF and I have received requests from 6 other Bogleheads requesting to be assigned to a "Boglehead Group" for the group project.
We split people up into groups based on when they sent us a message requesting to be in a group. I have sent PMs to all the people that sent us requests.
At this point, if you are taking the class and want to be in a Boglehead group please post in this thread that you are looking for a group. If I get any other requests from people I will try and connect you with each other.
Thanks!

i'd be up for another meeting as well.
BTW - there is an online course being offered by Stanford (free of charge) that some on this forum are signed up for. I'm not sure if the enrollment is still open, but I'm finding it to be quite useful.

Re: Deferred Fixed Annuity - instead of CD's
Thanks all for the feedback and suggestions - very helpful.
Here is an interesting article (may be biased) on the differences between the two:
http://www.newyorklife.com/nyl/v/index. ... 301cacRCRD
After thinking this thru, the CD's, even if they pay a bit less, they have greater flexibility should interest rates rise, plus having FDIC protections. But there are some tax advantages to the Deferred Fixed Annuity if money's are in taxable accounts. In my case the funds are in an IRA thus no real tax advantage to the Deferred Fixed Annuity.
Thanks again for help.

Re: Deferred Fixed Annuity - instead of CD's
If you are really serious about this, I would check Vanguard's link (if you have an account there) https://personal.vanguard.com/us/whatweoffer/annuities/fixed and see what they have. If they don't have this high a rate, I would wonder how your company can do it without assuming more risk. I don't know anything about these, except that some people do a 1035 exchange to them to get out of some high-cost annuities that they were sold. Annuities in general are not very popular on Bogleheads.org. I did check with Vanguard and their rates were more inline with the 5 year CD rates of around 1.7%. Their terms are the same as well, generally high surrender charges if you bail before the 5 year term, 10% withdrawal rate per year with no surrender/p...

Re: Deferred Fixed Annuity - instead of CD's
Thanks for feedback: Some thoughts on everyone's comments: - Surrender charge of 7% - yes, quite ugly if you think there is a chance you will need the money. This is long term money - not needed anytime soon. - Commissions - the brokers do make a great commission on annuities - I've "heard" that they earn 2-4% up front commission from the insurance company - the rate of 2.4% - don't see anything close to that with the 5 year cd markets - most well below - taxes at end of term - these funds are in an IRA, so it would roll back into an IRA at end of term - rising interest rates - in theory I could withdraw nearly 50% over 5 years if i withdrew 10% each year (without penalty) - contract terms - not an easy read, and that worries me -...

Deferred Fixed Annuity - instead of CD's
My broker has suggested a 5 year deferred fixed annuity as an alternative to 5 year CD's for my portion of portfolio that is not earning much in money markets and short term bond funds. It is paying 2.4% and is free of loads and annual fees. Like a CD, they take the contribution and return it in 5 years plus the accumulated interest. It also allows up to 10% withdrawals per year with no penalties if you need some liquidity.
Am I missing something, or why are not others considering these in lieu of CD's?
any comments welcome.
BTW - it is offered by New York Life and the name is New York Life Secure Term MVA Fixed Annuity II
