Re: How Much Cash Do You Keep In Your Home?

About $500, after SuperStorm Sandy and no power in the area for 11 days - cash was king. Some stores and gas stations had back-up generators, but essential no basic services like the internet. In fact, I had to lend my neighbor a couple of hundred to get stuff for his family.

I will always have cash on hand outside of emergencies to grease the palm of selected individuals - a good example is the guy that came to my home to replace my windshield - he asked if I had any discounts - I said no, he said check the yellow pages - lo and behold I saved $150 and tipped him well.

You have a lot of good comments on $$$ for a home, but I would also develop criteria you want Remember this is a starter home and maybe smaller than you want or need. Other than price, developed any criteria on the house your are seeking: Commuting Time (then draw a circle around target area and start checking out the towns) Fixer upper ?? Are you handy? Number or Baths, Bedrooms, Parking etc For me they were as follows: • No major fix up as I am handy but not skilled enough to do it myself • Good school district - easier to sell as you will resell it • No double yellow-line - indicates high traffic area, tougher to resell • No corner property (too many exposed sides. more maintenance, potential more road noise) • No sump pump or drain...

Review the corporate policy for severance, vacation time, RSUs or other forms of compensation. Although I was not laid off, I took a voluntary severance package (lump sum) and I negotiated staying one until all my vacation time accrued; thus I got another 6 weeks of pay.

I personally would not put the reason for my resignation. Just put the effective date. If they ask, I would elaborate with very specifics why you feel you are under compensated, but remember do not burn bridges as you may run across them in the future. For me, although not identical, I took a voluntary severance package after 30 years. Everyone was surprised I applied as everyone knew I love my job. For 27 years, I worked with fabulous trustworthy people and was well compensated. Compensation was based on return to company (% revenue over plan). He got acquired and experienced 3 years of hell - poor management, no raises, no bonuses as I was considered "highly compensated" under their band structure. When I told them the reason, t...

There are a lot of good suggestions for Istanbul. It you are not going with a tour, get a guide. Secondly, if you go the Grand Bazaar - take a picture of the entrance where you entered. There are over 20 entrances and if could be difficult finding it when you are leaving.

It does not surprise me they removed your review. I had issues a Samsung refrigerator - 3 different refrigerators broke down with 24-78 hours of delivery to my home, I received them from Lowe's.

I wrote a detail review, honest and not in violation of their policy, and posted to both Samsung and Lowe's sites. I also diagnose the problem was related their monitoring App. The reviews were removed from both about a week later without explanation - it taught me never to believe the reviews on vendor or merchant sites. A Google search turned up numerous complaints on this model. Hindsight is 20/20.

Ten years ago, I was in a similar situation having worked 27 years under private ownership and then the family sold to a F500 company. The first six months, nothing changed with by salary or bonus package as they wanted to retain employees that grew the business. In year two, they aligned the bonus program to their corporate program (of course, it was not a good as everyone was treated the same regardless of performance - it was based on company performance). I was considered "highly compensated" and did not receive a raise and my bonus was 50% less than I previously received (as the old program was performance based - % revenue over plan and you earn % of your salary, maxing out at 50% of your salary). Year three, they offered Vo...

I was in the same position over eight years ago but I was 54. I loved my job and colleagues, but the new upper management team was destroying the business. I applied and was accepted for the voluntary severance package. I negotiated with them to finish the year out to maximize by severance, bonus and accrued vacation. I decide to retire but worked consulting about 4 days per month and after Covid stopped. It was the best decision in my life, both financially and mental health - wise.

I can tell there will be more layoffs and each subsequent package will be less as my former work colleagues have found out.

Apart from receiving the property title, are there any other important considerations or steps I should be aware of? If your property tax and insurance were part of your mortgage payment - you might want to make note of when the bills were paid and mark those dates on your calendar. You might also want to make note of the payment ammounts. You will be responsible for paying those bills once you no longer have a mortgage. if you cannot easily "cash flow" these bills you might want to figure out how much you should be "saving to spend" each month so that you can cover those bills when they arrive. If you keep track of the due dates (on your calendar) you'll have some warning to watch for the bills. +1 - This as you do not...

In my opinion, the companies with the largest datasets will prevail - GOOG=BIDU > APPL> AMZN=BABA > MSFT=META but there will also be industry specific players (like healthcare , possibly UNH or defense maybe PLTR, travel = BKNG, retail (specifically grocery) - any large chains with loyalty programs (they know a lot about you and your preference) or TSLA has more driving data, particularly for autonomous driving.

I would also not rule out Bloomberg as they have immense financial data and how companies interrelate. I suspect they are already using it and being private do not publicize it.

In NJ, I have had a in-ground pool for 16 years. I now use only test strips and check for Chlorine level and pH. When I first got the pool, I did liquid and strip testings every week; I also brought samples to my local pool place that installed the pool. Every time I went to the pool center, they wanted me to buy sometimes for pool and the whole first year was a battle (thought I made a big mistake). I finally stopped buying stuff and just maintain Chlorine and pH level - crystal clear pool no issues for the last 15 years. My best investment was my Dolphin robot. I throw it every Thursday night. I have never vacuumed the pool - the vacuum stuff is in its original boxes. After weekend of heavy usage, I shock the pool typically Monday night.

It may help take the sting of our high property tax and high car insurance a little less painful once you've reached 62.
Being close to the mountains, the shore (beach), several major cities and great healthcare and schools (currently #1 in the US) does have its advantages.
Retired early 8 1/2 years ago, living the good life. Seen too many friends move south only to regret it - FL - too hot, NC/SC - taxes low, but get hit in many other ways (surprised by car registration, water bills, road paving bills, etc) and travel back to NJ to see family.

Re: Mail Problems

Most of my bills are paid automatically except I have a few that have a "convenience fee" added that I refuse to pay; thus I mail checks.

With my mailed checks, I have had a problem when I just dropped them in a standard mailbox. My mail carrier told me they were very short-handed and could explain it. Now, I go directly to the post office and drop them inside and have not had an issue.

Re: Hummingbird feeder issues

I do not have earwigs, but I do have ants. I typically empty and clean my feeders once of week thorough with hot water. As I am cleaning, I spray insect repellant on the hook, then place the feeders back in place. This helps but does not stop it as rain and / or dew I believe are washing the repellant away. My biggest problem is that two of my older feeders broke this year and the hummingbird do not like my new feeders as much; thus, I have less traffic.

Re: HVAC Issue: Upstairs is significantly warmer. Will a 2-stage A/C make this worse?

Had similar problem in my 2300 sq. ft. front to back split level in NJ. Installed an attic fan to control temperature in attic, installed ceiling fan in bedrooms; then closed all but one of the downstairs vents in the summer as cold air settles in the downstair family area. Problem solved. Temperature set at 72'F.

In winter open the downstair vents.

PS: I have a 15 x25' bonus room that I added a Fijutsu Heat Pump that was never tied into main system. If you do change / upgrade your system remember to check with your local utility to see if they have any rebate deals particularly on energy efficient models.

Re: Landscapers on Saturday

I varies but I just call my guy and instructed them I would like the lawn done on Wednesday or Thursday as my family likes to use the pool and backyard on the weekend. It is not rocket science. I however cannot control my neighbors.
