I wear Air Optix multifocal soft lenses, and I think I even have an astigmatism correction. Hated them the first month or so, but once my eyes got used to them I like them better than any other brand I've used in the past. I wear them all day and usually don't need to refresh with contact solution.

Re: Do you watch commercials?

Netflix on the TV and ad block plus on the computer prevent me from seeing ads for 90% of my viewing experiences.

The other 10% = sports, mainly the NFL or NCAA. For sports I either mute/change the channel or have two TVs going at once so I can watch multiple games. Once my friends and I had 3 TVs set up for 3 different NFL games, and multiple times all 3 games were on commercial break at once...

Adjusted Gross Income / Solar Power Question

This is kind of a weird situation, but I'll do my best to explain it. I am thinking about getting solar panels because of the great tax credits that the feds and my state (NC) are offering. The feds will cover 30% of the cost and NC will cover 35%. However, I am a teacher, and my salary is about 40k per year, and my AGI is probably not high enough to enjoy the full credit in a given year. The credit can be carried over for 5 years if your liability is less than the credit in a given year, as it would be in my situation. For example: 2014 federal tax liability: $3,000 2014 state tax liability: $1,500/2 = $750 (can only claim half of this though according to NC law) Assuming I have similar tax liabilities over the next 4 years, I would multip...

I had a parent or two who fit that description. I recall the principal of the school basically being told, "we've paid enough money over the last few years for our son to graduate", which I hope was ignored. Most of the parents were fine though. Some parents were a little more hands off.

Re: Teacher Considering Career Change

Have you thought about teaching private school? I've taught in both private and public schools. There is comparable pay for both where I am, although public school has better benefits. On the flip side, I had the luxury of working 40 hour weeks at private school whereas I currently put in 60+ hours a week teaching public school. Also, I had practically no discipline problems teaching private school, whereas in public school it is nearly unavoidable. I'm sure you know the statistics, but most teachers quit in the first few years. If it were me, I'd give it another year and see if it gets any better (assuming you find a job - there are usually lots of last second hires as the school year approaches). Then again, for many, teaching is a callin...

Re: Masonite Siding

Thanks for the responses so far. It seems pretty evenly split between the "avoid at all costs" and "don't worry about it but keep it well maintained/factor it into the price" categories. I talked to my realtor and he agrees that the sellers will need to drop 10-15k off the price for us to go with the house. It's a great house and neighborhood but I'm trying to be as businesslike as possible with this transaction! Anyone have any idea what it would cost to strip down the masonite and replace it with hardie plank? The house is 2 stories, 1600 sq. ft., and it has a garage. I've asked around but had difficulty getting even an estimate. One acquaintance said his 2k+ sq. ft. house cost $18,000 to switch from masonite to hardie...

Masonite Siding

I am currently looking to buy a home. I've found one that I particularly like, but it has masonite siding. The house was built in 1986 - the masonite has been well maintained and a few parts of its exterior have been replaced with hardy plank siding. However, I've read lots of horror stories online about masonite siding, and I was curious as to what the Bogleheads think about it. Is replacing it just a major expense waiting to happen? I've heard with paint and caulking every 4-5 years you can extend its life for a long time, but that might get expensive (if hiring a contractor) or time consuming (if I do it myself, which I probably would). Eventually it will likely wear down and need to be replaced with hardy plank siding or vinyl. Anyone h...

Last Minute Denali Trip - Where to find lodging?!

So my friends and I were thinking about planning a summer trip to the Denali at the last minute. We were thinking of going from approximately July 14-20, but are having problems finding a cabin/hotel/any form of lodging. Anyone know of a comprehensive listing source for all Denali-related lodging? I have gone through some options one by one, but some of the availability calendars on these hotel website are primitive at best!

Late last year at age 25. I make less than 40k a year as a teacher. I used a 401k from age 16 and on. I also maxed out a Roth IRA from age 21 and on. I was lucky to have college taken care of by parents.

I expect I'll pass the 100k mark again in the future, whether it's due to a bear market or buying a house!

You're barking mad if you think you'll get sage advice here. Pick lines like "what's your asset allocation? Mine is 60/40" and "You're so hot. If your portfolio had any lower of an expense ratio, you'd start a fire in here" don't work very well at the Westchester dog show. Even the chocolate labs turn their noses at lines like that -- and they lick anything. Good luck. Those kind of lines don't work for you?! You must be using the wrong ones, try these: "If beauty were measured by expense ratio, you'd be a front end load fund" "You're no Bill Gross, but I bet you offer great Total Return" "Your body is more finely tuned than my extensive diversified investment portfolio" "Are you from ...

I still travel a few times per year, go out whenever I want, buy what I need, etc. If I ever felt like I was restricting myself by saving too much, I would cut back on the saving and ramp up the spending. For 5% gas rewards : Don't spend anymore than I normally would, kinda hard to fill up more than my gas tank can hold. Definitely doesn't cause me to drive more! For 6% grocery rewards : I'm pretty sure it has some kind of impact, although I eat everything I buy, so it could be worse For 5% rotating categories : Mostly I just try to time certain purchases (e.g. Christmas shopping at end of year with Discover's 5% online shopping bonus), but I don't think it impacts my spending much. Exception: The first year I had a card with 5% back on restaurants...I'm pretty sure I ended up eating out at fast food joints more...don't need to give me an extra excuse not to cook! Overall, I'm not much of a shopper so I guess CC impact is limited there. As ...

Sell before or after dividend?

In a taxable account, I'm planning on exchanging the proceeds from a Vanguard Target Retirement fund to Vanguard Total Stock Market (the goal being to own the underlying funds in more tax efficient locations). Would it be better to go ahead and sell it now? Or wait until after the distribution? Theoretically it should be the same either way since the NAV adjusts, right? Some other relevant facts: 1) I'm in the 15% bracket in 2013 (so 0% for long term gains/dividends, I believe!). 2) The TR fund has long term capital gains that I would prefer to realize in 2013 rather than in 2014. 3) The TR fund distribution occurs in late December, which might hinder point #2 being accomplished. 4) The total stock market fund will also distribute in Decemb...

Re: New to investing, Simple IRA rollover questions.

http://www.bogleheads.org/wiki/SIMPLE_IRA

I believe you have to wait 2 years before transferring out to a Traditional IRA. I suggest asking your employer if they would consider a 5304 SIMPLE, which allows you to choose a financial institution to use, as opposed to a 5305 SIMPLE, for which you must use Oppenheimer. The wiki says a switch must be done at the beginning of the calendar year, so get other employees to ask for the same thing ASAP! The only downside for the 5304 that I know of is more paperwork for whoever handles these transactions. At my previous job with a SIMPLE, this did mean quite a bit of start up work for the secretary, but became relatively easy once the process was started.

Re: Roth 401k vs Traditional 401k

I'll look into the pro rata rule and decide whether to convert a bit of my traditional rollover IRA in order to get NC's preferable treatment of Traditional IRAs. If the pro rate rule is too annoying in terms of tax liability, I'll probably just wait until a low income year and convert then.

I'm going to use the Roth 401k for the remainder of this year and try to do $5,500 in addition to the $12,000 I contributed to a SIMPLE IRA earlier in the year. Next year I'll reassess and likely do a combo of traditional and Roth 401k.

Thanks for the help everyone!

Don't confuse AGI and taxable income. The $10,000 combined personal exemption and standard deduction don't reduce AGI. Ahh oops! Thanks for the heads up. This means I am unlikely to qualify for the Earned Income Tax Credit then. The only way I can see you getting your AGI under $20,000 this year is to max your pre-tax 401k (as permitted in combination with the SIMPLE) and undo your Roth IRA contribution and make a TIRA contribution instead. I'm amazed at how much you're saving already, so maybe that's possible (especially considering you'll avoid the tax you're paying on the Roth IRA contribution). Roth 401k vs Traditional 401k

Trying to figure out whether to use Roth 401k or Traditional 401k for the remainder of 2013. I just got a new job that offers both. Here's my situation: 2013 income is ~40,000. I maxed out pre-tax SIMPLE IRA ($12,000) for 2013 at previous job. I also have already maxed out a Roth IRA for 2013. I will take the standard deduction/personal exemption @ 10,000 for 2013. My new job does include a pension (6% of salary automatically deducted toward fund). My math (hopefully correct) is below: 40,000 -12,000 (pre-tax SIMPLE IRA) -10,000 (standard deduction/personal exemption) -1,140 (pension contribution) = 16,860 This puts me firmly in the 15% tax bracket, which, in addition to having a pension, makes me lean toward choosing Roth 401k for the rest...

FYI I received a check from Discover for about half the laptop's initial value (~$170). This was the estimated cost of the piece that was at fault. However, the tech guys told me that even if this part is replaced, it may not be a cure all because other parts are likely messed up as well. I will be depositing the cash in my bank account rather than replacing the piece, as I have already replaced my Compaq/HP laptop with an ASUS laptop. I wish I could have been refunded the whole amount but I'll take what I can get. I guess the $200 that won't be recovered isn't too bad of a price to pay if I look at it as paying $200 to "rent" the laptop for 2.5 years before its premature death. Next step: Letter to Compaq/HP! Would Compaq/HP just use a generic manufacturer's warranty form and use it with lots of different types of laptops? Absolutely. Take a look at other electronics, like cameras or stereo equipment. Remember who is looking at the documentation. You have a valid warranty (the generic page) whose page title "Compaq/HP" matches the name of the laptop. The warranty describes a laptop computer. Done. Excellent. Many thanks! Now on to the itemized repair estimate...will have to make a few phone calls to local tech places in the next few days. I suspect the 7% state income tax at your income level is higher than in most states -- if you use the non-Roth investment and retire in a different state you would never be paying the high state income tax. Anything's possible, but I imagine I'll be here for the rest of my life. As (presumably) a state employee, would you also have access to a 457 plan at work? I do indeed. Doubt I'll ever be able to use it though. Maxing out 401k/IRA is a yearly goal - if I do that, I'm at a 60.5% savings rate (before taxes etc.). It doesn't seem to matter very much which part of the asset allocation goes in the workplace plan. My user guide is apparently ON the computer

Wonder if there's any other way I can get the manufacturer's warranty. I only have 6 more days to get all this stuff in before the extended warranty claim period closes!

Re: Laptop Dead After 2.5 years

So the credit card company wants the original manufacturer's warranty for my laptop...any ideas on where I could find that?! I'm pretty good about keeping paperwork, but can't find this for some reason... Any place to find it online? Get the exact model number of the laptop, and then email manufacturer for a warranty. Re: Laptop Dead After 2.5 years

UPDATE: Discover wants the following stuff to begin their review to determine if I'm eligible: -Claim Form. Signed by Cardmember. -Discover Card billing statement showing Cardmember name, account number and transaction charge -Itemized charge receipt from retailer/other showing purchase transaction billed to Discover Card. -Original manufacturer's warranty (complete warranty) -Original purchased warranty (complete warranty) -Itemized repair estimate from a service provider such as the manufacturer, retailer or repair shop Not asking for much, are they? The repair estimate is probably the only one that will be somewhat of a hassle. Luckily, I am within the time limit for Discover's extended warranty program, so barring anything unfor...
