Higher-degree polynomials are used in many engineering formulas to calculate the changes due to complex environmental phenomena over time. Higher-degree polynomials are involved in equations for steel corrosion, variable resistors and the depth of river flow.

I found this old post "Mel's Unloved Mid-Caps vs 3033 stocks"

Actually, that was a pretty interesting nine year stretch from 10/2001 to 10/2010: Extended Market, Mel's Unloved Mid Caps, Small Cap Value, and Small Cap Blend all highly correlated.

Re: how do you teach a kid who likes math
Perhaps a math competition game would keep a young mind interested. I have coached children that age in various sports and when I convert a repetition drill into a competition they really enjoy it and put more energy and effort into learning the skill. For example instead of lining up 10 kids to take turns making basketball free throws for 10 minutes. You put them in groups of 5 form 2 lines and they have 5 minutes to sink as many free throws as they can. Do this twice. Loosing team runs a lap.

Re: TIPS
In Canada we have access to a real return bond ETF that is similar to vg tips fund with one exception the average duration is about 16 years instead of 9 years. How would this affect your choice of percent of allocation? In other words, if you allocate 1/2 nominals Aggregate, 1/2 TIPS for bond portion then how would change the allocation? Would you decrease the Tips to 40 or 30% ?

Re: [Poll]Which is better: Lumpsum or DCA?
Over a 30 year period, Timid Tim and Brave Boris each have $1,000 per month available to invest. Timid Tim wants to timidly DCA into the market, so Timid Tim puts $1,000 per month into the market over 30 years. Brave Boris wants to bravely Lumpsum all $360,000 into the market, so Brave Boris stores $1,000 per month in a mattress until he has the $360,000 and then Lumpsums it into the market. Which is better? Or this scenario is more realistic. Over a 15 year period, Timid Tim and Brave Boris each have $2,000 per month available to invest. Timid Tim wants to timidly DCA into Vanguard index funds into the market, so Timid Tim puts $2,000 per month into the market over 15 years. Brave Boris has for the last 15 years day traded and position tr...

Re: Is VDC the best choice for a recession/depression?
dbr my original question began with VDC and then it migrated to bonds ... I guess if anyone has any opinions on portfolio composition to weather a recession I am all ears. How would a standard boglehead passive diversified portfolio stand up to a deep recession? Thanks for your input.

nisiprius : Great analysis and info!
dbr : I guess I am thinking people will still eat, drink and smoke during a deep recession.
I must admit I too can't predict anything ... but my gut tells me we are headed that way. I have not taken any steps in adjusting my portfolio I am simply thinking out loud and seeing what others have to say.
Thanks to all responders.
