The purpose of the 3 fund portfolio is to represent the total U.S stock market, the total U.S. Bond market, and the international market. Thus you get diversity, low cost, and minimize the risk of poorly performing sectors of the market. The key is not the number 3.

Never budgeted per se. Every paycheck I always did my giving first, my saving second, my expenses third, and then anything left over went into my savings. But I knew my knowable expenses and if I had to I could dip into my taxable accounts for my unknowable expenses. It worked.

I went through a similar situation and the good news is that S.S. will make a quick adjustment if your payments overlap and you double pay. I got a check in the mail for 2 months worth of prepaid medicare.

My wife was an executor and we did it without a lawyer. Easy to do in Ohio. We did not give ourself an executor fee since it involved wife and 2 sisters. But you can give lawyers their fee and your executor fee and then do the total distribution between those named in will.

There is no Right or Wrong answer. If you are one that is emotionally opposed to having a mortgage pay it off. I am retired and have a mortgage that is about 5% of my invested assets. I have no problem sleeping at night.

I tapped into my "taxable" portion of my portfolio when the kids went to college. I was able to self-fund their college through their contribution, my salary, and my taxable assets. Now that I am retired but not drawing S.S.(other than spousal through my wife) or doing RMD's, I use my taxable assets...

second the recommendation for Pine Club.

Not sure why one would need to know one's saving rate, but if one need's to know their savings rate it seems like it would be amount saved/amount earned. The only caveat I would add would be that if you have a company matching for your 401, I would include that in your saving rate.

It all boils down to expense ratio and the inability to predict the market. So if everyone has an equal ability to match market the only differentiation is expense ratio. Ergo index funds are the best way to go.

I have found that the negotiated prices with Delta Dental make it worth while to have. Of course, if you just have cleanings and annual X Ray then you are better off paying cash.

When FIL died we did not have to file personal income tax because all he had was SSA and a little interest. He was below income needed to file. We also did not have to file estate tax because dividends earned during execution of will was not over limit.

Since he has no income in Illinois he should file state income tax in California. If he has withholding in California he needs to get that reconciled. Even if he did a part-year residency he would put all his income in California so there is really no reason to file in Illinois.
