3 fund works for any stage. Other factors are whether assets are in taxable or tax deferred. At 70 you can use your rmd's for needed income or before then you can sell funds for income. I never saw the need for an income flow. I look at my portfolio to generate income based on growth.

Never budgeted directly.

When paid, I would first write a check for giving and then write checks or direct deposit for investment. The balance then would be used for expenses. That way I always hit my savings and giving goals.

For me the ownership structure of Vanguard means absolutely nothing. I am part owner of General Motors but I still make my vehicle purchase decisions based on quality,value, and service of the product. I do the same thing for my investment decision.

I am 66 and retired. I do not care about income. I look for total return. My rmd's, when combined with SSA and pension will exceed my expected expenses. In the meantime I just pull money from my taxable to cover gap between expenses and pension.

I would not feel comfortable having all of my assets in one location. I have it spread 60/40 between fidelity and vanguard. I believe vanguards ownership structure is more a marketing ploy and has zero impact on my financial strategy.

I think it is all about how much you value character and how much self respect you have. As a boss, if someone quits without at least 2 weeks notice, I lost all respect for them. You just never know when you may need something from your ex employer.

Never had a formal number but I knew from a napkin calculation that my expected income (ssa, pension) vs. Expected expenses was close enough I did not have to worry.
