Re: What the best value in anti-virus software

For Windows users, I always recommend the free Microsoft Security Essentials and make sure it is updated regularly. It does a very good job and is not a resource hog as some of the other paid Antiviruses. On top of that, you can also get the free version of MalwareBytes and run scans occasionally. T...

Re: HSBC lowers their rate again

They certainly drove me away after 5+ years of banking with them. I now use Ally.

Nice article on how indexes are created.

I was always intrigued by how the index funds tracked their markets. Now I know the different methods and their pros/cons. Since we all do index investing here at Bogleheads, I just wanted to share.

Re: Tempurpedic mattress--worth price? Finance it?

My wife and I bought a Tempurpedic mattress last year and it definitely helped my wife's back problem. I don't remember the model but it was around 2k for a special edition promotion they were running at that time. We got a 0% finance for 2 years. I'll give it 9/10 rating.

Re: Indoor TV Antennas?

I ditched comcast last month myself. I bought a Mohu Leaf Indoor Antenna from gomohu.com and it has been working great. They are selling it for $35.99 if you buy from their website. I did have to do some finetuning on where I got the best signal, but it was a lot better than the regular one I picked...

Re: Anti Virus Software

I used to use Microsoft Security Essentials before I switched to a Mac. I found it much better than other paid AVs and more importantly it is light on the system resources in comparison to others.

Re: Saving to pay cash for car

I guess I'll be different and say my new car fund is in a stable value fund in my 401k. I have 20-something thousand dollars in a tax-managed small cap fund in taxable. I'd like to say I'm adding to it monthly, and I would if I had the extra income. Maybe when the youngest is out of preschool for g...

Re: Starting 2 new Roth IRAs, the same fund?

i actually started 2 new Roth IRAs for my wife and myself last year and put 10k each (for 2010/11) all into TR 2045. We are age 32/31. TR 2045 has a 90/10 spread for stocks/bonds ratio. In the hindsight, I found myself not comfortable with the 90/10 ratio, so this year I am trying to make it either ...

Re: Laptop keeps shutting down for no reason

Run any hardware diagnostics that you may have received from the manufacturer first. Also try booting without battery with power connected.

Re: Anyone using MINT?

Once you link your credit card/bank accounts, it downloads all your transactions automatically. You don't need to manually enter it, although you can enter manually for things you do with cash. I have been using Mint since 2008 and I have liked it more than disliked it. The main problems I've had is...
