Re: Wisconsin - Madison Meetings - Master Thread

Greetings Fellow Madison Bogleheads! Join us Saturday, March 14, for our March meeting at Alicia Ashman public library, 733 N. High Point Rd. on the west side of Madison. We'll be meeting at a different time than usual due to library availability: that's 1-3 in the afternoon.

No topics are currently on the agenda. Speculation on the effects of the spread of COVID-19 on economies and the market are one obvious suggestion.

See you there!

Re: Wisconsin - Madison Meetings - Master Thread

Join the Madison Bogleheads for our next meeting on: Saturday, January 11 at the Middleton Library from 12:30 to 2:30 (note that this is later in the day than the hours when we usually meet) Discussion subjects (thanks to Larry): "In our first meeting of 2019, we each presented our portfolio performance of the previous year as well as some idea of our asset allocation and a general idea of how we handled our investments. Would this be a good annual discussion? (Yes it would! Let's do it.) If there is time I would like to get some feedback on the idea of how to invest “Once you have won the game” Bill Bernstein has approached this in an interview." Also note that for our Saturday, March 14 meeting we will be gathering at the Alicia...

Greetings Madison Bogleheads! Join us for our November meeting, this Saturday, Nov. 9, at 10 a.m. at the Middleton Public Library. Lower level, different meeting room than the last meet-up due to a book sale. No specific topic(s) of discussion have been set. As always meetings are free, bring your friends, join the Madison Bogleheads for freewheeling, wide-ranging discussions about index investing. See you there! Jay, great idea about having a tax planner or preparer address our group. We've discussed this possibility in the past but so far no accountant has been found. Do you have any suggestions? Re: Wisconsin - Madison Meetings - Master Thread

The Madison Bogleheads will be meeting this Saturday, Sept. 14, at 10 a.m. at Middleton Public Library, meeting room in the lower level.

We had a pretty lively group last time so this month's meeting will probably be even more informative since many are back from vacation. There is no set agenda but all are free to propose discussion topics.

As always our meetings are free to attend. Bring your friends and family.

Hey Madison Bogleheads it's time for our June meeting. Join us next Saturday, June 9, at Sai-Bai Thong Thai restaurant at 6802 Odana Road, on Madison's West side near West Towne Mall.

Usually our meetings start at noon, but this month Sai-Bai Thong has booked another party in our room at 1 p.m. So.... An arrival time of 11:30 a.m. will give us 1.5 hours to eat and chat. Does that sound sufficient?

If you're planning on attending please drop a note so others have an idea of how many will be attending.

Re: What have you baked recently?

Same here. I would have never believed how easy this was... I found comments saying that you can use the same recipe for different cooking techniques. The Mediterranean Olive bread was demonstrated using a clay pot. I'm using a Dutch oven and will follow the cooking instructions for that. Recipe books tend to make bread making more complicated than it needs to be. People have been baking bread for millenia, before there were precise measuring instruments, precise-temperature ovens, fancy baking devices, etc. ..... For those who haven't taken the plunge and would like to try baking their own bread, relax and give it a go. Words of wisdom fer sure. Recipe books do make bread-baking much harder than it should be. I learned to bake bread from ...

I had awful pizza dough for years using any recipe, to the point I had given up, but then recently this worked quite well:

24 hours rising in the refrigerator makes the handling, texture, and taste far superior to anything made the same day.
I don't have a stand mixer so I kneeded it by hand.
I use Roberta's Pizza Dough Recipe from the NY Times:

The 00 flour is the trick. I buy it from an Italian grocery store in town, although there are sellers of it on Amazon.

I also make it 24 hours in advance and put it in the frig.

Re: Factor in evaluating Physicians

I looked up my physicians in that database. One appears to have received thousands of dollars from a medical equipment maker. Clicking through for details I see that most of the money was dispersed in increments of $15-$30 for travel to classes, dozens of them, for learning how to use a robotic surgical device. Since he recently saved my life using that robotic surgical device I am really, really, really grateful to whoever paid his cab fare or whatever to the classes. I was however distressed by the reimbursements for his meals while attending those classes. One day he got only $3 worth of meal reimbursements. Another day only $7. There is one day where he appears to have eaten only $2 worth of food. Good heavens, he is a probably-still-gr...

Re: Is dry cleaning worth it?

When we moved into our house there were white pleated lined drapes hanging on several living room windows. I put one set through the washing machine. I took the larger set to a dry cleaner. The set I put through the washing machine came out white and beautiful. The set I took to the dry cleaner came back yellowed and so shrunken I had to take down the hem to get them to reach the floor. I avoid dry cleaners as much as possible. The only thing I take a cleaners these days are lined wool coats and blazers. Everything else goes in the washing machine. By the way in years past clothing makers supposedly got kickbacks from the dry-cleaning industry for including Dry Clean Only tags in garments. Read this in a consumer mag. I remember seeing Dry ...

I get books from a variety of places. Unfortunately the local public library branches are not bus-friendly from my house and I don't like driving. So I download new titles from the public library system when they have them available. Or I download books from Project Gutenberg. There are a lot of classics I have yet to read that I've been wanting to read. Occasionally I buy used books on ebay. Maybe once or twice a month. I think ebay sellers earn more than Amazon sellers. I also borrow paperbacks from the Little Free Library kiosks that have been springing up around our neighborhood. Usually Grisham novels and the like. Visiting several makes for a nice walk in the evening. Only once in a blue moon do I buy a new book off Amazon. If it's a ...

For my first canning attempt I cold-canned cucumber slices. It was a disaster. Ended up with 30-some jars of inedible green stuff. They sure looked pretty though and for a while I used them as decorations. :D In the end I decided to walk away. The jars went fast on the local FreeCycle. Other implements went to more ambitious friends and relatives. These days I do a lot of freezing. The chest freezer was one of the best things we ever bought. Regrets: Various canning tools and supplies We love canning and have two different sized pressure canners. What did you get that you regret? Any time we make stew, gumbo, or soup we make a much larger batch and then can 2 to 4 quarts of leftovers in the small pressure canner. Don Quixote. :D I enjoyed the Grossman translation, but I also enjoyed the older T.M. Cohen one which seemed to capture so well the breathless playfulness of Cervantes' storytelling--with all the long, winding sentences.

I've been intending to read the translation of the British satirist Tobias Smollett. A copy is waiting on my shelf. But like Fallible notes the book is best in small gulps.

Currently reading Thomas Mann's "Buddenbrooks."

Just finished the first in Elena Ferrante's Neopolitan series "My Brilliant Friend." Think I'm going to take a breather before reading the second.

If you are younger, you need documentation of how every penny got into Roth IRA. Some of that might be in those records. If you are over 59.5 and have had Roth IRA more than 5 years, that is no longer necessary. Are the tax returns enough to substantiate the non-taxable basis in a few old trad-IRAs or will we need the statements from the various mutual funds in which we invested? If you mean non-deductible contributions, all you need from the old returns is your last Form 8606. However, I tend to keep old returns anyway. We're a few years under age 59 so I guess I'll hold onto all the statements just in case. The last Form 8606 we filed was years ago. Along with our old tax returns I do keep a file folder with copies of the old Form 8606s ...

How long to keep old investing records

About 7-8 years ago we transferred all of our investments to Vanguard and Fidelity and consolidated everything into a 3-Fund portfolio for simplicity's sake. We sold off individual stocks and other mutual funds, closed brokerage accounts and cut ties with other mutual fund companies and a financial advisor. Tonight I was organizing some files and realized we have nearly an entire file cabinet jammed with old statements from brokerages and mutual fund companies from the years prior to the leap to the 3-Fund portfolio. The paper heap chronicles nearly 30 years of investing. Do we have to hold onto all this? Or can I shred it? I do have copies of all of our tax returns through the years, and plan to hold onto those. Say the ring is lost and you do not want a replacement due to Sentimental Reasons. Will the insurance company pay you the cash value of the insurance policy or just pay you the cost of replacing the same ring? Example: The ring is appraised at $20,000 and you insurance it for $20,000. It is lost and the insurance company can find the same diamond and setting for $15,000 (maybe in a different jewelry store in a different state). Thanks Paul I suspect so much depends upon the policy and the insurance company. When my parents' home was burgled their homeowner's insurance company had my mom sit down with a jeweler they contracted with and flip through jewelers' wholesale catalogs to pick out jewelry that was similar to what was stolen. When my husband gave me an engagement ring the thought of wearing an expensive piece of jewelry every day made me very nervous. I added a rider to my apartment insurance for the ring and that put me more at ease. It didn't cost much for that little peace of mind.

Check your CC statement at the end of the month. I once had a charge from a retailer that was absent when I checked my card online, but when I contacted the retailer they insisted the charge had gone through. The charge eventually appeared on the monthly statement, but never did show up online.

I second the advice that you probably should not go back to a national retail chain and report that you weren't properly charged for something.

A neighbor planted pines along the edge of a farmer's property to give himself a hunting stand for his cabin. He claimed he was unaware of the property lines. After the farmer died he sued the estate for adverse possession of the property with the pines. According to him he won.

Adverse possessions laws and rulings vary a lot by state. Adverse possession laws typically require that one occupy, use or fence off the property for 20-25 years but in response to pressure from various industries many states have been lowering the bar. Our state is considering going from a 20- to a 7-year use requirement.

Re: Liability with dogs, hypothetical

It's important to remember that with dogs, any kind of dog, you're always liable for any damages they are involved in causing, even if it's on your property and it's not the dog's fault. It's also important to remember that you will always be at the mercy of your insurance company, even if any damages are not the fault of you or your dog. A friend had a mixed-breed rescue, generally very well-mannered, calm, well-trained, looked like a collie-mix. Some neighborhood boy appeared at the door selling something. For whatever reason the dog (a female with a history of abuse) thought the boy was a threat to my friend after she answered the door and tried to send him on his way. The dog bit the boy on the ankle. Not a bad bite. The boy's parents t...

Re: Best Financial Advice from Dad (in honor of father's day)

Pay off the mortgage as soon as you can. But remember that life is short. Never hesitate to buy a new suit so that your family will be proud of you, take them out to dinner, or take them on a trip.

We stopped buying GE appliances for the same reasons.

We have a Kenmore dishwasher with a rack that started rusting on its tips within a year after we bought it. I think all the dishwasher makers must buy their racks from the same manufacturer(s).

Re: Watch Batteries

I am told that I can not put a battery in it that lasts longer than a year. My watch battery regularly lasts about five years so I don't understand this statement. I used to buy several watch batteries at a time but found that they gradually discharge by the time I need them so now I just buy one as needed from the local electronics shack for less than a buck and replace it myself. For years I used to get the batteries in my watches replaced at the local watch-and-clock repair shop. The batteries never ever EVER lasted longer than a year. Since the cost was $7.50 and that's about the price I paid for my watches :D I decided to start changing the batteries myself with batteries bought cheaply on Amazon. Guess what? The cheap Amazon batterie...

Re: Have you canceled cable?

We cut cable 16 years ago. Haven't missed it. At the time the rate had just risen to $72/month. That didn't include Internet or premium channels. So figure we've probably saved $20K over the years.

We used to borrow movie DVDs from the library but so often found them heavily scratched up and halfway through the movie we'd get a screen of confetti and that would be that.

Every so often we'll have a movie night and stream a movie from Amazon for a few bucks. We had Prime for a couple years but the movie selection has gotten slimmer in recent years and most of the movies available through Prime are ones we've seen.

Re: uva/uvb clothing

Consumer Reports tested UV-blocking clothing a few years back. They concluded that the Tropicware clothing from LL.Bean and the UV-blocking stuff from Land's End did the best job, and some of the pricey brands fell short. Some subsequent testing showed that certain clothing without advertised built-in UV-protection fared just as well. Like Hanes Beefy-T long-sleeved shirt. http://www.consumerreports.org/cro/maga ... /index.htm

You can probably read the full CS reports at your library.

Why not plant a flowering tree? If you want to be extravagant hire a nursery to plant a more mature tree than the ones at the garden center. Or maybe two or three. Congratulations on the new family member! :beer
