Fort Wayne here - count me in , maybe we should set up Zoom sessions rather than f2f meets given small number and wide spread of potential members.

401k Roll-over question
My current annual income (about 50 k) is probably and hopefully the lowest I will ever have, as I will finish my fellowship next year and become an attending. This makes me consider a roll-over of my 401K --actually 403b ..... (about 120k), pay tax hit now that tax bill probably will be the lowest it is ever going to be. I have a few questions and will be very grateful for answers. Thanks in advance 1- Will tax bill be based on my annual income (50k) or will it add the rolled over amount to my annual income (50 k plus 120k). In the second case , I may not got much benefit of being in lower tax bracket. 2- What would be the implications of converting to Roth 403 be with current custodian versus rolling over to a Roth IRA at Vanguard or a Rot...

Re: Roll Money into Roth IRA?
Sorry more of a question but relevant.
If current income is say 50,000 and you roll over a retirement account say 40,000 into Roth IRA, would the tax hit on this roll over be based on your annual income (50000) or now rolled over amount will count in your income ( ie you will get in tax bracket for 90000)

Re: Should I close this credit card with Annual fee
Thanks a lot everyone. I feel much more comfortable closing the card now if they do not change it to No Annual Fee card. To grabiner's point, yes, I do see another previously closed card still on my credit report, so I may not even lose the longevity benefit. Great, thanks, that was an excellent point.
Thanks again everyone for the replies, it was very helpful.

Should I close this credit card with Annual fee
Opinion and guidance is requested: I know the longevity of credit card accounts is a factor in FICO credit score. My Bank of America CC is the oldest one, I have had it since early 2009. I have a Macys store credit card from early 2010 (not sure if store cards count though) The other credit cards I did not get till mid-2012. ....... I wanted to keep BoA CC as it is the one with the longest history. But it has an annual fee of 29 dollar, and I have many other cards with better rewards and no annual fee. Customer service refused to graduate me to their newer, no fee credit card :( reward for loyalty I guess Should I keep paying 29 dollars per year just to keep "longevity factor" in my favor on FICO score? It really pains me to pay t...

Re: What Book Are You Currently Reading? Part V
I did not take mathematics in college but the subject fascinates me. Just finished reading " The Nothing That Is: A Natural History of Zero" by Robert Kaplan. All in all, a little bit disappointed as the the writing gets dry (for a math book of course) and argument seems to be forced in some places ( e.g. when trying to disprove India as birthplace of zero). Simon Singh's "Fermat's Enigma" was the best mathematics book I have read so far.

JPMorgan Chase loses $2 Billion
"JPMorgan Chase, the largest bank in the United States, said Thursday that it lost $2 billion in the past six weeks in a trading portfolio designed to hedge against risks the company takes with its own money."

Re: Newly minted physician..need advice
Just to report, called Vanguard and received fabulous customer service. Set up a Roth IRA as I still qualify to make contributions, without backdoor steps, this year, for the last time hopefully. If I understand correctly, deadline for 403b contribtion is Dec 31. With only a few more paychecks on the way, I cannot max out on 403b this year. However, April deadline for Roth IRA contribution means perhaps I should put any money I can spare till the end of this year into 403b. I then could fully fund 2011 IRA then by April 2012. In this situation, I believe, it may make sense to divert 403b distribution from previous 403b to current 403b. Please feel free to correct me if I am understanding it all wrong. Thanks Smackboy1 I am in process of cho...

Re: Newly minted physician..need advice
Thanks Relentless, Emergdoc, letsgoboby (let's go) and Stives. Lightheir too.
I have to say, Emergdoc, Sir, you are fabulous with the lists!
I totaled my previous car and had to get a new car on the fly. In hindsight perhaps bigger mistake was buying a brand new car. I will work on trying to get it refinanced/paid off.
I understand your sincere rage. And I appreciate it. Perhaps you could save a healthy dose of that for my bigger folly. For about two and a half years of my residency I contributed zilch to an employer plan that matched dollar to dollar on up to 5 % of salary!
You live and you learn.
Appreciate all the suggestions and look forward to sharing ecstacy and agony of it all going forward.

Newly minted physician..need advice
It is wonderful to finally finish training and start my first job. I have recently (just in time!) been frequently visiting the forum and have learnt a lot. I seek some advice from the wise: Emergency funds = 3-6 months of expenses Yes Debt: No school or credit card loan (I know, I am lucky in that) Car loan started around 12000 @ 5.01 % interest (over next 4 yrs) Tax Filing Status: Single Tax Rate: Federal ? 28 % bracket next year and onward. This yr my gross income jumped after getting first job around Oct, so not sure. State Texas (none) Age: 30 Desired Asset allocation: (70/30) Current Financial status: Basically starting at the beginning Previous employer 403b about $1500 total with New York Life. Likely will roll over to new employer ...
