guanonics wrote: Wed Jul 13, 2022 9:36 am Here's one way to look at it. Suppose it is actually 20 years ago (2002) and you asked the same question. The 10 largest US companies at that time were:
GE, Microsoft, Exxon, WalMart, Pfizer, Citigroup, J&J, AIG, IBM, Intel

You pick two of these and hold until today. Would you be happy? Neither Apple nor Amazon are on the list. There's one big winner (Microsoft), a couple big losers (GE, AIG), and a lot in the middle. AIG had a drawdown of over 99% around 2008 from approximately $1,200 to $7. Yikes! I'm sticking with the index.
Hello guanonics,

Thank you so much for the vote of confidence.

WOW, yes I am sticking to index funds ONLY for the rest of my life. Wow.

Re: Dollar Cost Average Investment Strategy - 2 Stocks - Review

Dollar cost avaerage may work and may not, Dollar cost averaging is not the issue. It works just fine. It is your choice of investments that people are concerned about. We don't know much about your portfolio, but it is generally not suggested that you put money in a taxable account instead of into your 401k. Continue to invest in the 401k - assuming you have some good choices there. And a Roth IRA. If you still have money to invest after filling both of those, that's the time to dabble with individual stocks, not before. If ever. Be satisfied knowing that your basic core fund (maybe a 500 index) already contains the stocks you are interested in. Good Morning retiredjg, Thank you so much for the brilliant post. Thank you . Re: Dollar Cost Average Investment Strategy - 2 Stocks - Review

I just compared back test of GE , Apple, and VTSAX the past 20 years at DCA of $300 a month. GE is still at $51,000 , Apple $6 million, and VTSAX at $278,956. $278,956 is not a million, but it is enough to sleep at night and not have regret at 62 years old. And can go buy retirement home in peace. I guess you are right, who knows what Apple and Amazon will do the next 20 years. And I am not sure I want to follow stock news and worrying about it over the next 20 years. Thank you, So, GE, as described above, shows how damaging individual stock risk can be. By investing $100 initially, and $300 per month for 20 years, that's $72,100 invested, which would now be worth $51k. Even a company like GE, that didn't go out of business can put you in ...

In my keep-it-simple mind, SP500 index is certainty for me and kept me sleeping the past 10 years I been DCA in it. I never worry. I just thought I add a bit of risk strategy in some stocks. Got caught up in youtubers I guess and the good price Apple and Amazon is selling at right now. I really appreciate the willingness you have to voice your ideas and accept input. There is an astounding depth of investing wisdom among the members of this forum - if you continue reading and discussing you will find yourself with a great investment plan after a reasonably short period of time. :D I'll add in a quick few thoughts about risk. The trouble with your premise is that you're seeking to go back in time. In 2000, Amazon and Apple were very different companies and their futures were far more uncertain than they are today. They each experienced huge growth spurts due to excellent products and popular innovations that added value for customers and shareholders. If you can somehow find a way to pick the next "Apple" or the next "Amazon" that will come along and add similar value, then you might have a chance at duplicating the feat. Unfortunately, past performance is not for sale. Regards, Thank you retired@50 for the response. I appreciate the response and details. 1. Do you think if I repeat the same investment strategy with $150 invested in Apple and $150 invested in Amazon monthly, I can obtain millions in 2042? Sure, why not? You know with absolute certainty that both Apple and Amazon will continue to zoom for 20 years or more. What could possibly go wrong? :confused 2. One thing that is puzzling me is in the early 2000s both stock was very cheap at about $X.XX per share, now the price is in the hundreds, so I will get less shares going forward and this could not lead to millions 20 years from now in this investment strategy. What are you thoughts please? Even with fewer shares than you could have purchased in the early 2000s, you could end up with millions - as long as the price of the shares in...

To take advantage of the market downturn, I’ve started buying about $400-500 (exact amount varies as it’s a percentage of my pay) of TQQQ every two weeks and plan to do so for the next 5 years (about $50k investment total). This is in a 401k account. No hedge right now, I figure that dollar cost averaging provides the hedge until the account gets bigger. Why TQQQ and not UPRO? I already have TMF/UPRO as part of a hedgefundie excellent adventure one time lump sum portfolio. I wanted to try something different rather than dollar cost average more UPRO. Why TQQQ with a bet on tech? Hasn’t tech already outperformed this decade and won’t we see revision to the mean? Aren’t high interest rates bad for tech stocks? I’ve been reading for years abo...

The risk of behavioral error on your part. Resolving to stay the course through a long, deep downturn, but not actually doing it when the time comes.
Hello nisiprius,

Thank you so much for the help on this. Really I appreciate it.

Yes, you are right about this. I can screw it up myself if I do not think stick the plan I have set for myself. You right.

Re: Dollar Cost Average in TQQQ Long Term - Questions

...I honestly want the low risk... I honestly think you're kidding yourself. QQQ itself is not "low risk" and TQQQ is definitely not low risk. Here is what Proshares says in their summary prospectus for TQQQ: "Principal Risks: You may lose the full value of your investment within a single day." https://imgur.com/Ws36peB.png There's been back-and-forth already in the thread about how likely that is, but why not believe Proshares? ... for big reward to obtain $500,000 or $1,000,000 in X to 20 years.... All the other risk, is just the risk, as long as I can redraw from my account in X to 20 years when my account is $500,000 or $1,000,000, is honestly all I care about.... Will TQQQ go up over the next X to 20 years? This is...

Re: Dollar Cost Average in TQQQ Long Term - Questions

I am investing in my 401K monthly as well for my retirement planning as well, so I am all good here. Are you maxing your 401k every each year? If not, I suggest you do that before investing (and/or speculating) in TQQQ in a taxable account. And I don't say that because I frown on buying TQQQ. I regularly purchase TQQQ and the S&P500 analog UPRO in a brokerage account. The bottom line, I think, is that people shouldn't be buying tripple-daily-leveraged ETF's unless their financial house is well-in-order. The return spread is simply too large to make this type of investment vehicle anything more than a lottery ticket. That is to say you very well may lose the majority of the money you dedicate to tripple-leveraged etfs. That is even to s...

Re: Dollar Cost Average in TQQQ Long Term - Questions

Before you do this, I think you should answer two questions, carefully, in your own words. Please avoid a circular ansswer ("I like QQQ because I like the stocks in QQQ.") 1) Exactly why do you think "Stocks that are not listed on the New York Stock Exchange" is a good criterion for identifying superior stocks? What is it about the exchange they are listed on that you care about? Why is this more relevant than more finance-related characteristics like market capitalization, price-to-book, dividend growth, sector exposure, etc? Why does QQQ make any particular sense at all? Why you care where a stock happens to be listed? 2) Why are you proposing a long-term buy-and-hold investment in an ETF when the provider says "...

Buying cheap and selling expensive is how you want to speculate.
Hello burritoLover,

Thank you so much for your input.

I agree with you fully and that is my bet or speculate. I can not afford Apple and Amazon, etc at the stock prices. TQQQ is cheap now and it is a diversified fund of technology stocks.

I a simply buying over time to sell at a expensive price in the near future. I choose TQQQ, well because I want to the reward then investing in QQQ.

I like your input.

Re: Dollar Cost Average in TQQQ Long Term - Questions

So what are the odds in the next 20 years of QQQ having a 33% or greater decline in a single day? By my math, such an event would wipe out TQQQ instantly. With a long enough timeframe, it will happen eventually. (The daytrader gets to avoid this risk because they get to pick how much they risk on a day-to-day basis.) Thank you VERY much wolf359, This is indeed a valid risk to think about it. Just to make sure I understand you better. For example, if my TQQQ investment account balance on 6/2/2037 is at $500,000, and on 6/3/2037 QQQ drops +33%, TQQQ will drop +99%, and my account balance will drop to about $5000, correct? Is your question or concern what is the odds of this happening? This is a valid concern or question. Has QQQ every droppe...

Is there any additional risk I am missing? Just need a second set of eyes.
The risk is: this strategy might underperform to another (more sensible) strategy, and you throwing in the towel at exactly the wrong time.
Hello ruud,

I appreciate your response. I agree with your comment 100%.

My strategy is to never throw in the towel over the next 20 years, just continue DCA every month.

Hello Everyone, Great to be here, love this site. I need a second set of eyes. I am about to dollar cost average over the next 20 years in TQQQ with $150 a month. I am 41 years old and I do not mind the additional risk (aggressive investing), I understand the 3 times leverage. I am investing in my 401K monthly as well for my retirement planning as well, so I am all good here. I have done some research on TQQQ and I have a few questions please as I have never invested in a ETF before and want to be sure I am not missing anything. 1. In 10-20 years will I have any issues with cashing out and taking the money/profits? 2. Is there any risk, I am missing with losing ALL my money except if TQQQ drops to $0.00? Hello burritoLover ,

Thanks for the feedback,

What do you mean by "consistently underpricing tech growth"?

I believe TQQQ is at a cheap price and TQQQ will go up over the next 10 to 20 years.

Re: Dollar Cost Average in TQQQ Long Term - Questions

I'm using TQQQ and other leveraged ETFs as "lottery tickets". I am retiring this year in a month at age 46. My withdrawal rate will start around 3% and will decline over time. I plan to toss extra cash into TQQQ during market declines like now. My goal is to add $10k to TQQQ every year that we get a bear market. During normal market times I don't plan to add anything to it. I don't see any reason why you would have trouble extracting your money besides taxes. I own it in my taxable account. Keep in mind that buying it in your 401k is probably worse than buying it in taxable. If you "win the lottery" on this your going to be paying the highest tax rate when you withdraw, whereas I will get long term capital gains rates. ...

I see it as a lottery ticket with better odds and it is enough fun to keep me interested.

Do you trust M1 Finance with your money? How is your money protected with M1 Finance. Just asking to understand the risk of M1 Finance broker. I never heard of that broker before.

Hello MotoTrojan,

Thank you for responding.

Do you mean you would just dump the whole $10K in XOM now and be done with it?

Thanks
Yes but DCA over 4 weeks is not bad either. Perhaps set a price threshold and if it crosses that before the 4 weeks is up then invest it all.
Hello MotoTrojan,

Thanks for the response and that is a good idea.

Thank you retired@50 for the response.

I have a question, what if XOM never gets to $30 or $25?
