Re: Pros and Cons of buying a franchise

I know nothing about franchising, but Firehouse vs Subway isn't even close. Firehouse subs use quality ingredients and actually taste good. Subway tastes processed, the only good thing is the slightly lower prices. In my city there is a Subway and Firehouse 3 buildings apart. The Firehouse is always packed during lunch hours. Subway? Not so much.

Re: Wife shattered her smartphone

I always use Apple products because of AppleCare and the backwards compatibility. AppleCare lasts for 2 years on the iPhone, and 3 years on a laptop (both about the shelf life with my usage and needs). Both problems I have had over the past 5 years (once with my phone, once with my Macbook) have been resolved simply by giving me a new product and just using my backup or iCloud to restore everything on the new device. Just my opinion though.

Ha ha, love the judgemenal vibe. I have been in the military either on active duty or the reserves for half of my life so far. I apologize if the sacrifices I have made as a combat officer lead you to consider me a mercenary. Apparently after multiple deployments and many dead friends I must simply be out for the money. Please pardon me for asking financial questions about my chosen route on a financial forum without first explaining why I wanted to be a physician in the first place. Do a little research on how being a military physician is actually the best way to earn the least amount of money as a doctor. Then go ahead and put your life in the line for, oh, at least a four year tour. After that I'll tell you you're wrong. Regardless, I ...

There are rumors that Apple is going to release a $299ish iPad2 8GB. I don't know how fast you were looking to buy (or your wife's need for spacious memory), but it is just another thing to consider. IMO, 8 gigs is probably too small for my needs but for web browsing and email it should be more than enough.

Scholarships will probably make the most money time investment wise-though it's risky as you may get none. Once you've written 3-5 essays about how you will save the world/represent a small ethnic group/was raised by a single mother/whatever your pitch is, it becomes much easier to apply for the next 3-5. Just copy & paste. If you get nothing, it'll help your writing skills and network with your profs who write your LoR. If you get a scholarship, you'll get money, build your resume, and they often give you a chance to network (pay for conference travel, poster sessions, etc.). There are a lot of scholarships for vet students. I'm sure there's lots for MD students. After searching through SDN and the internet for the last 3 or so years,...

I have no doubt that people feel this way. Unfortunately you sort of need to know when you will die in order to determine if you are working too hard or not enough. A certain amount of income is necessary in order to prevent other regrets. For some reason your post reminded me of this famous quote (and it also has to do with regrets). I am sure you have heard it but, the Dalai Lama was asked what surprised him the most and he replied: "Man, Because he sacrifices his health in order to make money. Then he sacrifices money to recuperate his health. And then he is so anxious about the future that he does not enjoy the present; the result being that he does not live in the present or the future; he lives as if he is never going to die, an...

The application for medical school (AMCAS) opens in like two weeks for students interested in starting in the Fall of 2013. Assuming that you haven't been studying for the MCAT, you probably won't be fully prepared for it until late June or July, and then won't get your scores back until a month later. This is already putting you behind the other applicants who turn in their completed application on the first possible day. I don't know how invested in this idea you are, but it takes a lot of time and energy to build an application and April 17th is already pretty late in the game. Not impossible, but just letting you know.

This is coming from a 22 year old on the "adult child" side, but my parents made it very clear that they would pay for my college tuition "for 4 and only 4 years." They also would only pay up to the total cost of attendance of my state school. Luckily I received a partial scholarship to an out of state university and so it was pretty much the same cost. I work part time to pay for food and fun and games but they cover tuition, fees, and housing. I graduate this May and will be starting medical school in August. At that point I will be paying (or rather using loan money) for all of my expenses except health insurance and cell-phone, as the 2-year contract isn't up yet. I thought that this was a great and fair arrangement....

Do yourself a favor and take out as little as possible for living expenses. Then, when you are in residency, continue to live like a graduate/medical student. Also check out EmergDoc's blog: http://whitecoatinvestor.com/ (once you are married, and you start earning income, she could contribute to a Roth without any earned income.) My fiancé will be starting a dual-degree program and getting a yearly stipend of $24,000. I have suggested to her that she should try and put away $2-3,000 a year away into a Roth IRA at Vanguard. We will clearly be under the income limit for at least the next 7 years and after that time we should have a nice little tax-free retirement nest-egg. I would start maxing out contributions to my own Roth, and paying off student debt starting in my residency. Good idea or other thoughts? Which Vanguard fund would you recommend? Best Credit Card for (International) Travel

Hey Everyone,

I have been reading this site for about a month now, and there is so much information to look through. First time poster, but I was hoping for some advice. My SO and I will be taking a Europe trip after college graduation (before starting dental and medical school respectively). What credit card would you suggest getting to purchase the plane tickets? We plan on doing quite a bit of traveling, so something that gives reward airline miles would be great. Do any of you have a preference?

Thank you!
