Re: Problem logging into Vanguard from abroad

After almost 10 years this post is still relevant. I just had the same problem in Lithuania. I was getting a generic error message that username/password were incorrect on login, even after attempts to reset my password. It occurred to me that it might be a regional restriction and a quick search brought up this post. When I called in to Vanguard I had the bad luck to get a clueless advisor who was not aware that Vanguard’s site blocks certain countries. She asked me my security questions but my account remained blocked. We wasted a lot of time troubleshooting. Finally she transferred me to the web technical support division, and they were able to fix the issue and allow me to log in. They told me just answering the security questions over ...

* I always click remember me
* It's always done this, regardless of forum upgrades. Done it for years.
* I never clear any browser history, or cookies, or anything like that
* I use LastPass, so it's not any effort (LP auto-fills for me). It's just odd that this is the ONLY forum that does it. It's also interesting how many others have this same issue. So there is something different about this forum.

Not the browser, as pennstater2005 mentions Chrome. I use FireFox.
I have had the exact same issue for at least a year - it loses my login after a few days. I use Chrome. This is the only forum where this happens for me.

Re: Tell Me I'm Stupid To Consider Quitting My Job and Movin

I'm 42 and plan to retire in one year after I've saved up a big cash buffer. I've been feeling uncertainty and trepidation about leaving my job and started seeing a life coach, which has been very helpful. You can easily find life coaches by searching on the Internet; most work remotely with their clients over Skype. I would pick a coach that offers a free initial session so you can see if their style works for you. It's not necessarily cheap but I consider it an investment and I have the disposable income now while I'm still working. In addition to meeting weekly with the coach, I've been doing a lot of reading, journaling, and soul-searching on my own to try to clarify my next steps. Some books I have found helpful by career coach Barbara...

That happens to me sometimes too. What you can do is tap at the top of the page to bring up the navigation bar and then tap the back button. It will take you back to the page you were on previously.

Not visiting Petra when I was in Jordan as a penny-pinching 22-year-old backpacker 20 years ago. I think the entrance fee was $50, which seemed like a fortune at the time.

Re: Poll: how much do you give to charity every year?

I definitely think I could give more. Right now I'm very focused on saving for FIRE.

One thing that makes me feel less guilty about this is that when I die all my assets will likely go to charity, since I don't have any kids. My family already has a charitable trust with Vanguard and I plan to contribute my assets to the trust on my death so the donations it generates will hopefully continue in perpetuity.

Re: My Early Retirement Thoughts and Calculations

Welcome! Great post. I think your plan looks pretty solid, but doesn't leave a lot of wiggle room.

How will you fill your time once retired? If you are interested in travel, taking classes, or taking up any expensive hobbies like photography it might be worth working a bit longer so you can still participate in those activities in the lean years.

I would also consider adding a little more buffer to your savings to account for lifestyle inflation. Twenty years ago no one had cell phones or Internet service. Now, few of us would want to live without them. In another twenty years, it'll be robot maids and hologram communications.

It's worked out for me. It certainly helps to have an aptitude[1] for the work, so you get done quickly and with good results.

1. This is not some sort of brag. I was pretty surprised when it turned out that way, but it did.

Brian
It's mostly worked out that way for me as well, although of course there are still stressful days. You have to find the right company - sometimes your first job isn't it. Also, being a female software engineer is a great position to be in because companies generally fall all over themselves trying to recruit and retain you.

Re: Potential new job advice

I agree with you that financially it is not clear whether it would be an advantageous move. I've been in a little bit of a similar position in that I've been approached by a Google headhunter several times in the past year, but have decided not to pursue the opportunity there. I'm well-compensated in my current position and will be able to retire in 3-4 years if I stick it out. I'm not passionate about the work I'm currently doing, and have wondered if working at Google would offer a more meaningful experience, but ultimately it's not worth the sacrifice and hassle of changing jobs at this point. If you are passionate about technology and working with the best and brightest, I would take it, since you are closer to the beginning of your car...

Re: What the forum is missing... [ability to upvote posts]

I have often wished for an upvote button to be able to silently show my appreciation for a particular post. There are so many amazing gems posted here; I wonder if the posters often have any idea how many people they are impacting with their words. A count of "thumbs up" votes would give them some inkling, at least, and allow readers a chance to express their appreciation and gratitude. Expressing in words speaks louder than clicking on a button. I can't believe this is an issue for people. If everyone replied with a +1 who liked a particular post, the discussions would become clogged with such posts. The upvote button is a nice unobtrusive way to achieve the same objective. Why else would so many major sites have implemented it?

Re: Post-Spending Regret

Enjoyed this article from Clark Howard, the famously thrifty consumer advisor, about how to handle differences in attitudes towards money in a relationship. http://www.clarkhoward.com/news/clark-howard/family-lifestyle/clarks-tips-handling-money-relationship/nMTqZ/ In the best tradition of marriage, we learned over time how to compromise. I am not as cheap as I was, and she has learned how to be more careful with money. In our case, our completely opposite instincts work beautifully together. My late dad used to get so frustrated with my cheap ways. He would say to me, "What, do you want to be the Pharaoh in Egypt buried with your treasure? Loosen up!" So I've learned to loosen up the pursestrings some. And Lane has learned to be ...

Re: Post-Spending Regret

i will take the other side of this and say that OP may not be the problem here. it sounds a lot like 'the chick/the lady' is pressuring him to spend money he doesn't want to spend. the spender/saver threads will be a golden lesson for the OP in the sense that he may be able to get out of a bad relationship before marriage and kids. i'm not saying that either OP or OP's GF are bad people or that they need therapy, but that they are not in agreement on money issues. people have goals, and if OP wants to save his fortune (for now, he says), that's fine and he should choose a partner accordingly.. or choose not to tie his finances to anyone at all. the headaches that will come with severe marital disagreement over money will far outweigh the h...

Check out https://ting.com for economical a la carte plans where you only pay for what you use. Their cheapest Android phone is the LG Optimus S for $190 (this includes the $35 activation fee). I have this phone and I like it - no slide-out keyboard though.

Jack Bogle is a role model of good will and good character.

Steve Jobs is a role model for ruthless pursuit of product excellence.

We need more role models like Jack Bogle.

What was the question again?
Completely agree. Just read the Jobs biography, which was fascinating, but I lost a lot of respect for him after reading how callous and cruel he was to the people in his life.

Kahlil Gibran's The Prophet

Kahlil Gibran's The Prophet has had a powerful impact on me. It's just a slim volume, but contains sage advice on almost every aspect of human existence. Reminds me of Ecclesiastes.
